This should maybe be in the "Your Favorite Band Sucks" forum, but I thought it would be of more interest to folks here. Dopes, feel free to move if appropriate / inappropriate.
I just read Root for the Home Team: Minor League Baseball's Most Off-the-Wall Team Names and the Stories Behind Them and thought I would put in a plug for it. It's short (about 100 pages) but features minor league teams from 49 states and Canada. The teams in the book span from the late 1800's to today, and the introduction paints the story of a modern resurgence of goofy team names after a couple decades of largely bland ones. Root for the Home Team is a tour through a small-town America, as the teams themselves take on the character of local industry and history (Casketmakers, Osteopaths, Typewriters) and just plain quirkiness (Perfect Gentlemen). I read through it pretty quickly but it's a great random flip through / bathroom book.
The author, Tim Hagerty, grew up a Sox fan in Canton MA and is currently the play-by-play announcer for the Tucson Padres.

I love stuff like this. Just placed an order. Thanks for the tip!
I have a business partner in Montgomery, AL, and have been trying to schedule a trip to see the Montgomery Biscuits for a year. Had a game all lined up and it got rained out about 30 minutes before the start. Hope to get down there in the next month or so...

I seem to remember ads on the back of baseball weekly that advertised hats for make-believe minor league teams like the Shamokin Dopes, Buffalo Chips, and Village Idiots. I always thought that was a birlliant idea. Is that business still around?
BTW, a link to one man's favorites. Go NYPL.
