Per Pete Abraham: Bailey out until September,Buchholz out until late July.

Does this shape anyone's opinion on the rest of the season?

Not really. Morales / Cook have stepped in decently for Clay and the bullpen has been fine since April without Bailey.

Clay at full strength for August / September would be great. Hopefully that happens.

Dopes: could you edit the end of the thread title to read "late July" (EDIT: Thanks!)

For July:
Beckett
Lester
Doubront
Morales
Cook

August:
Beckett
Lester
Buchholz
Doubront
Morales/Cook

Bailey coming back healthy for the stretch run could be a boost as well, I just can't see this team continuing to weather this storm. The injuries just keep coming.

Is this the most injury-riddled team in Red Sox history? Is this the most injury-riddled contending team in recent memory? Everything about the injuries, their quantity, their timing, their seriousness, and to what players, says that it must be getting pretty close to this kind of historic level. The 2012 Boston Red Sox should be called the Boston Red Cross Sox.

their timing

I agree. It really is biblical. I quoted the timing because just as the Sox are about to get 2/3 of their starting OF back, there are a rash of injuries in the infield and a rash pitcher injuries/illnesses. Add in the fact that the July schedule is either division rivals (Yankees, Tampa Bay, Blue Jays) or first place clubs in other divisions (White Sox, Rangers) and this is a scary development.

Toe makes a great point, but even still, how can we keep whistling past the graveyard here. There's a lot of talk about "if everything breaks right" the Sox could still get into the playoffs. Well, everything is not breaking right, it's breaking wrong. Get two OF, lose a key infielder and a key starting pitcher.

It is all hands on deck time. A bad July and this season will go south very quickly.

Andrew Bailey:

He threw off the mound then was shut down from doing that. Now he he is building back up. From there, Bailey would need 8-10 innings in the minors, which will take 15-20 days. He may not be back until late August or September.

Bailey might not be back until September, but we have no way of judging from this report. If Bailey was throwing from a mound recently, why does he he need to be building back up? How long will that take? According to Abraham, over a month. Why? According to whom? How did Bailey go from being ready to throw off a mound to him him needing to build back up for more than five weeks (dating to the last time he he threw)?

John Lackey:

He is throwing off the mound and could get into a game by September as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. Whether that is a major league game is questionable but it's not out of the question.

Yeah, it is pretty much out of the question, per the Matsuzaka thread - even if Lackey got into a major league game on September 30, that's only 333 days from his surgery.

These seem like Abraham's guesses - there's only one quote from anyone affiliated with the team, Valentine saying that Pods is "close."

Bailey strikes me as the kind of guy who is never actually going to pitch an inning for the Sox. He's going to have one arm-related setback after another until he just... goes away. This is not based on anything medical, just my own cynicism.

Freaking thumbs.

I just ran into an acquaintance, A's fan, had his gold A's shirt on (good guy anyway). We got around to Reddick and Bailey and he immediately said ' Love Reddick, but oh geez, Bailey was always getting hurt with the A's'. Most people that follow the Red Sox knew that (except Ben I guess), but A's fans are usually so laid back and/or non-talkative that they don't say stuff like that. At the time, Bailey and Sweeney seemed like too much for Reddick. Billy 1, Ben 0.

Ah so only one SP and three positional starters left without a prolonged DL trip. It is like Lester, Adrian Gonzalez, Aviles, and Ortiz are the last four left in a slasher movie. Though it seems like Aviles and Adrian Gonzalez may already be dead...

Edit - Forgot Salty. Thank God the position we had the best AAA player in has stayed healthy all year.

Clay Buchholz: Information has been scant. He was last said to have returned to working out. Buchholz last pitched on June 19, so he is going to miss at least a month and will need at least one rehab game or two. Best guess is late July or early August.

Why, exactly? I missed the memo that he went on the 30 day DL......

Well, it's July 6th, and he'll presumably need a start or two in the minors....so....

Clay Buchholz(esophogitis) threw a side session on Friday afternoon and Valentine indicated he could re-join the rotation "late" in the first rotation through or "early in the second" rotation.

Well, of course we knew that, but he did manage to pitch 174 innings over 3 years, including 83 his first year.

The Red Sox are in the middle of a three year plague with DL stints. It defies logic, but it is what it is these days. As a life long Sox fan, it makes it very hard to watch these guys game after game, even though they hustle. As far as attending games at Fenway, its much more obvious, paying premium dollar to watch triple A baseball. Let the sell out streak continue, yea right.

Joe McDonald reports Buchholz will start Sunday in Pawtucket. That puts him on track to start at Tampa on July 14th if there are no setbacks.

I shouldn't have believed Abraham given his history of shoddy reporting. Sorry for cluttering up the main board.
