Yankees. Rays. Phelps. Price.

As a Sox fan, how you view this July 4th game just Depends.

Is Suzyn singing the anthem today in Tamper?

As a Sox fan, you want the Yankees to keep losing thru Sunday night. That's a no-brainer. NY is the team with the five-game lead. You always root against the team on top.

Yankee fans are rooting for a miracle today along the lines of Jesus making wine out of water. Phelps is on a pitch count today, similar to what Freddy was limited to on Monday. 75-80 pitches. Let's hope he gets there, Yankee fans. Then it's time to check the condition of the bullpen.

Theo, we try not to mention Suzyn around here. Those of us who listen to games on the radio, pieces of games, can only lament the lamest radio broadcasting team in the history of this franchise. Sterling can't articulate what he is seeing and Suzyn just goes along with the show. Here's a Sterling call from the other night when a Ray hit something hard down the right field line: "There's a drive to right -- if it stays fair, it's a home run. ... It hits off the wall and it's going to be a double. Suzyn, that hit the only part of the wall where that's not a home run."

On the radio, you cannot trust anything the man says because he's usually wrong on first call.

The Yankees are loyal to old guys.

And gals, too?

They fired Mel Allen in 1964 when he was the most recognizable voice in MLB. Mel was in his early 50s then. Tony Kubek quit them because George didn't like honest analysis. This is what the current owners want, a homer who will read the commercial blurbs during every at-bat. Radio teams all around the country are similar. They stick paid promos into the broadcast every 30 seconds and ruin the flow of the game.

I don't blame you, TN. Among the many things I don't like about her is that I can hear the Newton in her voice. She doesn't have a Remy style Boston accent but it's there nonetheless. And being a Yankee toadette and an identifiable Boston native just isn't a good combination.

As to Sterling, he was calling Atlanta Hawks games when I lived there between 85-88 and the only good thing I have to say about him is that he's consistent in his radio butchery. "ANT-TWAN CARRRRRRR!" Projectlile vomit.

Why is that between two such storied franchises, we have such crap radio announcers and the Mets of all franchises kick the living shit out of us (and on TV too)?

As to today's game, yeah, I always want the Yankees to lose unless their winning will directly aid the Sox, such as eliminating a team that is vying for a playoff spot, tis true. But Tampa is a team who will likely be competing with the Red Sox all summer for a playoff spot, so it's not as if the Yankees are playing the Padres.

Darnell McDonald to NY, maybe to AAA? Is he really an upgrade on Wise, who's been playing well?

On this, the 4th of July, we must take a moment to remind ourselves of something we take for granted everyday and never stop to appreciate.

George Steinbrenner is still dead. Happy Birthday!

Is he, though? Do you really think it was a coincidence that he "died" during the one year there was no estate tax, which was the only way that the team could stay in the family? :)

Maybe they should let the pitchers hit and use the DH for Martin.

Phelps not too far away from his pitch cap, looks like today is the day we get multiple innings from DJ Mitchell.

Price looked like he got squeezed a couple of times in that Granderson AB, NY's first baserunner today.

Good aggressive baserunning by TAFKAAR* there.

Yanks probably lost a run that inning due to umpire's interference. As A-Rod stole third, ump had his mask knocked off as catcher reared back to throw to third. Jones then flied to medium right. Maybe A-Rod beats Zobrist's throw to home. Maybe.

YES men never saw that call before, although Piniella sounds like he has dementia. He thought Price was 6-10. They looked it up and he's 6-6, same as always. Guess Lou doesn't like to do his homework. Later, he said Randy Johnson was 6-9, not 6-11.

I did post my plea just before the Yanks came up in the 7th. I'm begging at this point.

8th inning has been a vulnerable area for the Rays. Can't leave it to the 9th against Rodney.

Yankee bullpen ERA around 7 since last Wednesday with an 0-4 record if this score holds. Maybe they got Darnell to mop up.

Rays are so effing lucky that Farnsworth got injured early on and they were able to try Rodney as closer.

That concludes the first half of the season, 49-32, 98 win pace. Pretty incredible/surprising after the 21-21 start, 28-11 since May 21.

Boston will be tough. Their offense thrives in friendly Fenway. A split would be okay, anything more and Boston is at least 10 back in the loss column.
49-32 is excellent.
Cano has become can't-miss viewing. He should be fun to watch in the All-Star HR derby again.
I wonder if Cliff Lee regrets signing with Philly yet.

Arod played hard all day today. He was 2 for 4, with a double, and a walk. He stole a base twice... once called back on umpire inteference. The double was not easy, either.

Good one.

You make the mistake of judging Boston by what it did on the road. Coming home to Fenway, they're a different team. If Boston wins the first game, and that's the key, it could be a tough opponent all weekend. Crazy things happen in Boston sometimes, things you just can't explain, not even with stats.
