Earlier this year, there was a thread on David Ortiz's HOF candidacy, and some suggested that David was only qualified for the Red Sox HOF. I am o.k. With strict standards for HOF entry, so I see that argument to some extent. However, if Marty Barrett is a Red Sox HOF player, then, I'm sorry, but Ortiz needs a much higher honor.

Who are next year's inductees? Jeff Frye and Steve Crawford? I understand the desire to have a way to honor long-time Sox, but there's got to be a higher standard of combined longevity and quality than Barrett.

It really depends on whether you believe in setting such standards by position, or if you're viewing them through one single lens. If his numbers are being compared to the Williams, Yazs and Foxxs of the world, he's obviously going to look like shit. So will nearly every other 2B, SS and catcher who's ever played for the club.

Aside from Doerr and Pedroia, who are the best second basemen in Sox history? And who else would you rank above Barrett? Hobe Ferris and his .237/.266/.347/.613 dead-ball-era slash line? Mike Andrews? Remy? Griffin? Doyle? Jody Reed? Jose Offerman???

It's a pretty short list of standouts. In 112 years of franchise history, only Doerr and Ferris played more games at the position, and only Doerr and Pedroia put up better era/park-adjusted offensive numbers for more than 5 seasons.

One strike away from being 1986 World Series MVP. Aside from that, kind of a thin resume.

Hurst was going to be the WS MVP.

As for resume, while he's in town maybe they can ask Marty to take over from BobbyV

Too late, they already offered the job to Schilling.

It's good that Barrett's in, because now maybe 12 to 15 guys from the 2004 team will have to get in. The more glory for those guys, the better.

Did they mention successfully pulling off the hidden ball trick? Scoring the winning run for Pawtucket in the 33rd inning? Suing Arthur Pappas?

Guys, the Marty Barrett b-ref page is unsponsored. Who wants to pitch in so that we can sponsor it before those '86 Mets fans get their slimy hands on it?

I'd say there are about 23 problems if you group the front office as one.
