SIC ordered the STATS today, I'll get NendaSoksi on here to give some details, but it's a rivetting story of tarrif exemptions and right hand drive.

With that underway, the vast majority of the $45K, and me back in the US and working on getting items out to the people I owe, I want to move on to choosing images. Based on the discussion in the previous thread, it looks like SoxVindaloo and johnmd have chose A) Tek and Foulke after 2004 for one side and a Pedro image TBD on the other.

With this in mind, early next weekish, I'm going to start up a bracket tournament to pick the third image from those nominated. I will exclude Pedro pictures, since one of them will be on one side. The ballotting will take place in P&G so as not to clutter the main board, but I'll post updates here to keep people in the loop.

If you want to nominate another picture for the tournament, this is the place to do it.

A picture of the 3 starters walking out to the bullpen in game 5 or the '04 ALCS would be pretty cool, though I've never seen a really good one anywhere.

Hi all, it's true, the shiny new truck is on its way! We sourced quotes from 6 vendors and to get the Tanzanian tax exemption we are entitled to took 9 visits to the Arusha District Commissioner, and another week of visits to the Tanzania Revenue Authority for an official stamp for that letter. But we got it, we put our order in (just in time--they told us they only had two left in stock) and now we're just waiting to hear the expected arrival date. The truck will be shipped from the Toyota warehouse on Gibraltar, to the congested port in Dar es Salaam, where we'll have a local agent get it through customs, pick it up and drive it to Arusha, about 12 hours. In the meantime we'll be looking for a local buyer for our beat up old truck that's on the brink of needing another major repair. Since the largest bill in Tanzania is only worth $7 and people prefer to transact in cash, this will probably involve huge wads of cash changing hands. Just how things get done in Tanzania.

This truck is a gleaming white canvas, so we're looking forward to painting it up. And then of course to taking it to some of the villages most in need, spreading key messages about HIV and about great moments in Red Sox history.

Would love to see one of those---was in the bleachers at the time and everyone went absolutely nuts. Anyone seen a picture of that from anywhere?

If you want to follow the ship with our truck on it, go here. It's not like following Dice-K or Doug Mirabelli, you know, in the sense that the truck doesn't kind of suck.

Well, it does say this:

DeadWeight: 45200 t

Which suggests it does have something in common with Dice K and Mirabelli

But it is a pretty Red color, which is appropriate.

Finally left Genoa yesterday afternoon and made an overnight pit stop in Naples. Departed there 6 hours ago and is cruising SE 75 miles north of the toe of Italy. She'll pass through the Straits of Messina in a few hours with Sicily to her starboard.

Next stop: Port Said at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal in Egypt.

The ship's last position at 6:30 AM EDT was 10 miles north of Port Said, She's set to berth in about 15 minutes.

Not sure what other ports she'll be hitting from here, or what route she'll be taking around the Somalia coast (friggin' pirates...), but it's about 4,000 miles from Port Said to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Anyway, the AIDS truck is now in Africa.

At last report an hour ago, Jolly Perla had traveled halfway through the 120-mile Suez Canal. Much of the canal is designed to handle single-vessel widths, so traffic is managed by convoy with groups of ships traveling in one direction at a time. Hence she's been anchored in Great Bitter Lake just south of Ismalia waiting her turn to continue south to Suez. It's also a slow trip, with vessels kept to 8 knots or so to minimize wakes and bank erosion.

Once through the canal, it's about 200 miles through the Gulf of Suez, 1200 miles through the Red Sea, and 500 miles through the Gulf of Aden to the Arabian Sea.

The ship is now in the Red Sea, east of Elba National Park, traveling due southeast at 17 knots. She has about 50 miles left in Egyptian waters before entering those between Sudan and Saudi Arabia, and 780 miles to the Straits of Bab-el-Mandeb and the Gulf of Tadjoura where she'll take a hard turn to port into the Gulf of Aden.

Translated from Arabic, Bab-el-Mandeb means "Gate of Grief". Not sure why they didn't just call it Lackey's Passage.

There's something wrong with the page, as it's showing her coordinates from more than 2 days ago as her "last reported position".

Yesterday at 6 pm EST her location was 22o37'N 37o46'E, about 570 miles to the SE, which is to be expected at a speed of 18 knots or so.

The site is somewhat unreliable at times. I use the site every day at my job and sometimes reports appear and then go missing, don't appear until some time later, etc...

It's better than nothing, but there are 'for fee" services that allow for more accurate tracking.

The tracking page is still messed up, but shortly after my previous update the ship pulled into port at Jeddah, gateway to Mecca, in western Saudi Arabia. It's the largest port on the Red Sea, and she was still berthed there as of 5:39 AM EDT yesterday (11:39 AM local time).

In the Indian Ocean, heading southwest off the Somali coast. Barring any pirate attacks, she'll port tomorrow morning at Mombasa, Kenya. From there, it's about 215 miles to Dar es Salaam.
