Oh, and apparently you have to be awake in the middle of the night if you want to see the beach volleyball folks in bikinis.

they need to add an event where you combine the x-country equestrian with the archery. That would be cool.

The Mongolians would totally dominate that event.

The Dothraki would really be unbeatable, however.

the synchornized diving last night was really baffling. I have no idea how that sport is scored, because it seemed like the level of synchronization wasn't the determining factor

Men's fieldhockey!?
Didn't we discuss this yesterday?
Anyway, a Swiss footballer got the boot for being racist on twitter, because people never learn. And Venus and Serena won their doubles match today.

Edit - lodged an appeal of the decision. Going back to badminton before the swimming comes on.

Missy Franklin holding back there?
She does swim again in 20 minutes, so quite possible.

In which case qualifying 8th is threading that particular needle perfectly.

Also, street luge. But instead of a street luge you're in a Radio Flyer wagon. Once you're at speed there'd be hazardous patches (cobblestones, a dirt s-curve, a 90 degree turn), and it'd end with a jump over a creek.

Felt like I was watching a basketball team dribble out the clock rather than launch 3-pointers in an attempt to rally.

In what appears to have been the Bronze medal match in women's epee, there was some sort of controversy that took ages and ages to resolve, and it seems like the Korean athlete thinks she's been totally jobbed when they awarded the match to the German. Now the Korean is sitting on the fencing platform looking like her kid just died.
Edit - lodged an appeal of the decision. Going back to badminton before the swimming comes on.

From everything I am reading about it, the word screwjob doesn't begin to describe what happened. A clock malfunction cost the Korean fencer a shot at the gold, and the rules required her to stay on the piste like a representative in a filibuster. Absurd.

She got totally screwed and then had sit there and try not sob because if she left she wouldn't have even have gotten an appeal (that South Korea had to freaking pay for). The whole thing was a mess and BBC called it cruel.
I wish she gotten it together enough to get bronze but she had already been bawling and sitting for a damn hour at that point, so it's hardly surprising.

Just got back from the swimming event. Seeing four medals handed out (two Golds for US), plus watching Phelps win his semi race was so awesome to experience.
That is really fun!! More pics, please!

random sort of OT thought

It sure looked to me (particularly in the women's event) as though there was some execution spillover into synchronization scores, as well as some reputation scoring.

Have to pay cash to lodge an Olympic appeal?? Have SEC football officials taken over the IOC?
No clue. Someone said it was to try to limit people filing for complete bullshit. Apparently a side effect of Bela Lugosi filing like 40 protests at a time. Also the butthurt swimmers at '08 who knew they lost and still filed because they were bitter.
