Seriously, ithe whole rush to trade Kevin Youkilis reminds me of the offseason when Willie McGee wanted to play for Boston and Lou Gorman famously asked, "Where would we play him?"
Since the dumping of Kevin Youkilis, there has been about 2 games where he wouldn't have easily slid into the lineup as an injury replacement. As they often say when teams start to run into playing time issues, "These things have a way of working themselves out."
But Cherington once again paniced and sold low on a very valuable asset. So, chalk up another black mark on their system of major league talent evaluation over the past few years. The dumping of Youkilis will end up being as costly as the the contracts given to Cameron and Jenks, just from a different angle.

Ortiz said he didn't hear a pop. "I think I'll be all right,'' he said, but was pretty grim-faced as he left.

Last August Ortiz missed nine games with bursitis in the same (right) heel. Have a suspicion this is related
Edes also said Ortiz was *not* on crutches.

Was fearful it'd be a lot worse. Now gotta wait out the MRI on pins and needles (PNI)

Not torn. MRI is due diligence.

Does Pedro Martinez have to wake up a deceased team doctor and drill him in the ass?

The achilles tendon isn't a muscle.Very hard to evaluate a muscle injury in the immediate aftermath. Hope he is okay, but the MRi is needed.

Also, I think plympton is largely right, but that every thread doesn't need the same five guys having the same discussion.

He's just setting up the pinch hit walk off HR for the bash.

Pretty sure I won't be seeing that.

i would expect them to keep Lavarnway catching on a regular basis in Pawtucket. If Papi hits the DL they will probably go with Mauro Gomez who is hitting for a lot more power than Lavarnway. My problem with the Youks trade all along was that he was sent to a team the Red Sox may be battling with for a WC spot. I hate the fact that he can contribute directly to the Red Sox missing the playoffs not just by absence. I would have only traded him to the NL or one of the few teams in the AL that is definitely out of it.
That something that was forseeable when the trade was made -- an injury to one of Ortiz, Gonzo or Middlebrooks -- has occurred doesn't change the analysis. The Sox apparently reasoned that keeping Youks around without a clear role was worse than the risk of not having Youks to plug a hole, and while I'm not sure I would have made that decision, I'm also not privy to what was happening behind the scenes and just how difficult it would have been to have kept him.
Hopefully, the news on Papi will be good and he'll only be out for a few days. But if he's out for a while, isn't the move to promote Lavarnway and make him the DH? I'm assuming that when they made the Youks trade, they knew they could use Lavarnway as they did last year if Ortiz got hurt.

I would think it more likely that it allows them to DH Crawford and play Nava in left, leaving Sweeney to platoon with Ross in right. Of course, that is presuming that Sweeney is healthy himself. He didn't see action last night with a righty starter on the mound, and it was Nava who replaced Crawford defensively in the 9th.What this injury definitely does is delay any trading of Sweeney for now until Ortiz comes back. The injury allows the Sox to DH Crawford and play Sweeney in LF, so not to stress the elbow for a few days.
Saw a stat yesterday that said that it was the first time in history that 11 teams were over .500 at the same time in the American League. And every team over .500 was within 2 games of a playoff spot.As of when I looked yesterday there were only 3 teams that were out of it; KC , Seatle, and MN. Everyone else was within 1.5 games of the 2nd WC, and the Sox were in the back of that pack.

So, how about that Ortiz achilles injury?
I agree. I'm frantically waiting for news on this injury.

"They already did the MRI, and the doctors will give me the results this afternoon," Ortiz told Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportesLosAngeles.com. "I don't have anything broken, but I'm in a lot of pain, and the heel is swollen."
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine told reporters Monday that he didn't think Ortiz would miss more than a few days. But Ortiz expressed some uncertainty Tuesday when asked if he could end up on the disabled list.
"Right now, I don't know," Ortiz told Rojas. "Hope not, but this hurts a lot."

I guess the debate is who makes the most sense to fill his spot in the lineup depending if the DL is involved or not.

Not real definitive news, but at least being better that a 100% guaranteed DL stint. Not having him in the line up is a big blow, but the timing is somewhat tolerable.

If no DL, some rotation of Ross, Sweeney, and Nava I would think. Or if Pedroia is truly ready to play every day by thurs., Ciriaco in the mix as well. Of course, I fully expect the MRI to be bad and for him to be out for a month. If DL, Lavarnway brought up, timed with a trade of Shoppack perhaps?

Sox brass at least discussing possibility of DL for David Ortiz but no decision yet. There doesn't appear to be major damage to Achilles.

I'm tempted to say DL him and give him a chance to heal properly. The only thing making me hesitate is that the two most plausible candidates to bring up, Lavarnway and Lars, are both ice cold at the moment. But I'd rather have eight weeks of healthy Papi than nine-and-a-half weeks of gimpy Papi.
Didn't he miss some time with something similar in the past and pick right up after 7 or 8 days?

Yes, he had an injury to the same part of his body, but we don't know yet if this time it is injured to a similar degree or if it is worse than that previous injury. Don't think that he came back in a week from it before means we should expect him to do it again.Didn't he miss some time with something similar in the past and pick right up after 7 or 8 days?

It should be noted that the above is Cafardo. Especially since Bradford Says:
Ortiz probably out at least a week. Decide on DL tomorrow.

David Ortiz wearing a walking boot, said he is likely out for a week. 2nd opinion tomorrow before Red Sox decide whether to put him on DL.
EDIT: Sorry, didn't reload my browser and see a bunch of tweets updating his condition
