Bard hit two batters, gave up 2 hits (including a loooong double that was almost a grand slam), and had two wild pitches.

Watching on NESN, I couldn't help but think of Rick Ankiel :gonk:

Didn't record an out. 2 hits, 2 HBP and 2 wild pitches. Nice to see he's right back to where he was when he was drafted. Well done, entire org.

brutal outing by Bard, the dude is so messed up. Reminiscent of Nuke Laloosh at his worst, but at least Laloosh got an occasional strikeout.

They need to pay for him to go on a month vacation in Australia or something. Just get the fuck away from baseball for a while.

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Prior to many of the 18 pitches he saw in his third rehab start for Double-A Portland on Thursday night, Boston Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford was forced to tune out a heckler behind home plate.

The fan -- whom Crawford claimed uttered "a racial slur" -- routinely made his feelings known with regard to the left fielder's $142 million contract and whether he was earning it.

The heckler's message: overrated, overpaid.

Crawford responded Thursday night in the fifth inning of Portland's 11-3 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by lacing a triple to right-center field at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. He reached third base without drawing a throw.

After completing his night in the seventh inning, Crawford was asked about the fan and lingering animosity that may exist after his disappointing 2011 season, his first in Boston.

"Talking about that guy, he actually called me a racial slur to begin the game," said Crawford, who hit .255 with a .289 on-base percentage last season. "He was the only one I had a problem with. People in Boston don't even do that. So I don't know what that was about. It's not that bad in Boston, like that."

I was at the game tonight and he received decent ovations before every AB. After the triple and after being pinch ran for he received loud cheers as well. It's too bad one fan has to ruin the reputation for the rest of the crowd.

So two of our top ten prospect and two of our starting outfielders will never sniff the majors? You are some hell of a scout.

If you don't know how to read, maybe you shouldn't comment on other people's posts.

I said, "I am not sure anyone on the club will get more than a cup of coffee...based on what I am seeing tonight," which is more than "never sniff the majors."

And I also said, "obviously,I am not talking about the rehabs," which seems to exclude Crawford, Ellsbury, and Sweeney.

It's really not that much of a difference. And, it is basically a silly statement based upon one game. Especially in AA... where there is a very good chance you saw a future major league starter on the Portland side. Because there are very few AA teams that won't have on it a future major league starter. [Note... starter does not equal star. Or all-Star. Or Superstar. Starter = Cody Ross or Daniel Nava.]

Edit [10:52] - I went through every year of the Red Sox affiliation with Portland (excluding this season)... and the only season where one could argue that they did not see a future MLB starter was '04 where Hanley Ramirez was only on the team for 32 games.

Edit [10:56] - Arguably the '01 Trenton Thunder have the same issue, with Freddy Sanchez only playing 44 games. But... there was some pitching on that team (Fossum, Duchscherer, de la Rosa).

Edit [11:03] - The best Major League position Player on the '97 Thunder Team was Lou Merloni. He could never be considered a starter. Best pitched was Ron Mahay who crafted a 14 year major league relief career by being left handed.

Edit [11:09] - The '88 New Britian Red Sox had Todd Pratt who was at best a platoon starter. But, they also had Curt Schilling in the rotation.

That is as far back as I'm going to go. Every other team except for the four noted have players who were obvious MLB position starters. 4 teams in 25 years.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

The Pawtucket Red Sox fell to Rochester, Red Wings, 6-4, at Frontier Field in Rochester on Thursday night as the Red Wings put up all of their runs in the fifth inning, many off struggling reliever Daniel Bard.
The PawSox took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning when DH Jason Repko drilled a solo home run. The lead was short-lived, however, as But Rochester answered quickly. Pawtucket starter and loser Tony Pena, Jr. (0-7) took a shutout into the 5th fifth but allowed a walk and two singles to begin the inning and left with the game tied, at 1-1, and two runners on base.
Reliever Daniel Bard’s struggles continued. He Bard faced four batters and did not record an out as the tie turned into a 6-1 deficit. Bard hit the first batter he faced, allowed a 2-run double to Matt Carson, hit the next batter and then threw two wild pitches to allow two more runs to score. Bard gave up an RBI single to Danny Valencia to make it 6-1 before being lifted. Pena was charged with 3 runs in the inning while Bard gave up 3 of his own — throwing 20 pitches (8 for strikes). Of his 20 pitches, only eight were strikes.

