Brandon Lyon to the Mets on a 1-year contract for a base between $750k and $900k per Rosenthal. Incentives could make his deal worth $2.4M.

Hey, that's former ALL-STAR Joe Saunders to you, buddy.
Actually, I was going to crap all over Saunders, but he's had a surprisingly successful career for a guy with pretty middling stuff. He should be an upgrade over Vargas, anyway. I could actually see him having some success in Safeco. Now if only the Mariners could sign a decent hitter...

Jason Giambi to the Indians on a minor league deal with an NRI.
Orioles avoid arb with RHRP Darren O'Day, signing him to a 2-yr/$5.8M deal plus a $4.25M club option for 2015.
In the wake of his broken non-throwing arm, the Pirates re-work their deal with LHSP Francisco Liriano. Rather than the original 2-yr/$12.75M offer, he'll get $1M for 1 year plus incentives. Pittsburgh outrights RHRP Vin Mazzaro to AAA, clearing a 40-man spot.
RHSP Jon Garland signs a minor league deal with the Mariners.
C Rod Barajas to the D-Backs on a minor league deal.
Orioles avoid arb with RHRP Jim Johnson on a 1-yr/$6.5M deal.
Orioles avoid arb with RHSP Jason Hammel on a 1-yr/$6.75M deal
Cardinals avoid arb with 3B David Freese on a 1-yr/$3.15M deal.

Yeah they are. If Masterson and Jimenez can take steps forward this season they could make some serious noise
Why not? they're giving up a pick for Swisher anyways...that team is looking pretty damn good now.

Well Bauer was injured last year so he should be better than he was in his last MLB stint. But yeah, Bauer is another key to their rotation.
Anyway, the Mets also made Bourn a 4 year offer according to Joel Sherman.
http://www.mlbtrader...r-to-bourn.html (Linked to MLBTR because it has a good sum up of the Mets/Bourn saga)
Anyway, I think the Cleveland deal is better for him because, and I never thought I'd say this, he has a better chance of winning there.
Posted 12 February 2013 - 01:33 AM
I don't know. Cleveland's rotation lacks a real front line guy. Unless Jimenez can recapture some of what he had in Colorado (that's a weird sentence fragment to type) they're really just hoping for someone young to take a big step forward. They could have a really nice team in two or three years, but I'm having a hard time seeing them as a contender for the AL Central crown right now. Don't get me wrong, they've gone from a joke to a competitive team in a hurry, but they have work to do before I'm going to expect much out of them.

Seattle DFAs Mike Carp. Seems like potentially useful 1B/LF depth, but I can't see how there's room on the roster.

Heartbreaking story about Mets catcher Landon Powell and the loss of his infant twin daughter to a rare disease this winter.
It's a tough read, but a well-written and necessary one that highlights the importance of organ and marrow donation.

I am so glad Crawford is someone else's problem now.
Posted 02 March 2013 - 01:49 AM
Carl Crawford has been shut down for a week due to nerve irritation in his elbow, according to the LA Times . Some speculation that he might not be ready by opening day.
He just cannot fucking catch a break to save his life. I feel about as bad for him as I do for anyone whose family won't have to work for the next four generations.

Interesting read: Washington Post article about how the Nationals are using vision training to improve performance. I remember hearing about Manny's exercises back when he was mashing for Boston and it was a big story when Brian Roberts got the tinted contacts and went on his tear, but otherwise I haven't read too much about this facet of the game.

With hard-throwing rookie Bruce Rondon already showing he can't handle the job, and with no other good options available in their own camp, the Tigers are already pushing hard to find a closer on the trade market, according to major-league sources.
Now, will they be able to find one?
The Nationals would seem to have an extra closer, after signing Rafael Soriano to add to a bullpen that already includes Drew Storen and Tyler Clippard. But the Nationals are telling teams that they have no interest in moving any of their late-inning relievers, because they want to be able to match up with the rival Braves at the end of games.
The Red Sox have an extra closer, after trading for Joel Hanrahan. But it's not clear how much the Tigers think of Andrew Bailey; as of Tuesday morning, the Tigers had yet to contact the Red Sox about him.

Interesting read: Washington Post article about how the Nationals are using vision training to improve performance....
I don't think that is uncommon. This is from Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal (about a year ago):
Most eye charts go to only 20-15 and stop there. The average
major-league baseball player, in the experience of Red Sox
ophthalmology consultant Daniel Laby, has vision that measures
around 20-12 or has been corrected to 20-12.
The limit of human vision is around 20-8 - meaning a person can
see from 20 feet what the average person can see from 8. Laby has
never seen anyone in his Massachusetts practice at 20-8, but he
sees a few baseball players in spring training who measure at
20-8.
"If you come in and you're 20-20 and you're playing major-league
baseball, we're not going to leave you there because that's not
going to be good enough," said Laby, who has worked with the Red
Sox since 2003 and has started work with the Chicago Cubs this
spring. "I'm going to get you to more of the normal vision."

Sale gets 35 for 3 from the ChiSox, plus 2 club options for 25 at the end. Seems a huge gamble to me, seeing that he isn't even arb-eligible yet.
EDIT: Now it looks like it's 32.5 for 5 plus the options, that's much more reasonable.

He's a risky guy to tie up long term but it looks like they got a discount because of it.

Gay player?

Ted Berg (USA Today) writers wonders if it a major trade involving a player(s) in the last year of a contract because if you trade before the season starts, the team still get draft pick compensation.
Or maybe Verlander got an extension?
Or both?
Posted 29 March 2013 - 11:37 AM
Paul Goldschmidt got an extension. Maybe that's what it is.
Posted 29 March 2013 - 11:39 AM
Yes. The 5 year extension that buys out a single year of Goldschimdt hitting free agency is the major story that Buster Olney is talking about as well as what has Justin Verlander so excited.

He has since tweeted that he doesn't know the players or even the teams involved. Yet, somehow, he knows that one is in the works.
Unless it doesn't happen, he says, in which case no one will ever know.
He could make the same prediction every day; bound to be right at some point
