1 PM start. Winning is nice, let's try that again.

Also, Kuroda has insane numbers in day games this year, 5 starts, a combined 36.1 23 1 1 5 29, for a 0.25 ERA (!!!).

Game got underway at 1:30. Scoreless in second inning. Chavez singled, is now 13-for-27 of late.

Ibanez just tripled over Berry's leap in centerfield. Sterling said he caught it, then quickly said it was off his glove. Probably neither.

Ichiro singles in Ibanez for a 2-0 lead. Nicely done. A pair of two-out RBI hits.

Oh, rain is expected to return so we have one of those situations again. At least it's finally raining again in the drought-stricken midwest.

It's 3-2 Tigers, bottom of seventh. Avila homered to tie game in fifth, then go-ahead run scored in same inning on a pop-fly doubled that drew chalk on the LF foul line. Tim Welke initially ruled it foul as Ibanez arrived late and saw the ball spin away from him. Ibanez then gave up on ball while Welke changed his call to fair. Needless to say, Girardi got ejected, and then the Yankees announced they would play the game under protest.
Now here in the bottom of the 7th, first-base ump rules Teixeira's foot was off the bag on an infield single by Infante. Swisher also got called out on borderline strike three in top of inning.
Yanks had trouble with this crew earlier in season, too.
Swisher struck out earlier in game and Jeter got nailed trying to steal second on same pitch. Cano then followed with a double off the wall. Then Teix went out quietly.

I'm watching women's soccer, sounds like I'm saving myself some agita thus far.

Teix just used his uppercut swing to smoke a home run down the right field line, long gone. Chavez then drilled an opposite-field homer, dropping his bat and going into a home run trot two steps out of the box. He is now 9-for-16 in this series and looking like the Eric Chavez of 10 years ago. A-Rod shook his hand in the dugout.

Well, that's exciting. Who the hell will Girardi go to in the 8th, though?

YES never showed the bullpen or told us who is warming. My guess is Joba.

I think he trusts Eppley more than Joba currently, might depend on the matchups.

He might just be in for Cabrera, though, and then Logan for Fielder, and then Joba or Eppley after that.

Phelps pops up Cabrera, allows single to Fielder, trips over the rubber and balks Fielder to second, then gets Austin Jackson to pop to right field. Soriano in for four outs, we hope.

Peralta hammers a low and away heater to deep RCF ... where Ichiro runs it down. End of eighth inning. Turning into a really interesting and important regular season game.

Back in the day, we used to call soccer "a third-world" sport.

That's an incredible stat, 10 of the last 12 hits Benoit has given up (going back to June) are HRs.

Why was Soriano in for four outs anyway after pitching last night? I was just watching on Gameday, but seemed like more overmanaging.

It's overmanaging if Soriano blows the save!

Impossible to top the 15 unanswered runs in Fenway when they were down 9-0 IMO.

True. That game had me laughing with delight. But this game today was about beating a team that has ousted NY twice in the playoffs over the past six years. It was about gaining a series split. It was about stopping the losing momentum and winning a close game against a good team.
We didn't know in April that Boston would be a .500 team this season.
Funny thing about Boston. The Sox visit Baltimore next week. Boston could help the Yankees out by playing hard through the end of September.

Eric Chavez with a mammoth series, four straight multi-hit games, 9-16 with 2 doubles, 2 HRs, and a walk, a 1.650 OPS and the game-winning HR today. Take your time, A-Rod!

Jon, Terry - appreciate you guys keeping up the thread today. Was nice getting home and being able to catch up quickly. I saw that Girardi got tossed and appreciated the background.

I'm going to be home on convalescent leave for the next couple of weeks and will actually be able to see some games, assuming mlb.com cooperates. Hawaii gets weird sometimes with blackout restrictions. I'm looking forward to pulling my weight in some game threads :)

Agreed.. That 3rd out in the 9th felt real nice.

Yet another loss with a Fred Garcia start looming tomorrow wouldve put me in a sour mood for the evening.

Also.. The Yanks owed Benoit after he wiggled in & out of trouble in Game 5 last year. This wasnt full payback, but well.. screw him

Kudos to Phelps as well

One thing that shouldn't be lost is that if Leyland doesn't give Jackson the day off in CF, NY almost certainly doesn't score their first two runs, as he likely catches Ibanez' triple.

That makes up for the first game of the series when Leyland put Berry in LF in the 8th inning and moved Dirks to right, setting the stage for the play by Berry on Martin's double that held the tying run at third.
Also, Ichiro went back to RF on Thursday as Swisher DH'd and ran down Peralta's gap shot off Soriano to end the 8th. Swisher might have caught that one. Might.

I don't have an opinion yet on Ichiro's OF range as compared to Swisher's (Ichiro has a very unconventional approach to going after fly balls), but I'm pretty sure that Swisher's arm is better at this point, FWIW.

Do you think Ichiro's arm is sore? I haven't seen him cut loose yet. Most outfielders with strong arms like to show them off but he keeps lobbing the ball back in, or just giving an average toss.

I've seen him try to cut loose a few times, I don't think he has it anymore. The tipoff was that first series against Seattle, when the guys who had just been his teammates ran on him every time they had a chance.
