Atchison to the DL with forearm tightness. Tazawa called up.

Atchsion is second in the league in relief innings, with 43 IP in just over half the season. I'm not really surprised that he's on the DL after that workload. Hopefully he'll be fine after the break.

Of course! Murphy's Law continues its assault on the Red Sox. I'm thinking Valentine could maybe have found a slightly better spot to use Tazawa for his first time back in the majors than the middle of the Rays lineup in a game that the Red Sox really, really needed to win. Yes, a 4-run lead is somewhat low leverage, but where was Padilla today? Is he the next one headed to the DL?

Wasn't that a classic "let's see what we've got here" move? Four-run lead is only "somewhat" low lev? I liked it. If we believe Tazawa is good, that's his spot right there.

If I recall correctly, his first use ever was bases loaded against the Yanks - he's a big boy by now.

Thankfully both Bard and Carpenter have looked great lately, making RH relievers a pretty deep area (almost forgot Wilson)....

I wouldn't mind eventually seeing what the sox got for Theo, heard that he was hitting 99mph on the heater at AAA

It's a tough break for Atch though, he was the MVP of the first half, although he looks to be 39 years old he's only 34 and should be able to eventually recover.

Atchison is 36, he turns 37 before next year starts. He's done. Sucks for him to get hurt now, although at least he made $500k+ this year. Dammit.

What about Mark Prior?

I'm confused - why DL him? He could still play left field, right? He's got as much chance to hit breaking balls away and in the dirt as Crawford does...

I wrote this post. Then I looked at his numbers in Pawtucket. 31 K's and 8 hits in 18 innings is great. 3 HR, and 18 BB's are not so great.

MikeSilvermanBB: Atchison has torn UCL

What a shame: Atchison mastered his killer slider a few years ago and finally got recognized as a good major league reliever this year, but it seems to have taken the customary Red Sox toll on his elbow. It seems that he didn't have a rubber arm after all.

ScottLauber:

Dr. James Andrews told Scott Atchison that he believes tear in elbow ligament was pre-existing condition that he can pitch through #RedSox

PeteAbe:

On advice of Dr. Andrews, Scott Atchison will try rest and rehab instead of Tommy John. Hopes to return this season.

Hmm...Atchison is 36 (March birthdate) so maybe he's thinking he'll use however many bullets he has left and then call it a career. Taking a year to recover from TJ and then potentially another year to really get back to full strength may very well be a non-starter for a 36 yr old middle reliever.

He might try the platelet injection treatment that revived Takashi Saito in his late 30s. Atchison doesnt have a fastball good enough to get by without his slider, so the strain on his elbow is likely to be ongoing.

The same thing that Crawford got - sometimes maybe it helps, other times...

I think Atch figures that if he gets TJ, his career is over - someone with his profile isn't likely to come back at 37 or 38. If he tries to make it back without surgery but fails, he retires and never has to go through the surgery and the subsequent rehab. I hope it works out for him, he seems like a good guy who's had a hell of a run this year.

I'm getting a feeling that about 20 years from now, a new generation of Red Sox fans will be saying "what the hell did Scott Atchison do that he ended up in the Red Sox Hall of Fame?"
