Bard keeps getting worse and worse. They should just shut him down for a week and send him to the GCL and then the instructional league. It wouldn't surprise me at this point if he never throws another pitch in the major leagues.

What kind of contract does he get next year? 3M is a lot to give a guy who isn't a starter or closer; nevermind one with his issues. I think he's done here.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Daniel Bard surrendered three runs in the eighth inning to allow the Red Wings to salvage a split of the two-game series with the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday night.
The 5-3 loss means the PawSox (66-55) fall to 1½ games behind the Scranton Yankees for first place in the International League North division.
Pawtucket starter Steven Wright allowed a pair of runs in the first, but settled down after that. Wright, compensation in the Lars Anderson trade, worked five innings. Reliever Josh Fields tossed a pair of scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Bard (2-1) took the loss.
Che-Hsuan Lin, Mauro Gomez and Dan Butler knocked in the Pawtucket runs. Butler’s came on a double with two outs in the ninth inning, but the threat died. Lin had three hits in three trips to the plate and scored the run in the ninth inning.

SEADOGS

Game Story

Daniels' solo blast off reliever Brock Huntzinger in the ninth inning lifted the Erie SeaWolves to a 5-4 win before 3,095 fans at Jerry Uht Park.
"That was very, very special," SeaWolves Manager Chris Cron said. "Doesn't happen very often. Hell of a way to keep our winning streak going."
Although the Sea Dogs rallied from a 4-1 first-inning deficit, they left 11 runners on base and were 3 of 10 with runners in scoring position.
"It's frustrating," second baseman Ryan Dent said. "You get guys on base, you're pretty much one big hit away from opening up the game."
Then when Erie got its chance in the ninth. Fields hit just his second homer of the season.
Fields was the first batter Huntzinger (3-5) faced. On a 3-1 count, Fields drove Huntzinger's pitch out to right field.
"I knew I was going to get a fastball so I was just trying to put a good swing on it," Daniels said. "Right when I hit it, I knew it was out."
Reliever Rob Waite (1-0) got the win.
The Sea Dogs tied it 4-4 in the fourth on Dent's two-run homer but blew a chance to take the lead.
With the bases loaded and Travis Shaw, a left-handed hitter, at the plate, Jackie Bradley Jr. was picked off third by catcher James McCann.
"That shouldn't happen," Bradley said. "Just a mental blunder right there. Just try to work on getting better, being smarter and not make the mental mistakes like that.
Shaw, recently called up from Class A Salem, hit a two-run homer in Friday's 9-2 loss to Erie.
"We've got a guy who can easily drive in all three of us and I really gave up on a big situation," Bradley said.
The Sea Dogs were having their way with Erie starter James Avery before Bradley's blunder. Avery had allowed a Christian Vazquez double and Dent's homer, then walked Bradley, gave up a single to Peter Hissey and walked Bryce Brentz.
"I thought McCann and (Erie third baseman Rawley Bishop) sold it well," Sea Dogs Manager Kevin Boles said. "There was a delay there. It was a timing play. Both of those guys did a nice job.
"Bishop even told me they've run that play a few times and it's worked in the past. We want Jackie to be aggressive. A mistake was made but we're not going to hold him back."

SALEM

Game Story

Andy Ferguson and Robinson Yambati held the Salem Red Sox to just one run as the Wilmington Blue Rocks scored a 2-1 Carolina League victory at Frawley Field on Saturday.
Salem catcher Carson Blair belted a home run off Ferguson in the third inning, but the Sox could not plate another run.
Ferguson gave up five hits and a walk in seven innings. He struck out six.
Yambati took over in the eighth inning and gave up one hit and one run in two innings. He struck out three to earn his second save.
Salem starter Keith Couch allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over five innings.
The Blue Rocks tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Brett Eibner singled and went to third on a double by Lane Adams. Couch walked Matt Fields to load the bases, then Chelsor Cuthbert singled to bring Eibner home.
Couch then got Geulin Beltre to ground into a double play.
But Eibner scored the game-winning run in the fifth. Couch put Eibner on base by hitting him with a pitch, then tossed a wild pitch to allow Eibner to move up to second. Adams then singled to bring Eibner home.

SPINNERS

Game Story

Earlier in the 2012 season, a win like this was nonexistent for the Lowell Spinners. However, in Hudson Valley on Saturday night, great defense, clutch hitting and a little bit of luck came together as Deven Marrero crushed his second home run of the season with one out in the 13th inning and Lowell defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 6-5 in 13 innings.

The win was the team's 13th in their last 15 games and it cemented the white-hot Spinners into second place in the Stedler Division, as Vermont fell to Brooklyn.

For the second night in a row, Lowell (25-28) jumped ahead early as Mike Miller reached second on an error, moved to third on a single by Deven Marrero and scored as Dreily Guerrero grounded out to first base. The Spinners then tacked on another run in the second as Matt Marquis and Aneury Tavarez led off the inning with back-to-back singles, advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch and after a walk to Tim Roberson, Marquis scored as Zach Kapstein bounced into a double play.

However, Hudson Valley (35-18) picked away at the lead in the second as shortstop Ryan Dunn doubled to right and moved to third on an error by Mookie Betts. He scored on a groundout to David Chester to cut the Spinners' lead to one. That lead disappeared in the third inning as Justin Haley hit the first batter of the inning with a pitch, gave up a single to the second and after a strikeout, catcher Luke Maile singled up the middle to tie the game at 2. Dunn then grounded into a fielder's choice to put the Renegades up by one.

Tavarez then tied the game in the sixth inning, lifting a wind-aided homerun over the right field wall, his third of the season. However, Hudson Valley grabbed the lead right back in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly.

The Spinners, who have found a fighting spirit that was missing through most of the first half of the season, immediately answered in the seventh as Marrero reached on a fielder's choice, stole his 17th base of the season, moved to third on a balk and trotted home on a two-out Chester RBI single.

The seesaw affair continued as Renegade designated hitter Richie Shaffer crushed the first pitch of the seventh by Raynel Velette over the left field wall for his second homerun of the season to put Hudson Valley back up by one but Lowell would not be denied as Miller stroked an RBI single in the top of the eighth through the left side that scored Tavarez to tie the game at five.

The game was a nailbiter throughout, as Hudson Valley loaded the bases with one out in the tenth and seemed to be on the precipice of pulling out a tough victory, but Jadd Schmeltzer was able to induce a rare 5-2-6 double play to neutralize the threat. Two innings later, with runners on first and second and one out, Schmeltzer snagged a line drive back to the mound, which induced a 1-4-6 double play to work out of a jam.

Marrero's home run in the 13th was a no-doubter, as the left fielder did not even bother turning around.

If I'm not mistaken, they gave Andrew Miller a $1.35 million contract for this season; perhaps it was a split contract so that he only got the major league minimum while he was at AAA though. Does Bard have options left? They could give him $3 million if he makes the team but significantly less than that if he's still a mess in the minors. They also have the option of taking him to arbitration, so that the contract doesn't become guaranteed until mid-March, at which point if he can't throw strikes in spring training they could release him for just 1/6 of the arbitration award.

My money is still on an undiagnosed tear in his elbow or rotator cuff. For me, I won't become interested in him again until I hear that his velocity is sitting consistently between 97 and 99 mph.

Nah. All that needs to happen is for this season to end. There's too much clutter and chatter -- in his own head -- to deal with in-season. Get him away from the year, let him mentally get back to reliever mode, let him have some success in that mode, and he'll be back. The single greatest asset he has is that he's been here before. He knows he can make it back.
