Yanks better win this one or they're facing a sweep on the road heading into Boston.

The bullpen is leaking oil. Robertson finally has come back to earth after an otherworldly 2011 season. He got squeezed last night by the ump and never said a word about it afterwards. Boone Logan walked a .211 hitter to set the stage for Tampa's rally. Teixeira's first error of the season sealed the deal.

Joba was in the locker room last night, telling everyone how close he is to returning after throwing 40 pitches in front of Girardi over at the spring training complex earlier in the day. Girardi said he hopes to get him back by August.

This is a team that shrugs off tough losses and comes back to play hard the next night. Always has been. Tonight should be another nut-cutter, just like last night.

Meanwhile, the AL East contenders continue to lose when the Yanks lose. Baltimore got beat by Seattle and remains in a nose-dive. Oakland took care of Boston. The Yanks still lead by six games.

It's Nova vs. Shields tonight. Game is on MLB Network.

Teixeira sitting. He doesn't have great numbers against Shields anyway.

But Big Game James has been awful vs NY this season.

Was watching MLBN earlier. One of their correspondents was blaming Luke Scott's slump on his cerebral approach to the game and his focus on fundamentals. It made me rethink watching the MLB Network going forward.

Dewayne goes deep for a 3-0 lead in the third. A shot to right. What a lift he has been the past week.

3-3 as Rays score 3 times in bottom of third. Nova would have been out of the inning if Martin hadn't thrown high on a stolen base attempt by Elliott Johnson.

That is a tough error call on Martin. You don't see that call often.

Chavez pulls a Bill Buckner as the inning continues. That's two Buckners in two nights for Yankee first baseman.

Well, the scorekeeper has to somehow account for how the hitter advanced to second base. Fielder's choice might have fit the description better.

Martin is not covering himself in glory in his FA year. 4 for his last 48 now and two SBs allowed already tonight, not even counting that tough play/error.

I did not realize that Jennings is considered to have a poor throwing arm. That makes me feel a trifle less miserable about the Crawford signing.

0 for 31! All that high brain function is really getting in the way of his bat. Poor guy.

When it got to 2-0 on Granderson, I figured Shields was pitching around him to get to A-Rod. That is how bad A-Rod is swinging.

By the way, I was listening to the unlistenable John Sterling during a grocery store run and he said A-Rod's stance is so spread out, his front foot is on the front line of the batter's box and his back foot on the back line. Is he on drugs, or am I losing my mind?

It isn't, unless Kevin garnett is at the plate. Sterling has gone off the deep end this season. He has a stroke or three every night and the network keeps sending him out there.

Cano probably should have blocked that, though. Looked like it went under his glove and he was too busy working on his spin move.

Just tried to look up the probable starters for the upcoming series. The Yankees website lists all three games as TBA.

Kuroda - Beckett, Hughes - Morales, Garcia - Doubront?

Philly losing 11-1 to the Mets tonight. Their master plan has gone awry. Halladay out for three months and Cliff Lee winless, not to mention the injuries to Utley and Howard. Down in Philly, they talk about Shane Victorino having ADD which results in things like him getting picked off first base or missing a fly ball in CF because he's not paying attention. Lee jumped on him one time for that earlier this season.

He moves around pretty well behind the plate. The other day, he took such weak hacks at the plate all game that I thot his back was killing him.

I think Elston Howard was the last catcher to hit this poorly in pinstripes. He hit a combined .178 in 315 ABs for the Yankees and Boston in 1967.

Yeah, the Phillies might end up with a historic decline -- going from 100+ wins to 90+ losses (if they continue on their current trajectory).

Martin has reached the point where he's hurting the team at the plate and in the field. That's a deadly combination. Plus, he seems to be pressing at the bat and rushing his throws from behind the plate. Is there any reasonable option out there, any veteran catcher available in a trade? After all, this is July and Cashman is all about fixing his team's weaknesses.

Even Girardi can't be liking what he's seeing. And every-day catchers like Martin tend to get worse as the season goes on. They wear down physically from playing five days a week.

He should have been put on the DL until the break, Stewart and Cervelli could have covered things for a couple of weeks.

Absolutely. They ought to put him on the DL tonight and give him a couple weeks to cure whatever ails him. I'm guessing his back is worse than he lets on. What else could explain his nosedive this season? I know he had been downtrending in LA and missed a lot of time with back problems.
