*Updated as of 12/13/12 to reflect the Dempster signing and payments to the Dodgers.

Matt Schwartz released his arbitration salary estimates for the 2013 Red Sox today, so I added the figures to the figures we already knew, I added in an estimated $2 year/$25 million contract for David Ortiz and here are the salary figures I came to. I plan on updating this table as other players are signed, traded and/or released. The last column is the average annual value of each player's contract, which is the figure MLB uses to calculate team salaries for the purpose of the luxury tax. The luxury tax threshold in 2013 will remain at $178 million.

Cot's is great for a quick reference, but they don't use average annual values of contracts, which is how MLB calculates team salaries. I also thought it might be helpful to see what our salary would look like after signing Ortiz and our arbitration eligible players when fans play out their dream off-seasons in their heads.

Regarding Lackey, and I may be wrong (and pretty sure this has been discussed previously, and I forget exactly what the conclusion reached was, but I thought this was it), when he missed whatever amount of time it was this year, didn't that automatically trigger the 2015 at league minimum amount (that is, it's not so much an option where one or the other can accept or decline it, it's now officially happening), which I thought then spread the AAV out over 6 years (which, aside from getting an essentially free year of Lackey to make up for the one that he missed, I had thought was one of the other benefits of that clause).

But, again, I could be totally off-base.

It is my understanding that Lackey's option was a team option, which would not affect his AAV.

If they take the option and guarantee the season (they haven't yet and it is not clear that they actually can) it would reduce the AAV. Given the current state of the payroll and team, the Sox would probably actually rather have him count for the min in year 6 though. Or they may just want him gone at all cost.

I thought Bradford explained that this wasn't the case. There was something a while ago that explained how this contract worked, but my understanding was that even if they picked up the option now it wouldn't alter the AAV and only the option year would be at a reduced cost.
