PGA Championship is on tap this week at Kiawah. In addition to being the final major of the year, it's the final week to qualify for the Ryder Cup. Current team USA standings:

http://www.rydercup....m_standings.cfm

Tiger Woods, Jason Dufner, Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson currently occupy the 8 Team USA automatic spots. The top 7 appear to be in good shape, but Phil's got Hunter Mahan right on his heels. Phil may find himself off the team of he has another stinker this weekend and Mahan or Stricker grab that final spot. Given his abysmal track record in recent Ryder Cup's and his lackluster 2012 performance (from the Pebble pro-am on), it might be tough for DLIII to take Phil as a Captain's pick.

I'd rather have Striker or Mahan in a heartbeat.

When is the last time Phil played some good golf? Seems like its been forever. That said. Strong team this year. I have some confidence in them.

Phil will be a Captain's pick for sure if he doesn't make it outright. I almost think he'll be captain next go-round as well.

I do think Stricker or Mahan pass him, though. Either way all of them are on the team unless DLIII picks someone like DJ as a surprise pick.

Doesn't the captain pick 4 golfers?

Yeah its low 8 and 4 captain's picks.

If I was DLIII I'd take Mahan, Stricker, Fowler and DJ.

Assuming the standings stay the same, I'd probably go with Mahan, Stricker, Fowler and Furyk with Captains picks. Yeah, Jim has shit his pants twice this year, but he's still playing pretty well overall. 3rd in driving accuracy, 3rd in scoring average, 4th in sand saves, 21st in putting, etc. He's conservative, but pretty steady. You can use him in the best ball and just let him play conservatively and churn out pars, with the occasional birdie thrown in. It'll let his partner be more aggressive.

You're right, my mistake. I'm either thinking of the President's cup or the European picks, I'm not sure why I thought only 2.

Anyway - there's no way Phil is left off the team. I wouldn't pick him, but I also hate saggy tits.

The DJ pick is complete fanboy on my part. I've met him quite a few times and he's a cool guy. I'd really like to see him in contention at another major after what happened at the PGA.

DJ won this year, it's not an off the wall pick. I'd probably pick him, to be honest. He's just been injured - the dude can play.

Definitely not. I think the team would be better off with DJ than Furyk.

Prior to 2008, it was only 2 captains picks http://www.rydercup....story/index.cfm

I'll throw a prediction out there of Tiger, Jason Dufner and Dustin Johnson. Dufner is boring as shit to watch, but it'd be cool to see the past 2 runner ups, both of which lost in excruciating fashion, duke it out on Sunday for the championship.

Tiger has been awful with his wedges, which I think will bite him in the ass again this week. If he can straighten out his wedges, I think he runs away with this. Otherwise, I think since the course has gotten so much rain and will be soft, it will favor somebody that is really long and that can stick their short irons close. That's why I'm going with...

Rory McIlroy.

Rory seems to have figured his game out and destroyed Congressional when it was wet. I think we'll see him do the same this week.

Tiger has been awful with his wedges,

Its amazing isn't it? When I play and I'm within 120 yards, I get upset if I don't get it within 15 ft to the hole. It must be absolutely maddening for a pro.

This weekend? I actually like Paddy Harrington. Its a links course, very windy...I think it will play into a European player's hands.

If there is no wind? Bubba could murder it.

My wedges cost me at least 2-3 strokes a round. My distance control on full shots with them is awful - I'll overcook my wedges constantly.

Rory is -2 through 5 holes after starting on the back 9. If he can go out at -2, the front nine gets A LOT easier. He has a great chance to be near the very top of the leaderboard after the first round. Ditto Ryo Ishikawa.

There is a PGA Championship mobile app that has a live stream of featured groups, so I assume it's out there somewhere on the internet. My guess is pgatour.com, but I'm firewalled at work and can't get there.

TW seems to be all over the place. 2 pars, 2 birdies, 2 bogey's through 6.

Edit: Also, weather is expected for the afternoon, so the morning group might have a big advantage.

To be honest, this isn't really fair. Notah has made a pretty big name for himself with his foundation and golf tournament. It has helped that he knows Tiger and that he's one of the only Native American golfers, but he's done a lot of good for the game.

Rory might be leading this thing by 3 or 4 strokes by the end of the day. Going out in -3 is phenomenal - the only other person that has a shot to be near him, IMO, is Gary Woodland.

Another major where the conditions have basically rendered the course to joke level, at least for day one. It is long, but not any wind at all, and greens are charmin soft.

Hopefully the weather won't wait for Sunday afternoon to actually show up in this one.

Seriously, I was just thinking this a minute ago. The US Open was supposed to be a monster (eventually turned into one), the British was supposed to be a monster (sorta turned into one) and The PGA was supposed to be a monster (looks like it won't).

Here in Ohio, we've had about 2 tear drops worth of rain and 90-100 degree heat for the last month+, yet all of the major locations are getting soaked. I don't get it.

Edit: And as they go live, Tiger and Keegan throw darts in on 8. Should be 2 birdies there.

Lefty is all over the place. He's hit like 4 fairways, and is scrambling left and right. Every time they go to him his in some awkward spot. It's somewhat remarkable he's only 1 over.

My favorite was when he was finally in the middle of the fairway, insignificant wind, 115 yards from the green and an accessible pin with a wedge in his hands, and the announcers all agreed he just couldn't screw the shot up after one of them asked for odds. He ended up about 30 yards left of everything with a buried lie in some of the gnarly junk.

Well almost an inch of rain overnight, so the course will remain, or maybe get softer. At the moment there is a pretty stiff breeze, so that will be a big change from yesterday. No idea if it will hold up all day

Course seems to be playing tougher this morning. A lot of guys are backing up, it's not quite the birdie fest yesterday was. Vijay Singh and Bo Van Pelt are -3 for the day, but everyone else appears to be hovering between -1 and +3.
