Among the many things we learned during the NHL's 2011-12 season: Tim Thomas is a man with some very strong opinions.

On Thursday, Thomas waded into the political arena yet again, throwing his support behind Chick-fil-A, the American sandwich chain whose owner, Dan Cathy, has given millions of dollars to organizations fighting same-sex marriage and recently told the Baptist Press that his company supported "the biblical definition of the family unit."
Thomas' opinion: I'm with you.

Got to love this response:
Another teammate has this to say, according to WEEI.com:
"He isn't playing next year, which means he's not my teammate, which means I don't have to react to his Facebook posts."

Tim....meet final straw.
You had the opportunity to retire a local legend and instead you will always be known as the talented but extremely self centered loon.

Honestly I don't really get the outrage all over Twitter etc. over the things Thomas says. And I'm a guy who generally can't stand neo-cons and the largely moronic crap they spew. But by and large athletes, when they voice any political leanings at all, tend to be conservatives; the Hollywood types tend to be the lefties. I could see if he was some kind of extremist, but this is general middle-of-the-road party line conservatism. Yawn.

I have seen him wake a few times after a short night, and the guy is just not talented. Go to bed, Nick. Don't do it to yourself, or the people you're with.

Also, Thimas is a fucktard cockmonkey

On the one hand, this is a fair point to make. On the other, he's publicly taking a stance that makes him come across as a bigot. So I have little use for him.

And he's a big fan of Glen Beck, so don't discount the "extremist" angle here either. It certainly sounds from his teammate's reaction above that everyone's pretty much fed up with his act.

Bets are that he won't be playing for Brian Burke anytime in the future.

I agree, but the vitriol may be aimed as much at the media as it is at Thomas. Imagine how incredibly annoying it must be to have media members reading you Tim Thomas Facebook posts and asking you "what do you think about that?" The comment may be less about Tim's political opinions and more about relief at finally ending the inane line of questioning

I definitely lean right and think the Tea Party gets shit on for ridiculous reasons. But I hate when athletes open their yaps about politics. And musicians. And actors. And, frankly, anyone. And I also hate players that quit on their team and leave them hamstrung with huge cap hits.

But yeah. Definitely kneejerk Republican hate.

Not all Republicans are anti-gay. I think most of the vitriol here is not politically related, and more to the ridiculousness of his posts. His references to God punishing us heathens as if it is an expectation is a little off, no?

I just wanted to state for the record that I am hating on him because he is a homophobe tea party whackjob. And no, not all Republicans are anti-gay, just the vast majority of them.

I prefer to think if his good times, though, like when he left buttfucked Roberto Luongo with his bacon torpedo and left the Sedins slipping on Luongo's maple syruptorum.

Syruptorum sounds tasty. And yes, we will always have 2011.

I bet Thomas is just bitter that he didn't have his own fancy chant that Tuukka did, and now he's just lashing out at others to vent his pain on someone else.

More nonsense.

Maybe it's true among rural communities in Kansas, and among the Michelle Bachman supporters. But it's not generally true among the "majority" of Republican voters. After all, Bachmann campaign fizzled out pretty quickly once the die hard Republican voters actually started voting.

I could go on and point out the rather huge difference between being against gay marriage, and being "anti-gay". One poster was clearly insinuating that all Republicans were the latter. Expressing one's support or lack thereof for gay marriage is hardly a crime, nor should Thomas' tweets be grounds for giving back the trophies.

Having said that, Thomas would be crossing a line if he were still an active member of the team; he chose a different path, so he's free to do what he wishes. As one former teammate said, his tweets no longer mean anything to the guys that are still on the team.

Do please go on, because to me there doesn't seem to be such a huge difference. A policy that directly harms gay people while conferring no benefit on anybody else is hard to construe as anything but anti-gay.
