I don't get the fascination with Texas A&M. Yeah, losing by 3 to Florida was a nice badge of courage, but having to claw back from a 2-TD deficit to eek out a win against Ole Miss doesn't scream "Top 10" in my book. I haven't seen anything to suggest the Aggies are better than Mississippi State or their ex-Big 12 brethren Texas, Oklahoma and Iowa State.

I don't get the fascination with Miss St. Their opponents are the 8-19 crap squad of Jackson St (2-4), South Alabama (1-4), Kentucky (1-5), Auburn (1-4) and Troy (3-2, with a win over South Alabama). TAMU Losing to Florida by 3 is MUCH more impressive than Miss St beating Troy by 6. And Ole Miss is lightyears better than anyone on Miss. St schedule so far.

I don't even have them in my top 25. If they beat Tennessee they are in, but I think Tennessee kills them.

Who is fascinated with Mississippi State? It seems the consensus is they're a top-25 team, but not a top-10 team.

Auburn played LSU and Clemson close, which is more than you can say for anyone that Louisville has beaten. MSU's going to get exposed at some point by someone -- perhaps as soon as this weekend when they play Tennessee -- but for now they're ranked right about where they should be, imo.

Who is fascinated by Miss St? Everyone who has them in the top 25 over a team like TAMU, Iowa St, and Cinci, three teams that have gone on the road and beaten decent or better teams (Ole Miss, TCU, and VT, respectively)

My post was in response to browndog thinking TAMU hasn't done anything to suggest they are better than MSU. I think they are far more worthy of a top-25 spot.

For me, after 6 weeks, to be a top 25 team at this stage you either need to have a win against a decent BCS-level team, a close loss to a top 10-15 team or blow out all your crappy opponents. MSU has done none of those things. A 13 point win over Kentucky and a 6 point win over Troy doesn't cut it.

Louisville beat Kentucky by a similar score as MSU, but also has a win over UNC, which at 4-2 and a win over VT is a reasonably above avg team. Auburn just got killed by that Arkansas train wreck and has one win, against ULM in OT. And LSU plays every team close because they can't score against a decent D. Auburn's D is good but their offense is very very bad, they are 119th in scoring.

There is indeed food for thought for my TAMU vs Miss St comparison, so thanks for that. Perhaps I do have the Bulldogs ranked a little too high despite their unblemished record. But I'm far more puzzled at how anyone could view A&M as a top ten team right now, which is where this thread's first two posters have them.

Lots of agreement here. The top 7 teams appeared in everyone's top 10, tOSU was left off two, and LSU was left off three. USC appeared on 5 of 12 ballots. None of the teams that missed the cut made more than 3.

No one has a tougher schedule to date than Washington -- they played @Oregon, @LSU, and hosted Stanford. I guess the cupcake game against Portland State skews the statistical measures.

I downgraded WVU a bit because my impression is that one-dimensional teams with great offense don't fare as well as one-dimensional teams with great defense. I don't know if the facts bear out my impression, though.

Not too early to start thinking about what happens if they go undefeated. Yesterday's lackluster performance at Indiana notwithstanding, the Buckeyes are likely to be 10-0 going into their last two games (@Wisconsin, vs. Michigan).

The only "plus" on their resume, and the only reason I even have them ranked at all, is a 3-point home loss to Florida.

I suspect I'll hear some cat calls over where I've got Stanford and Iowa State ranked as 2-loss teams. Bring 'em on. The Cardinal got royally fucked out of a chance to win yesterday in South Bend. There isn't a team ranked I've ranked below these two schools that has been more impressive given their relative strengths of schedule.

