Despite last nights loss, BP continues to insist the Sox have a .1% chance of making the playoffs. Although the results were mixed, I believe the early returns on the Punto trade were encouraging, as Webster struck out 7 in 4 innings in his Sox debut for Portland, and reportedly hit 96 on the gun. Also in that game, first baseman Travis Shaw hit a 3 run homer in the 12th. It was his 65th extra base hit of the year and he also has a .400 obp.

The GCL Sox season just ended with a 5-2 loss in game 2 of the best of 3 championship series. Callahan pitched 2 scoreless but Montas gave up a 3 run homer. The team got to the finals mostly with their pitching, which included 5 men who threw at least 10 innings with an era below 2. Along with some very strong performances at Lowell this year, pitching should be a strength throughout the system next year.

Watching the MLB network today, one announcer said the recent Angels-Sox game that went extra's at Fenway was a candidate for game of the year. They also compiled one of their list shows giving their choices for the top 25 overlooked plays. Carbo's homer preceding Fisk's was #4 while the wild pitch/passed ball preceding the Buckner error was #1.

Yeah, I heard that too. Still think it's idiotic. That was a terrible, terrible game on the Sox's part and I don't understand how anyone could see it as anything else

One part of the Punto trade that may go overlooked is the addition of DeJesus to the Paw Sox playoff run. Today he went 4 for 6 which included a leadoff 9th inning single in a tie game in what would became a 9-4 blowout win. In 3 games with Pawtucket, he is 7 for 12 and the Paw Sox have won all 3, now leading Lehigh Valley by 2 games for the final playoff spot. Fields, Hill, and Wilson threw 4 scoreless in relief of knuckleballer Wright. All 3 may join (or rejoin) the bullpen in Sept.

Seems simple. They need a starter tonight; Whatshisname starts and gets optioned tomorrow with bard activated.

That Bard has joined the team in Anaheim doesn't mean they've activated him

So, Daniel Bard won't be activated tonight. Probably takes Zach Stewart's spot after tonight start. Stewart could go back on roster in Sept.

Edit: or what E5 said for free.

Maybe a dumb question but can 25 man rosters be altered during a game?  For instance...could Stewart come out after his night is done, het optioned to aaa and bard activated and thus available out of the pen all during the game? Not suggesting they do this. Just curious

The roster for a game is the roster for a game, no in-game changes.

If this were a day-night doubleheader, Stewart could start Game 1 and be optioned between games, with Bard taking the roster spot

Looking back, Bard says he failed as a starter b/c he got away from fastball-slider combo and "hit it if you can" mentality #RedSox

Bard has been relatively better the last 4 outings, with just 1 ER in 4 IP. This is compared to his overall 7.03 ERA in 32 IP. Drilling down, he still had 2 BB and just 2 K in those 4 IP.

You need it explained to you again?

Stewart starts tonight, so he'll be useless through the end of the month
Bard activated tomorrow, Stewart optioned

You get a fresh arm for three days

dont know...

But in other news, is Ace going to be in the rotation next year/down the stretch this year?

Brian MacPherson ‏@brianmacp
Valentine was asked if he thinks Aceves is wearing down. He shook his head. "There's some thought about stretching him out."

Brian MacPherson ‏@brianmacp
@bosdcla14 "Stretch him out" usually means "turn him back into a starter."

While this isn't a common practice - it is perfectly legal. Another strategy which the Red Sox should have used is the "do-over." Last night when Kalish grounded into the double play - if he stopped running, threw up his hands and yelled "do over" - the outs wouldn't have counted and he would have got another chance to hit.

I would have thought that a baseball savant like the fifth would have had the team trained for plays like that.

Seriously, the funniest part of that post was that he thought that maybe it was a dumb question...
