He has an insane 114 Ks in 70 IP (29 BBs) so far as a pro, no HRs allowed as of yet. RAB has him as NY's #16 prospect currently, between Betances and DJ Mitchell.

Josh Norris
Tony Franklin on Mark Montgomery: "Wow. Yeah, wow."
On whether Montgomery's slider is the same as the one Joba Chamberlain used in 2007, Franklin said ...
"It is. It is, in '07 when Joba was here. No question about it. I try to skirt a lot of issues with you, but yeah, it's every bit as good."

"I don’t know when Montgomery will make his Major League debut, however, if I were Brian Cashman I would have to think long and hard about giving Montgomery a taste of the majors to see if he could be an asset on the postseason roster."

4 more Ks in 2 innings, though, that's 17 in 10 IP in AA now.

Tom Kahnle is another guy that's moving slow as mollases even though he's missing a ton of bats.

Couldn't they release Freddy right now to make room for someone who might help them? No, I think it's that they don't want to put him on the 40 man roster yet and lose the spot over the winter.

Okay. See your point about not having to put Monty on the 40-man yet and saving that space for someone else. It's not the spot now that's the problem, it's that if they add him now, they have to keep him there this winter or expose him to other teams, whereas if they don't add him, they can keep someone additional who they'd lose otherwise. Once the season starts, guys can always be stashed on the 60 day DL and it's less of an issue. I am not a fan of this rationale in this case, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

And for the hell of it, here is his combined line across all leagues this year (A, AA, AFL):
72.2 37 12 12 26 114, 1.48 ERA, .867 WHIP, and a ridiculous 14.1K/9.

Scoops Bolling in the general prospect thread updating the numbers for us:
========================================
Mark Montgomery so far in 2013:
7 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 0 BBs, 12 Ks.
Minor league career to date:
99.2 IP, 60 hits, 19 ER, 38 BBs, 162 Ks (401 total batters faced).
Craig Kimbrel career minor league numbers:
151 IP, 74 hits, 31 ER, 95 BBs, 242 Ks.
It is simply unfair that the Yankees will have this kid replacing Rivera.

My man Montgomery finally got hit today, giving up as many ER (3) as he had previously all year.

Is that because they have suddenly apparently decided to make him a long man, and have used him for absurd pitch counts his last few times out.

Sorry if the answer to this is obvious, but where are you getting minor league pitch count numbers from? I don't see them at either milb.com or minorleaguecentral.com, thanks.

I scan the minors thread on nyyfans once a week or so to stay up on what they have, and they are bellyaching on nyyfans about it. He threw 50 on May 12, and then 39 on May 19, he didn't throw in the week in between.
His numbers are outstanding. His usage seems a bit odd, when you look at it. A kid with numbers like that you expect would be throwing near the end of the game. yet his last 3 times he has been used it has been 5th inning, 3rd inning, 5th inning, and that seems the norm that he is generally the first man out of the pen when he pitches, and generally middle relievers in the minors aren't prospects. Maybe it is intentional. Maybe they have a plan and basically use him more like a starter, and tell him when he will pitch, and make the conscious decision to tell him a day ahead of time you will be first man out of the pen tomorrow, and that happens whether it is 3rd inning or 7th

Oh, OK. I used to do that too (nyyfans minors thread) but haven't done it for a while, thanks.
My guess is that they are trying to make him a multi-inning guy if possible, and the extended pitch count the last time was just because he couldn't get out of the inning. I'm just guessing, though. I didn't expect Claiborne to come up before him, but he's been great so far, so clearly I was wrong on that one.
