As Red Sox fans, we’re excited about your return to Fenway. Last year didn’t go how we wanted it or, I’m sure, how you wanted it. That’s why we’re writing this letter. With your injuries in the rearview, we thought this would be a good time for you to get a fresh start with the team and with the fans of Red Sox Nation.

We, the Red Sox fans, at Sons of Sam Horn, want you to be the Red Sox face of our fundraiser to fight AIDS in Tanzania. We’ve already raised more than $25,000 of the $40,000 we need, and we hope that you can be part of getting us to our target. To be clear, we are not asking for a donation (though if you want to give one, or provide an item to auction, that would be amazing). Rather, we are asking for you to join us as part of the Red Sox community in spreading the word.

You are the only player we’ve asked—you’re our consensus first choice. We chose you because you’re reputed to be a terrific guy and we want you to succeed with the Red Sox and to feel like Boston is your community too. Its probably too late, or they are probably too far gone already, but what if all the SoSHers attending the bash game tonght were to hold up signs all at once - might make a bigger impression and catch the cameras.

I don't know what that sign would have said, but I don't think it would have been constructive.

Dear Carl,

We regret that you were unable to join us in fighting AIDS. That said, we did manage to raise the money without you, so no harm no foul.

Still, it's kind of sad that you missed out on a chance to really connect with our community. So here's another idea for you to get in good with Bostonians--take up candlepin bowling. People in Boston love that shit.
