G (5): Rondo, Bradley, Terry, Lee, Dooling
F (5): Pierce, Garnett, Bass, Sullinger, Joseph
C (2): Wilcox, Melo
with some of the positions being flexible. That leaves one more player for the active roster, and room for 2 (or is it still 3?) inactives. With the Green signing, and if the reported Collins and Christmas signings happen, then the roster is pretty much set
G (6): Rondo, Bradley, Terry, Lee, Dooling, (Christmas)
F (6): Pierce, Garnett, Bass, Green, Sullinger, (Joseph)
C (3): Wilcox, Collins, Melo
Pietrus is still a UFA.

Kind of figured they had too once they traded Moore. Dooling was serviceable last year, came in with some energy and played good D.
This is where I am at. I'd have preferred Moore -- who has more upside -- but as it's the 5th guard on the depth chart were talking about I'm not that concerned either way. In fact, a reliable if unspectacular Dooling may wind up being more valuable for the 2012/13 season anyhow.

Dooling stepped it up in the playoffs and seems like a good locker room guy.
Plus, he's the only one one the team that seems to get through to Rondo so I am happy to have him simply as a Cassell player/assistant coach type of guy.

According to the Celtics roster webpage, they have 11 players on the roster. Adding Dooling brings it to 12:
G (5): Rondo, Bradley, Terry, Lee, Dooling
F (5): Pierce, Garnett, Bass, Sullinger, Joseph
C (2): Wilcox, Melo
with some of the positions being flexible. That leaves one more player for the active roster, and room for 2 (or is it still 3?) inactives. If the reported Collins and Christmas signings happen, then the roster is pretty much set, save 1 or 2 more players for inactives role, right?
G (5): Rondo, Bradley, Terry, Lee, Dooling, (Christmas)
F (5): Pierce, Garnett, Bass, Sullinger, Joseph
C (2): Wilcox, Collins, Melo
Pietrus is still a UFA.
I think you left Jeff Green off your organization chart for the Celtics
PG - Rondo, Terry, Dooling
SG - Lee, Bradley, Christmas
SF - Pierce, Green, Joseph
PF - Bass, Sullenger, FabMelo
C - KG, Wilcox, Collins
I am not sure where there is room for Pietrus and Marquis Daniels unless you bump off Christmas and Joseph. It will be a very interesting training camp.

I like this. He had his moments in the playoffs and seemed like a good team guy. Based on some of the interviews I saw during the playoffs, he seems bright and like a future coach. Players like that are usually a good influence on the some of the younger guys.
This is certainly not a make or break move...but a good one nonetheless.
He was on Toucher & Rich a bit last year, and he specifically seemed like a big influence on Avery Bradley.
More specifically:
http://boston.cbsloc...s-a-good-gumbo/Dooling’s leadership was on display Sunday afternoon before theCeltics beat the Miami Heat 91-72 at the Garden. Along with Marquis Daniels, Dooling made sure to have second-year guard Avery Bradley ready to go with his matchup against Dwayne Wade.
“We were like two big brothers who were hyping their little brother up for his first fist fight,” Dooling said of their pregame pep talk. “I would say one thing to motivate him and then Marquis would chime in. Then I would go and Marquis would go. I think Avery literally could have ran through a wall after that conversation.”
“I just told him; as good as D Wade is offensively, you’re just as good defensively,” said Dooling. “Then Marquis would come in and say something with authority. Then I asked him ‘What’s driving you?’ Then Marquis would come in and say something. We just had his confidence through the roof. It’s great to have young guys like that who has fun with us, respects us, and makes us proud when he goes out on the court and plays the way he is playing.”

Yeah, I recall some Heat players saying this as well during the play-offs last year. He's VP of the Player's Association and he seems like a guy who gets along with everyone. Basically a mensch. I like those guys (think Tyron Lue before he retired) as end-of-the-bench types who can play the role of team conciliator over the course of a long season. Plus he can handle the ball a little, shoot, and play some defense.

You must be referring to this?:Dooling once fought Ray Allen. I'd post a video, but damn lurker status.
I'd never heard of it before. It casts an interesting light on if/when they match up this season. Any idea what precipitated it? They both seem pretty unlikely characters to fight, though I know Ray can't stand Kobe. Never thought of Keyon and Kobe as in any way similar.

Christmas is unguaranteed and likely battling it out with Jamar Smith (also an unguaranteed signing this week) though there is a chance neither makes it.According to the Celtics roster webpage, they have 11 players on the roster. Adding Dooling brings it to 12:

I'm fine with Dooling because they still have the BAE and room to use it. Question is, on whom?
I think they should save it for a buy-out during the season. That little bit over the minimum isn't a ton, but maybe it's enough to convince someone to come here and not somewhere else.

