Hernandez has looked quite good tonight, perhaps his best outing of the year so far. Probably done after throwing 99 pitches through 6 innings, allowing just 4 baserunners, one run, while striking out 7. ERA is now 3.65 in AAA after 5 starts. I didn't know how Hernandez would translate moving up to AAA, but so far so good. He's also up to 125 innings so far this year, which means next year he could realistically push for a rotation spot and provide 180+ innings at the back-end of the rotation if he keeps pitching well in Pawtucket this year.

Gomez and LaRoche go back-to-back to take the lead, 4-1. LaRoche absolutely demolished a hanger to left field.

He's not even Rule 5 eligible until next offseason, so I'd bet against his pushing for a rotation spot next year. He is definitely pushing to be a serious part of the Red Sox plans as far as rotation depth goes for next year, but more around the 7-10 range on the depth chart than breaking camp with the team.

I've never seen him pitch, but I've always imagined Hernandez being a Gabbard-type. Fill a depth role with the ability to occasionally surprise with a brilliant start, especially with a strong D behind him (coughIglesiascough).

Some tidbits that might interest those who weren't watching,

Iglasias made a brilliant play ranging back on a popup way into centerfield to save a hit; his double was a hard groundball just inside the first base foul line.

Linares looked very bad on curveballs all night, at one point swinging in missing at the same curveball on three straight pitches; only one of the 3 would have been strikes. There was a report that Linares was vulnerable to the curveball and that's why they left him at AA so long; last night was a big piece of evidence in favor of that report.

Chris Carpenter was only hitting 93 on the Buffalo gun; that seems way down from the upper 90s we were told to expect; though it did seem to have some late "hop" to it that made it faster than the gun might suggest.

I also thought De la Torre looked good, topping out in the 94 neighborhood with movement running in on righties.

The announcers made a passing mention that LaRoche was throwing around 90 when he pitched (and won, 1 IP) a game earlier in the season. His father was a MLB pitcher of course. I wonder if he'll give that a go since his career as a position player seems to be trending in the wrong direction.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the eighth on Monday in Buffalo, Mauro Gomez and Andy LaRoche smashed back to back home runs, part of a four run inning, and ultimately topped the Bisons 5-1. The PawSox strung together 5 straight hits against loser Pedro Beato. Each team had scored a single run in the first and that was it until the eighth inning explosion. J.C. Linares and Gomez had two hits apiece. Gomez' homer was his 24th of the year. He had three RBI. Gomez leads the PawSox with 71 runs batted in.

Starter Chris Hernandez was solid for six innings. allowing a run on three hits. Hernandez struck out 7 hitters. Chris Carpenter pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Jose De La Torre went the eighth and ninth to complete the victory. At one stretch in the game, PawSox pitchers retired 21 straight Buffalo hitters. Carpenter, 1-0 earned the win.

SALEM

Game Story

Michael Earley led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly as the Winston-Salem Dash completed a 4-3 Carolina League comeback victory over the visiting Salem Red Sox on Monday.
Salem was up 3-0 after the third inning, but Earley had an RBI single and came around to score in the fifth inning. Michael Blanke then belted a two-out homer in the sixth to tie the score at 3.
Brandon Short was 3 for 3 with an RBI for Winston-Salem, and Blanke and Earley each were 2 for 4.
Drew Hedman and Adalberto Ibarra were each 2 for 4 with a double for the Red Sox.
Salem starter Miguel Celestino allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four. Reliever Andrew Jones gave up Blanke's tying homer and Earley's game-winning run, though the latter was ruled unearned because of an error by third baseman Zach Gentile on the sacrifice bunt.
Jones allowed four hits and struck out one in three innings.
Winston-Salem starter Justin Collop allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out three. Kevin Vance got the win, giving up one hit in one inning.
Taylor Thompson pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to earn his 10th save.

DRIVE

Game Story

After losing all three games of a short road trip to Savannah, the Greenville Drive started a brief three-game home stand in similar fashion.
Rome held off Greenville at Fluor Field Monday for a 3-2 victory before the Drive’s second-largest home crowd of 7,105.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Drive, who have dropped six of seven. The Braves (48-71, 30-19), worst in the South Atlantic League in the first half, lead the South Division in the second half.
Greenville (56-62, 22-26) had very little going for itself over the first seven innings. Starting pitcher Mickey Pena (6-6) struggled more than normal, giving up a solo homer and a two-run triple. He allowed five hits and walked three while striking out four over five innings.
“He was supposed to have pitched Saturday (a rain out), and I think the extra day got him out of rhythm a little bit,” Greenville manager Carlos Febles said. “He was locating his pitches. He made a couple of mistakes, and they made him pay.”
At the same time, the Drive offense couldn’t get going against Rome starter Greg Ross. Their first base runner came via a walk in the fourth, and Drew Turocy got Greenville’s first hit in the fifth. He would later be thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice.
Three Drive relievers teamed with the defense to keep Rome within striking distance. Greenville finally generated some offense in the eighth. Jordan Weems led off with an infield single and then stole second base. Jose Garcia hit a single to right to score Weems.
“I was trying to get something started,” Weems said of his hit and stolen base. “I wanted to get in scoring position for Jose. He drives in a lot of runs.”
Gracia cut it to 3-2 with base running. He stole second and then ran all the way home when the catcher’s throw bounced off the dirt and Garcia into left-centerfield. The Drive could not get any runs in the ninth.

Gabbard is probably a fair comparison. Still, I like him a lot from the couple times I've watched him. Next year is probably too early for a real competition at a rotation spot, but I have to imagine he'll be on the short list for call-ups when there's inevitably an injury out of the rotation.