SEADOGS

Game Story

But Portland again was unable to stay with the home team and lost its season-high sixth straight, 11-3.
Left fielder Carl Crawford, who has yet to play with the Red Sox this season, got in another four at-bats with the Sea Dogs, and contributed an impressive triple and scored in the fifth inning.
Crawford, who at first complimented the friendly crowd, apparently had a verbal run-in with a fan.
He was asked about one fan who yelled out "overrated" and "overpaid" just before the triple.
"Talking about that guy, he actually called me a racial slur to begin the game with," Crawford said. "He was the only one I had a problem with. The people in Boston don't even do that."
It appeared Crawford may have been referring to a different fan.
"I don't know what that was about," he said. "It's not bad in Boston like that, but I can understand why people can be upset about me signing that contract (seven years, $142 million) and me having the kind of year I had. I understand. They love their team and they want you to produce when you sign a contract like that. I can't be mad at them. All I can do is get ready to play this year and try to produce."
Outfielder Ryan Sweeney, coming back from a toe injury, made his first appearance with the Sea Dogs as the designated hitter and had a single in four plate appearances.
Jacoby Ellsbury, who played Wednesday night for the Sea Dogs, wasn't with the team.
It was unclear which of the major leaguers will be in the lineup tonight for the finale of the three-game series.

SALEM

Game Story

Andrew Gallas' two-out double in the sixth inning broke a 3-all tie and lifted the Carolina Mudcats to a 4-3 win over the Salem Red Sox on Thursday at Five County Stadium.
Bo Greenwell and Tony Wolters each hit a solo homer off Salem starter Miguel Celestino.
Salem came back with three runs in the third inning, all scoring with two outs. Matty Johnson doubled and Heiker Meneses walked. Travis Shaw singled to left to score Johnson, and the runners moved up to second and third on the throw.
Bradon Jacobs then singled to center to give the Sox a 3-2 lead.
Carolina tied the score on a two-out RBI-single by Jake Lowry in the fourth.
Celestino walked Jesus Aguilar to lead off the Carolina sixth. Aguilar went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carlos Moncrief and scored on Gallas' double to center.
Reliever Ryan Pressly came in to strike out Lowery, but the damage was done. Salem went scoreless over the final six innings.
Celestino, 5-5, has allowed 17 earned runs in 11 innings in three starts in the second half of the Carolina League season.
The Sox are 4-14 in the half, and have lost six of their last seven games.

SPINNERS

Game Story

The Spinners dropped their seventh game in a row and 12th in the last 13 games Thursday night as they were crushed 10-1 by the Auburn Doubledays.
The seven-game losing streak is the longest for the Spinners since they dropped a club-record 11 in a row from July 13-23, 2010.
After being held to three hits on Wednesday night, they were held hitless for 61/3 innings Thursday before Kendrick Perkins broke up the combined no-hit bid by David Fischer and Jason Smith with a one-out double in the seventh and scored on a two-out double by Mookie Betts.
Those were Lowell's only two hits of the game.
Lowell starter Yunior Ortega (1-1) gave up three runs in five innings to keep the Spinners within striking range.
But the Doubledays erupted for seven runs in just one-third of an inning against reliever Jadd Schmeltzer in the sixth and broke the game open.

I didn't say "he sucked," but from what I saw I am not ready to label him Boston's up-and-coming center fielder. He did make one very nice catch but one, I think, most center fielders make; however, he did let a single, right at him, go through him and he got a late break on the next batter's single right at him. It's possible that the error he had just made influenced his break. While he had a line-drive single after Crawford's triple, he also had a strikeout and two weak ground outs. My general impression on his batting was that he might not find it so easy to put up gaudy numbers the second time around this league. In his defense (after-the-fact), while the Fisher Cats' starter had an ERA over 5 coming into the game, he has a pronounced ground out ratio (2.6:1) against left-handed batters (this season).

True, Double-A is where most teams keep their prospects but based on what I have seen in five Sea Dogs games this year (and the team's overall performance via standing and stats), I'm wondering where the prospects are. Nick Punto is a starter, too, but who would you rather see in the lineup, him or Nava/Ross?

More importantly, Bradley didn't have the good baseball face that seems so crucial to your analysis.

Did you happen to get a look at his girlfriend for a more complete confirmation of your observations?