Agreed. I don't see many guys out there on the market who would pass anyone on the existing depth chart, and they have pretty impressive depth at all positions other than small forward. If there was someone out there who would be a natural behind Jeff Green, I might press the button. Otherwise, like you, I'd wait to see how things unfold.I think they should save it for a buy-out during the season. That little bit over the minimum isn't a ton, but maybe it's enough to convince someone to come here and not somewhere else.
I still hope that Pietrus comes back but I'm guessing his pride has been damaged enough that he's not willing to take the economic hit that the veteran minimum would require.

Off topic but that video is such a slice of the NBA from 6 or 7 years ago. Howard looks so young. Turkoglu is on his first run with Orlando. Rashard Lewis and Ray are still on Seattle. I wonder what precipitated the brawl, Dooling looked furious.

I'd rather they saved the BAE for next year, no one out there now would get minutes on this team.
Carl Landry wouldn't get minutes? Of course he won't play for the BAE but you never know when a bargain will materialize.

You see Landy getting minutes over Bass and KG?

I bet he'd be in the rotation. He a good player.
You can save the BAE for next year, but the issue of what you can get for $2M will be the same.

Right now I don't see any bargain players who are still FAs and who might be willing to play for $2M. But maybe Ainge does.

..a question. can a team use part of the bae one year and another part a second year on a second player?
No. The CBA says "....that the Bi-annual Exception or any portion thereof may not be used in any two (2) consecutive Salary Cap Years." This language appears in Article VII, Section 6(d)(2) of the old CBA and I do not think it has changed in the new one.

Right, if you could split up the Bi-annual exception, then there would be no such thing as a Bi-annual exception, since you could use it every year. Split it in half, and add it to a league minimum.
The rule is the same for the MLE. If you haven't used it on or before the last game of the year, you lose it (or any unused portion of it).

Rewind: At the time, Allen played for the Seattle SuperSonics and Dooling was a member of the Orlando Magic. Allen elbowed Dooling, who pushed Allen to the ground, and the fight spilled into the courtside seats. Dooling later tried to chase after Allen in the hallway to the locker room. There were suspensions and ejections, but that’s all in the past now.

I am confused. Why didn't this get announced simply as a retirement? Why did the Celtics feel compelled to say that they had waived him? Did he decide to retire after the waiver was announced? Couldn't that have been figured out behind the scenes?
I'm sure retirement vs waiving has different salary cap/CBA ramifications.

Seems like he was also incredibly tight with KG and Rondo. Wish we could keep him as an assistant coach, but it sounds like from the article that he is ready to move on to other things in his life.

This is a must read article about Dooling. I give him a ton of credit for rising up from his tough past and making it in the NBA for 12 seasons.

Dooling update
Dooling was exhibiting behaviors familiar to soldiers returning from war zones. But Post Traumatic Stress Disorders aren't limited to those who fight in wars. Police officers, firefighters, anyone subject to a severe emotional episode can suffer from PTSD. Dooling's problems came to a head in August.
He was at home, playing in the street in front of his home with his kids. A neighbor thought he was playing too roughly with the kids and called the police.
There is uncertainty about how many officers showed up -- 10? 12? 20? -- but it was more than one. The Doolings were new to the neighborhood. They know the police were just doing their job, responding to a call. But a bunch of cops showing up, unannounced, banging on your door is a little disconcerting.
"So I ran to the door to see what was going on," Keyon Dooling said. "I was like, 'Who is this knocking like they're the damn police?' That's what I said to myself. So when I got to the door, it was really the police. They was like, 'Get on the ground, get on the ground, get on the ground!' So I got on the ground." [...]
Dooling was taken away and hospitalized for evaluation. He didn't remember voluntarily signing into the hospital. The details are hazy, in part, because he was immediately put on medication. One of the primary symptoms of PTSD is paranoia, and Dooling was surely paranoid. He didn't want to see anybody -- or anybody to see him.
"They try to find the right dosage of medicine," he said. "Unfortunately, the dosages are so high that they start out with, all the side effects hit you. And unfortunately, it's [during] visiting hours. So when my wife was coming, I was scared, because I had no control over what I said, what I thought. It was a bad situation." [...]
After a week, Dooling was ready to leave the hospital. But he had a lot of work yet to do. He knew playing this season would make no sense, which led to the abrupt retirement. He had made strides spiritually. But he had to deal with the memories of the abuse. He had never told Natosha.

I think its amazing that he was able to stay sane as long as he did, and its beyond impressive that he is being so open.
