So is Jose handed the keys at short or does Ben go get someone else?

Lind due $5M, then a $2M buyout or 3 $7M team options.

I don't particularly understand the excitement about getting it taken care of quickly. Sure, I'd prefer quick over long and drawn out like last year. But as far as relative importance, getting the right person is about 10000x more important than how quickly it happens. I suppose perhaps it shows the FO can be decisive if needed, but honestly, I just want them to get the right guy. I can't get excited for a procedural victory.

I'm skeptical of Farrell, but at the same time, now thats its done, of course I will be rooting for him and hope its the right choice. Definitely fine with Aviles as compensation. I have zero interest in watching him get more ABs for the Red Sox next season.

If it is Lind it will be interesting to see what affect that has on the negotiations with Ortiz. Is there anyone that wouldn't do Lind for Aviles regardless of Managerial implications?

But now I know how they felt, albeit with different kinds of concerns.

Damn, it's a good feeling getting the guy you want them to hire, but now it's time to add talent and get shit in order again.

Am I correct in thinking of Lind as the Frank Catalanotto of the recent Blue Jays editions? Hasn't he killed the Sox of late? I know he had a long down spell, but am I certifiable if I am a little excited about his upside? We have room to buy him out if need be, too, right? This would seem to mean adieu to Mr. Loney - unless they are going to have to duke it out in the spring.

Lind isn't a pure DH, though. He can play 1B. I mean, he's not Keith Hernandez with the glove out there, but he's passable. He wouldn't be taking Ortiz's spot.

That said, as Scuba pointed out, he's horrendous vs LHP, so they'd still need to find a RH'ed bat to fill out any 1B platoon.

#73 radsoxfan

WAR by season for Lind:

2006: 0.5
2007: 0.1
2008: 0.0
2009: 3.6
2010: -1.3
2011: -0.2
2012: 0.0

Looking quite a bit like 2009 was the extreme outlier and the guy is pretty much useless. I dont mind him coming back to Boston if it was a basically a salary dump as a way to keep the compensation low from the Red Sox ("sure, we'll take just Aviles....but you have to essentially pay us 7M")

I definitely don't want it to play any major role in the Ortiz negotiations, thats for sure.

Edit: I suppose hes not useless vs RHP, but he is still pretty uninspiring against them. If the Red Sox get Lind, its a net negative. No one is giving him that contract on the open market.

Well, I can think of a RHH 1B/3B/DH type who will probably be on the market soon. I wonder what Farrell's relationship with Youk (or Ortiz while we are at it) is like.

Lind is really redundant for Toronto with Edwin Encarnacion, Lawrie, and Bautista all better than him at the DH/Corner IF rotation.

He's not that good. But as the lefty half of a platoon, with Sands maybe, he could be useful.

ETA: His splits. Against LHP, career .607 OPS; vs. RHP, .836.

Why would Youkilis want to come back? Valentine's gone, but he'd still be returning to a media that trashed him up and down when he was traded, for a GM and ownership group who didn't stick up for him and sold him for pennies on the dollar.

Agreed. A Lind and Youkilis platoon would be pretty good. Plus, that frees Sands up for LF.

Edit: That said, Youkilis may not want to come back. And, if that is the case, then I'd be OK with a Lind/Sands platoon. Lots of options here.

Honestly Corsi, can't tell you why any of them are "The Guy". Farrell just doesn't impress in his two years "audition" with the Jays. He barely finished his team above the Red Sox and I'm supposed to be excited? Is this just a grasp by the FO to replicate the warm and fuzzy feelings?

Farrell can do anything. According to Boston. com, he previously served as the hitting coach for the Sox:

Farrell named Sox manager

Formerly the manager of the Blue Jays, a division rival, John Farrell will replace Bobby Valentine as the team's 46th manager. Farrell also served as the hitting coach for the Red Sox from 2007-10. (Globe)

Every man does have his price, but I have a hard time believing Youkilis would be keen on coming back to Boston after the mess that was 2012.

Plus, he'd be a part-time player in 2013. Part of the reason he was traded is because he was unhappy not being the starter. Why would he suddenly change his mind on that?

EDIT: Unless we get into, like, February and no one's made him an offer. But how likely is that?

The Jays were destroyed by injuries this year. I think Farrell certainly has question marks surrounding his handling of the Escobar situation, but it would be hard to evaluate his performance this year due to the injuries.

I have the same feeling. I'm thinking they must know what they are doing, like I did when I came to the acceptance stage with the Bobby V hire.

It's a small sample size I know, but watching that Toronto shit show the last couple of years, with bad fundamentals and goofy players...I'm not excited.

Because if the MFY's cant deal ARod he gets the most money in Boston and seems to still have a soft spot for the spotlight in Boston:

"There were little (things) here and there that are way different than Boston," he said. "Boston, you are use to sold-out crowds every night. It was very surprising that when we were winning, we were still second fiddle to the Cubs. I thought we brought a lot of enjoyment to the fans. There is a great fan base that was there.

You're probably right, that is Jerry Sands job, and Youk is probably wearing green & gold next year. But for the right amount, Youk fills the role better short term, probably sells some tickets and makes Pedey happy. Oh yeah, and it probably makes his wife happy.

As to the thread topic, I imagine the four year deal is an indicator that 13 is truly a rebuilding year and there will be no Hamilton signing / Lee deal and Ellsbury is more likely to get flipped for younger, cost controlled talent that will peak in the 14 / 15 / 16 timeframe. Cherington's job has to be tied to Farrell's success in year 3 &4 doesn't it?

But who led the world in injuries and that manager is gone? The MFY's had their share of injuries too and they won the AL East. So hard to accept that as an excuse.
