A meaningless riff on Roxy Music and Jim Lonborg.

The stat-head's manifesto:
I am for a life and time by numbers
Blast in fast 'n' low
Add 'em up, account for luck
You never know

As for me, 2012 can be described at 2:38
Now and then I've suffered imperfection

Last year it was 99 44/100% that they would make the playoffs, so, no sweat, right?

Direct attack on the Indians having been mostly unsuccessful this weekend, I suggest perusal of William Trent's journal for May 1763, quoted here. Blankets and hankies would cost less than Beckett and Lester.

And for music to accompany your reading, may I suggest...

I saw how this works last year.
If it gets down beneath 1 percent, we are in.

If Lester pitches down to his recent standard, we're just about there.

It's amazing what people can do when their backs are against the wall. We're not quite there yet, but we DO have the talent to make one last run. It can start today. Just win, boys, and the rest will take care of itself.

I'm sure this has been figured out here long ago, but what was the actual lowest chance the Sox had in 2004?

My quick math tells me that it was after Foulke walked Jeter to start the top of the 9th in Game 4. The Sox had a 16% chance of winning the game at that point. Plus an (approx) 12.5% chance to win Games 5-7 consecutively.

Which means they had a 2% chance of winning the series at that point. So you are indeed correct.

For games from 2000 through 2009* the home team had a .542 winning percentage. However, if the visiting team scored in the first inning, they went on to win 58.4% of those games. The home team's overall positive winning percentage was largely fueled by the games (~70.4% of all games) when the visiting team did not score in the first inning. Obviously, the more runs scored by the visitors in the first inning, the higher their subsequent winning percentage. When tehy cored 3 runs in the first, they went on to win at a .673 rate (but that only accounted for approximately 3.5% of the total games.

On the other hand, if the home team comes back to score in the bottom of the first after giving up runs in the top of the first, its winning percentage goes up to .545.

*I haven't updated my scoring database recently as it is very laborious.

Lester really seems to be grasping at straws with pitches 2-4 inches off the plate. There's been dozens of looks in to the umpires and taking a step towards the dugout on pitches that aren't strikes over the past month+
