Every year, right about the middle/end of August, season ticket holders (and 10 and 20 game plan holders) are used to getting an envelope from the Red Sox with a bill for their postseason tickets.

Even in years when it's unlikely they will qualify, the bills still go out "just in case".

If the team doesn't make the playoffs, the money is assigned towards your season ticket bill for the next season.

Based on the season to date, and with the team "only" 6.5 games out of the Wild Card, would you pay the $$ to ensure attendence at any home postseason games? For holders of regular (not 10 or 20 game plans) they make you buy the full string -- 1 WC game, 4 ALDS games, 4 ALCS games and 3 (this year) WS games, so it's a significant outlay.

Not paying this year - and didn't in 2006 either. I have every other year since I became a s/t holder in 2004.

They used to make you get a bank check, and deducted a "service charge" before applying the unused portion of the payment to next year's tickets.

Assuming they've done away with those practices (and I think they have), I'd send them a personal check for playoff tix and assume it's just a prepayment for my 2013 season tickets. It's not like I'm going to plug that money into some lucrative investment between now and January.

If they ask me to eat a $25 service charge and stand in line for a bank check, there's a fair chance I'll pass.

I don't have a dog, so it would be a BYOP sort of situation.

In the words of Larry David, "Send me the invoice I'm going to rip it into tiny pieces and I might even pee on it."

I am a season ticket holder. The idea of tying up even a penny and waiting for the return check or giving the Sox the time value of my money as a credit against next year's bill is laughable to me.

If the inconceivable happens and I choose to go to games, I'll resort to Stub Hub etc.

Last night was the best time I'll have at Fenway in 2012. By far.

Is this left to the discretion of the individual club, or is MLB approval required?

For all of their money grubbiness -- and they are the kings of greed -- NFL teams require League approval to sell postseason tickets. I have had season tickets for a long time and have never had the post season offered to me with such implausible chances of actually making the playoffs.

I used to have season tix back in the 1970's but gave them up after the 1980 shit-show, when they lost Fisk, to stupidity. I just had it with the Haywood-Buddie circus. I still went to 15+ games a year, (it was easier then to buy game day tix at the box office) but wanted to send a message.

If I had season tix today and assuming i did not need them for business,I might want to send the same message: Fuck You assholes..

I think MLB has to sign off on it, but the invoices usually come out around the 20th to 25th of August. If a team is 7 games out of the race, they have to send out the bills. Ask the 2011 Cardinals.

MLB gives each team the "go ahead" to print invoices for post-season play. The post-season is completely controlled by MLB, including ticket pricing.

I don't think they will even be close enough for a wild card. They don't have a winning record and I don't think they will until the end of September when it will be too late and everyone will suddenly find their "form".

You know those greeting cards where you can make a voice recording? I'm going to record myself laughing hysterically, then saying "You've got to be kidding me!" and send that back to Yawkey Way if and when I receive the post season invoice this year.