By the way, if you want a good laugh, check out the latest Sagarin ratings. According to his fuzzy math, Arizona State is the 11th (!!!) best team in the nation. Seriously. Here's ASU's schedule to date, with Sagarin's current ranking for each in parentheses:


08/30 vs Northern Arizona W 63-6 (#114)
09/08 vs Illinois W 45-14 (#95)
09/15 at Missouri L 20-24 (#44)
09/22 vs Utah W 37-7 (#55)
09/29 at California W 27-17 (#41)
10/11 at Colorado W 51-17 (#144)

By Sagarin's own math, the average ranking of ASU's opponents is 82, with none in the top 40. I can't even fathom ranking an unbeaten team so high with a schedule that weak. Not sure where else to go with with this, so I'll just break down each of those teams and what they've done to see if I missed anything:

* N. AZ is a 5-1 FCS school.
* Illinois is 2-5 with its lone wins over Western Michigan & FCS Charleston Southern. The only team the Illini have played that's currently in the Top 25 in either poll is Michigan (#25 USA Today), which predictably creamed them yesterday 45-0.
* Missouri is 3-4 with its other 2 wins vs SE LA and UCF. Apparently the feather in their cap is that they've played Alabama, Georgia & S. Carolina, but the Tigers were outscored 114-40 in those games. They've also lost to Vandy. Cal, Utah & Colorado are 3-4, 2-4 and 1-5 respectively.
* Cal's talking points are road losses at Ohio St (35-28) and USC (27-9) and a win over then-#25 UCLA (43-17), but one of the Bears' wins came against FCS Southern Utah, and they also lost at home to Nevada.
* Utah beat then-#25 BYU and FCS Northern Colorado. The Utes lost by 10 to USC, by 7 at UCLA, and by 7 in OT to Utah St.
* The Buffs' only win was by 1 point at WASU, with close losses to Colo St & FCS Sacramento St and drubbings at the hands of Fresno St and UCLA.

So by virtue of Missouri, Cal & Utah each having played 2 or 3 ranked teams while losing most of those games, ASU is anointed the #11 team in the land by the most fucked up application of the transitive property of equality in the history of mathematical manipulation. Sagarin's mantra seems to be that as long as you've played and beaten some shitty teams, half of whom have played 2 or 3 ranked teams, regardless of how those shitty teams have performed in other games, it's good enough for you to be ranked ahead of all but 10 of the 247 FBS and FCS teams.

Nothing personal against Hambone and his Sun Devils, but it's completely ridiculous.

Just shows how dumb they were to not self-apply the bowl ban last year. They were 6-6 and got a Gator Bowl birth, bfd; this year they will likely lose out on a BCS bowl.

Dog, it was very charitable of you to put Texas in your top 25, and I appreciate the sentiment. Despite the upcoming win against Kansas on Saturday, you should probably reassess that ranking in light of the following FBS rankings and actual numbers for the Texas D:

- Scoring Defense: 105th, 35 ppg
- Rushing Defense: 109th, 216 ypg
- Passing Defense: 94th, 256 ypg
- Total Defense: 110th, 472 ypg

And these numbers include the shutout against New Mexico. So other than New Mexico, Texas hasn't stopped anyone this year and there is no reason to suspect that they will do so over the next five games. Expect Texas to lose at least three of those because we are not going to outscore Tech or KState, and I'd give 50/50 odds on one or both of TCU and ISU outscoring us. Kansas is the only team we have a better than 50% chance of beating. At his press conference after the Baylor win, Mack set a new goal for the season: become bowl-eligible. So now that Mack has bailed on the rest of the season beyond Kansas, I'd be taking the over in every Texas game if I was a betting man.

At least the Sox finally seem headed in the right direction.

Who has Oklahoma really beat though? They look pretty good against non top 25 teams, but they don't even show up against top 10 ones. Though I guess you're saying there's a huge gap in there after either LSU or Clemson.
Edit: I guess there's Texas Tech,but I still can't decide how good they are either.

so Oregon needs a ton of help to get the BCS ttile game. ND and KState will both have to lose and they have to hope that AL doesn't lose. Oregon's schedule got downgraded materially esterday after USC and ORSt both lost. instead they get to play in the rose bowl versus some awful big 10 team.
