I don't quite understand why every time they cut to the swimming arena clearly no one tells the announcers they're on the air until they've been talking about whatever to each other for about 10 seconds about random stuff

Yeah, that's weird. I assumed those announcers would be used for replays online, so they would just be continuing on as normal. Obviously not.

Oh, and apparently you have to be awake in the middle of the night if you want to see the beach volleyball folks in bikinis.

Cool ping pong match going on now between Chinese and Austrian guys. Both seem like real jerks, but hard to tell with sound off.

I had no idea whitewater kayaking was an Olympic sport. Kinda neat.

they need to add an event where you combine the x-country equestrian with the archery. That would be cool.

The Mongolians would totally dominate that event.

It appears the US Men's gymnastics team is in the middle of a major choke job while other countries are performing way above their expectations.

The Dothraki would really be unbeatable, however.

So, China vs Japan for gold and GBR vs Ukraine for the bronze in the men's gymnastics. USA team (Orazco?) had terrible fall on the vault.

China has it. So CHN who qualified poorly nail it on the day, and USA who qualified imperiously choke on the day.

random sort of OT thought

the synchornized diving last night was really baffling. I have no idea how that sport is scored, because it seemed like the level of synchronization wasn't the determining factor

Japan gymnasts on suicide watch. They fucked up on the horse. GBR take silver. Ukraine take bronze.

Two Japanese fall on the pommel during the last rotation. Kinda sad that it comes down to a massive chokejob, but that's gymnastics. CHN 1 GBR 2 UKR 3.

Men's fieldhockey!?

Didn't we discuss this yesterday?

Anyway, a Swiss footballer got the boot for being racist on twitter, because people never learn. And Venus and Serena won their doubles match today.

In what appears to have been the Bronze medal match in women's epee, there was some sort of controversy that took ages and ages to resolve, and it seems like the Korean athlete thinks she's been totally jobbed when they awarded the match to the German. Now the Korean is sitting on the fencing platform looking like her kid just died.

Edit - lodged an appeal of the decision. Going back to badminton before the swimming comes on.

Also, street luge. But instead of a street luge you're in a Radio Flyer wagon. Once you're at speed there'd be hazardous patches (cobblestones, a dirt s-curve, a 90 degree turn), and it'd end with a jump over a creek.

Weird ending to the South Korea-Denmark handball game. Denmark was down 2 with 30 seconds left and failed to shoot until there was only 9 seconds left.

Felt like I was watching a basketball team dribble out the clock rather than launch 3-pointers in an attempt to rally.

and for a little more detail

http://blog.seattlep...osts-her-medal/

From everything I am reading about it, the word screwjob doesn't begin to describe what happened. A clock malfunction cost the Korean fencer a shot at the gold, and the rules required her to stay on the piste like a representative in a filibuster. Absurd.

I know it's lame to make fun of these sports, but when I hear the announcers talk about a table tennis player's greatest strength being "his footwork", and how it shows off what a great overall athlete he is, I can't help but laugh.

She got totally screwed and then had sit there and try not sob because if she left she wouldn't have even have gotten an appeal (that South Korea had to freaking pay for). The whole thing was a mess and BBC called it cruel.

I wish she gotten it together enough to get bronze but she had already been bawling and sitting for a damn hour at that point, so it's hardly surprising.

It sure looked to me (particularly in the women's event) as though there was some execution spillover into synchronization scores, as well as some reputation scoring.

No clue. Someone said it was to try to limit people filing for complete bullshit. Apparently a side effect of Bela Lugosi filing like 40 protests at a time. Also the butthurt swimmers at '08 who knew they lost and still filed because they were bitter.
