Well, this might be a good night for the Yankees' offense to wake up. A's are throwing Jarrod Parker (6-4, 3.16) a righthander with 41 walks in 91 innings this season. Parker went 11-8 in the Class AA Southern League in 2011. He has given up 10 runs in his last 10.1 innings after some lights-out performances (1 hit in 8 innings against Texas back in May) earlier in the season.

Phil Hughes is 6-2 in his last 10 starts and appears to have settled in as a solid middle of the rotation starter for the Yankees. That is an improvement over last season, when his career was at a crossroads due to a dead arm. Once upon a time, Hughes had been ticketed as a No. 2 but he doesn't seem to have put-away stuff. Kuroda and Pettitte (when he returns) are better options for No. 2. Hughes and Nova are pretty solid as the 4-5 hurlers when this rotation is healthy.

Swisher won't play tonight and is day-to-day with what he describes as a minor left leg injury, not a hip flexor, more like something in the quad muscle. Might be seeing some DeWayne Wise tonight if Girardi chooses. Ibanez only played two innings last night, coming in for Swisher, so he's an option, too.

Watching Andruw Jones turn a double into a triple last night because he's not fast enough to run down gap shots anymore, you wonder if the Yanks might not be better off renting Shane Victorino for three months. He's one of the guys out there. There's not much to fix here and Cashman sounds like he's going to stand pat. But Gardner's surgery may have changed his thinking, especially with Ibanez and Jones have to play more games in the outfield with only Wise and Nix as backups. Yanks also lack a true CF backup for Granderson. Wise is not a CF replacement.

Victorino is a switch hitter, but has been terrible against RHP this year (.620 OPS). Still maybe an OK fit, would you give up Betances for him?

Wise gets the start today:

Derek Jeter SS
Curtis Granderson CF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Mark Teixeira 1B
Raul Ibanez LF
Eric Chavez DH
Russell Martin C
Dewayne Wise RF

Betances has been in the farm system six years though he is still only 24. Maybe another organization can straighten him out. If he has enough value to bring in a three-month rental like Victorino, I would sacrifice the kid. He was terrible in AAA ball this season, seems to be doing well in AA (2-2, 2.94 ERA).

On an unrelated note, we keep hearing how the Yankees "overvalue" their prosects but I look around MLB today and see Melky still hitting .350, Austin Jackson having a strong season in Detroit, and Cano building a HOF career in pinstripes. It's a little early to judge Montero but he's going to be a solid big league hitter and Seattle has been pleased with his defense. He is not a disaster behind the plate. He has started behind the plate in 35 games and DH'd in 43. Makes you wonder why Boston doesn't bring Lavarnway up and throw him into the lineup.

Ian Kennedy was a top 5 NL pitcher last year too, not so much this year. And Clippard has been very good for WAS in recent years.

Don't forget Robertson and Gardner, though I don't tout Gardner quite as highly after seeing how this team replaced his speed and defense with mashers and actually got better.

Cespedes hits them further than anyone. Walk him all night.

Phil at 60 pitches in bottom of fifth. Who is this guy?

The 1978 Yankees would win this game, 3-2.

Not happening. Jones fans to end it. Well-played and pitched game by both sides. Parker had a great change up and threw strikes all night. Hughes gives up two homers and little else.

I am not enjoying this series.

It's payback for the A's. After the first game, Oakland's starter was in the locker room, telling his teammates, "Hey, we just beat the Yankees!" They're young and on a roll. Yanks had been rolling for 49 games (36 wins). Long season.
