See that big star?

That big star means we messed AIDS up good. Like we punched it right in the nuts. That's a lot of money.

Before we started this, we though $40K was going to be a challenge. After we started it, we thought is might be an impossibility.

Well, WE SHOCKED THE WORLD!!!

We not only broke the barrier, we shattered it, thanks in know small part to the fact that a lot of SoSHers are weirdly obsessed with fashion.

That said, we're not done yet. There are still a few great items up for bid (visits to TV shows, a week at a cape house, a Malaian soapstone marital aid and others). But we will be done in a week. I'm going to set all auctions to close on Thursday and then we'll get a final tallly out next Monday. After that, we'll declare the two winners of the donation contest, and learn what great moments in Red Sox history they want on the truck. (Note: If you want to beat them out, the bid is $5,100.) I'll tally up the finals on liberals vs. conservatives to give us a shiny new V&N taglines) and we'll do some sort of bracket style tournament to select the third image for the truck. If you contributed but have not nominated an image yet, feel free to do so in this thread.)

But we're not just not finished in the sense that SIC is still willing to take your money. This is, as Churchill said, the end of the begining. When Nip first contacted me about this 15 months ago, we talked about building a long term relationship between SoSH and SIC and between Boston and Arusha. Over the next year, we'll follow as the trusk is purchased and imported, as it is painted and deployed. We'll have pictures of the truck, we'll have video as the truck goes about its work. Hopefully we'll be able to have some chats with workers in the field as well. Eventually, I think it would be fantastic if some SoSHers visited Tanzania and saw it for themselves.

And then there's the issue of how SIC spends the money above the $40K raised. Right now, they're looking at ideas for projects it could support, and we'll keep you posted on that.

Congratulation SoSH, Congratulations SIC. Go to Hell AIDS.

Your pal,

Jose

Great effort Jose, and I know you had some help around the place as well. It's also gratifying how much the members of the site were both willing to put their possessions, passions, efforts and time into this - as well as bid generously on the aforementioned. Definitely a hundred win mini season.

Outside of our first Jimmy Fund drive where we hit a grand slam this is easily my favorite drive.

SoSH has generally gotten worse with charity. It's completely understandable given how long we've done it, the amount of charity requests we're pounded with over new mediums such as Facebook, a historically bad economy, no huge help from outside sources and, yes, the Sox sucking. This is just awesome.

It's pretty cool. Imagine being a 7 year old girl watching your mom suffer and die in front of you, knowing the same creature that took her is living inside of you. Lying awake that night after mom died not only grieving but faced with an uncertainty in life that even with mom you may have starved to death anyhow pretty much is the most shittiest thing that I can picture a single human going through. We've basically, at an absolute minimum, made sure that this will occur one less time than if we did not do this, and that's awesome.

I have great hope that our friends at SIC will provide us numerous updates and pictures for no other reason that I'm super excited to see the things that all of us accomplished.

So, what are the pictures going on the truck?

Well, the fashion boys are probably going to (quite rightly) make the choice, but I'll nominate a few anyway:

Jeezus Nip, buzzkill. This is like Fox showing Buckner highlights right after the ball was "stabbed by Foulke".

It's more like your baby album starting with pictures of the conception, but I think that I see your point ;)

As one of the "fashion guys" I will definitely go for Image #2 above. That is what I was going to pull off the internet anyway. Thanks Shephard 50.

So here's what I have for nominations so far:

Please add in if you've donated and want to.
1. Pedro tossing the Gerbil to the Ground
2. Tek giving Slappy McBluelips a glove sandwich
3. Carlos Quintana
4. Pedro Striking out Jeter
5. Pedro taking a sign from Tek
6. Tek lifts A-Rod "by the onions"
7. Freddy Lynn
8. Foulke after recording the final out on October 27, 2004
9. He was safe by like a foot
10. Manny homers against the Angels, celebrates
11. Pedro from behind homeplate
12. Dwight Evans doing something awesome.

I'd like to get at least four more so we can do brackets

As the 2nd side of the fashion boy duo, I will be happy to hear suggestions. I like the Tek/Foulke picture. I don't love the Arod/Tek picture. I think we should try for celebrations, not animosity. And I don't care if Tek is crushing Arod, I don't think Arod should be anywhere near the truck. I would love to consider the Manny homer against the Angles, which really is one of the best pictures ever. But I can't go with Manny, too much baggage.

I'm trying to think of the best Pedro picture.

It does sort of seem like Pedro needs to be on there somewhere. I also think it's interesting that Ted Williams has not been nominated for anything.

I know it was already nominated, but I love this picture. The connection with the fans is so brilliant.

I feel that Manny and Pedro really need to be on there.

Also, I know it's practically cliche at this point, but one of these is always a good choice...

I agree with this sentiment...

I had a question - do you have to get permission from the photoraphers to use the images? Do we know who took some of the really great ones?

With you JMD20. I want something joyous. As much as I love Tek glove screwing Arod I would hope this truck represents something happy and amazing to the people it helps.

Even if you don't "have" to it's probably something that should be done.

This is a good point. While I am reasonably sure they will never, ever find out (Africa is littered with trucks with pictures), it's the right think to do. Though here's a question for you IP types, if it's not a literal photo reproduction, and is a painted version of a picture, does copyright still apply? Regardless, it's nice to ask.

So here's my thought: We'll select the pictures then we'll try to track down the owners. Once we have the pictures, I may ask for volunteers to help with this

Why don't we have Rip or other artists draw us versions of the originals? It'll look cooler and he'll get something nice to highlight on his/their websites.

It's a derivative work. You could argue that it's a fair use, but in general, yes, copyright applies.
