Pineda is currently hitting at a .981 OPS in the GCL at age 21.

Another guy who hates getting on base with a .301 career OBP. What's the point of such a move? Organization is clueless.

He's old for the GCL at 21. Maybe they are selling high and buying low for once. The twins had high hopes for Valencia but the guy just doesn't walk at all. He also is suffering from a .242 BABIP. Buying high and selling low being relative and circumstancial terms (edit).

Some Twins reporters

shipleykid Valencia has officially declined to comment on trade that sent him to RedSox for GCL outfielder Jeremias Pinedea.

shipleykid RedSox claimed Valencia off waivers, "And we were able to work out this deal about a half hour ago," Antony said.

PMac21 No. It's what happens when you're terrible. RT @TwinsWin1: @PMac21 That's what happens when you are not one of Gardy's favorite "guys".

He's not suffering too much, his xBABIP is .259.

Buying low, selling high, 3B depth... boring, but solid. Anyone know how many options he has left?

309/352/470 against lefties in 2011.
374/441/525 against lefties in 2010.

This season, only 41 PAs against left-handed pitching, and not doing well. He's pre-arb for one more season. So, it seems like they're just adding organizational depth to 3B considering they really have nothing there above AA beyond Middlebrooks. It's debatable whether he gives them anything more than a Nate Spears type (either now or whoever they can attract as a minor league free agent in the offseason).

Pineda doesn't seem like he's much more than a good batting average (12 extra base hits, 5 walks in 142 PAs) as a 21-yr old playing a lot of teenagers while repeating the GCL .

To add to this, Pineda's gaudy OPS is almost 100% BABIP (over .500). He's not walking or hitting for power even though he's old for his level. I think the Sox did OK here. Valencia hasn't put anything together yet, but he's decent 3B depth and has 1B experience as well.

Well, the last two struggling Twins corner infielders the Sox acquired worked out pretty well...

Nick Punto or Doug Alphabet?

I like this as a sell high buy low move. Valencia was good as a rookie and even hit 15 HR last year, could be a useful bench player or AAA option in the future.

Pineda is almost 22, repeating rookie league, has no power and doesn't walk either. I'd be surprised if he ever makes the majors.

I don't consider Punto a straight corner man. But Doug works -- as does the one obtained a bit earlier.

Yup. In addition to Jackie Bradley Jr., the Sox have far more valuable CF assets than Pineda -- including 17-yo Manuel Margot, who they spent $800k to sign.

As for the Valencia depth move, the PawSox did place utility IF Tony Thomas back on the DL yesterday, after he'd already missed all of July.

Can't find much not to like about this deal. Valencia was a pretty promising 3B two years ago as a rookie (.799 OPS) worst case he can be a shuttle guy. Pineda is pretty unlikely ever to make it for reasons several people have expounded on above, so you aren't giving up anything of value.

The 40-man roster is full once again.

Keeps them from having to play Gomez at 3B in case of an injury, I guess. Other than that, doesn't seem like much of a move at this stage

I for one look forward to him hitting a bomb at Fenway, followed by the PA playing "O Valencia!" by The Decemberists.

What system are you using? http://www.fangraphs...-and-the-shift/

Using the best system we have available his xBABIP is:

Valencia xBABIP
2009 2010 2011 2012 2009 to 2011 BABIP BABIP – xBABIP
0.292 0.292 0.281 0.271 0.288 0.345 0.057
0.289 0.285 0.276 0.265 0.283 0.275 -0.008
0.291 0.287 0.277 0.267 0.285 0.242 -0.043

It is so easy to get guys like this, Ciriaco, etc, it just shows how stupid it was giving Punto 2 years. What a horrible decision.
