Britton had a solid start today with 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, and 6 K. It's not perfect, but he's been gradually turning himself back into someone to keep an eye on.
And it was a much better performance than the pitching line. He left without having given up a run, with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, and Aaron Kurcz immediately gave up a 3-run bomb. Based on Run Expectancy, those 2 runs ought to be charged 0.35 to Britton and 1.65 to Kurcz. And Britton also pitched around an error whose average cost in runs was 0.50, so he actually had negative True Runs allowed.

I've never taken mine off. Guys who throw 95 from the left side, with a power breaking ball that wipes out not just the hitters he's facing but the guys in the stands who fantasize about being the hitters he's facing, are not to be given up on lightly. Struggle is good for a lot of guys. Better for him to have it now than to run into it later without knowing how to manage it and push through it.
Or, to put it another way: As bad as Bard is now, can you imagine where he'd be had he not faced this demon before?

Started off BB, PB, BB, WP, allowed the run on an infield out, gave up an infield hit on a comebacker, got out of the inning without further damage. So actually a positive ending after another terrible start.Bard 21p 9s 1 wp

PAWSOX
Game Story
Cody Overbeck drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Lehigh Valley a sweep of the day/night doubleheader against the PawSox. The first place Iron Pigs took it 2-1 after taking the day game, 8-5. Will Inman walked in the winning run to fall to 2-3. The Iron Pigs now have a two game lead over Pawtucket (47-38). The PawSox have lost 13 of their last 15 games.
Lars Anderson singled in the sixth to put the PawSox in front 1-0. The lead disappeared in the bottom of the seventh as Daniel Bards' struggles continued. Bard walked leadoff hitter Pete Orr, who eventually scored the tying run. In one inning, Bard allowed a run on one hit, two walks and a wild pitch. It was Bards' third blown save for Pawtucket.
Billy Buckner pitched extremely well, but didn't figure in the decision. Buckner scattered 3 hits over 6 scoreless innings. He walked a pair while registering 6 strikeouts.
SEADOGS
Game Story
Visiting Trenton wound up with a 6-3 Eastern League baseball victory to end Portland's modest three-game winning streak.
Wet field conditions and the threat of more rain prompted postponement of the second game, resulting in a doubleheader today beginning at 6 p.m.
The Sea Dogs overcame a 3-1 deficit by scoring in the sixth and seventh to force extra innings, then dodged a bullet (back-to-back doubles to open the ninth) before Trenton pushed across three runs in the 11th just as rain began to fall.
After a 25-minute delay, the game resumed and lasted only five minutes longer.
"Our offense was limited, but we scratched and clawed our way back," said Sea Dogs Manager Kevin Boles. "I'm very proud of how they fought back."
Raindrops arrived in the top of the 11th after Trenton loaded the bases with two singles, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk. The Sea Dogs needed a double-play grounder to preserve the tie, and nearly got one.
Zoilo Almonte grounded sharply to Portland second baseman Ryan Dent, but the ball hopped up off Dent's chest and he was only able to get Almonte at first, and just barely.
"We set up for a double play up the middle and pinched in at the corners," Boles said. "Just one of those things. It's a credit to (Dent) to keep that ball in front of him."
That made it 4-3, and David Adams followed with a two-run single that put the game out of reach.
SALEM
Game Story
Jeremy Williams went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a homer and four RBIs as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans laid a 16-3 whooping on the Salem Red Sox on Sunday.
The 13-run losing margin was the largest for the Sox all year.
The Sox didn't lose by more than six runs in the first half of the season, but have now eclipsed that margin three times the past week. They lost to Potomac by nine runs, 13-4, on Saturday and lost to Winston-Salem 8-0 on Monday.
Salem has lost three straight games and eight of 11 to start the second half.
The Pelicans have won eight of 11 to start the half.
Teodoro Martinez and Christian Villanueva each homered and drove in three runs apiece for the Pelicans, who outhit Salem 18-7.
Myrtle Beach battered Salem starter Charle Rosario for seven runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings.
Reliever Manuel Rivera allowed four runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings.
The Pelicans were already up 11-3 when Ryan Pressly came on to pitch the fifth inning.
Pressly struck out the first batter he faced, then allowed the next five batters to reach one homer, two singles, a double and a walk.
Pressly was tagged for five runs in only a third off an inning as the Pelicans added an exclamation point to their already solid winning margin.
DRIVE
Game Story
Charleston scored two runs in the third inning to snap a 1-1 tie, then added two more in the next inning, and the RiverDogs went on to a 5-1 win over the Greenville Drive Sunday at Riley Park.
Jose Garcia gave Greenville an early lead as he led off the game with a single then stole his 15th base of the season. After a ground out to second by Drew Turocy, Garin Cecchini also grounded out to second scoring Garcia.
It was the only out recorded by Cecchini for the game as he and Cody Koback had three hits apiece for the Drive. The rest of Greenville’s lineup combined for just two hits though as the Drive fell to 6-5 in the second half of the South Atlantic League season.
Greenville starter Noe Ramirez (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in two innings to take the loss.
Ben Gamel’s two-run single in the third staked Charleston to a 3-1 lead. The RiverDogs took a 5-1 lead an inning later when Kelvin De Leon and Ali Castillo, the eighth- and ninth-place hitters, had back-to-back RBI-doubles.
De Leon went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, while Castillo went 2-for-3.
SPINNERS
Game Story
The Red Sox repeatedly preach that baseball at this level of the minor leagues is all about the development of young and inexperienced ballplayers. Sometimes, however, it's about resurrection.
It hasn't been easy for anyone to watch 23-year-old righthander Leandro Marin try to pitch for the Lowell Spinners so far this season, especially while they're in a tailspin that has seen them lose eight of their last nine games and fall six games behind Tri-City, the Stedler Division leaders.
In front of another sellout crowd of 5,038 on Sunday at LeLacheur Park, Marin took over in the sixth inning of a tie game.
After striking out the first batter he faced, the next five batters reached base on an error, two walks, and two singles.
The Tri-City ValleyCats scored two runs in the inning to break the 2-2 stalemate and went on to beat the Spinners, 6-3, for their ninth consecutive victory.
Marin was saddled with the loss and fell to 1-2 with a 14.40 ERA. In five appearances, Marin has been tagged for eight hits, eight walks, and 10 runs in five innings while also tossing five wild pitches.
Just two years ago Marin looked like a promising prospect for the Red Sox. He was coming off a 2009 season in which he went 3-2 with a 2.89 ERA at Class A Greenville and fanned 56 batters while allowing just 31 hits in 44 innings. Promoted to advanced Class A Salem for 2010, Marin was off to another good start when he tore a
tendon in his right elbow and needed Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for nearly two full years.
He has begun his comeback in Lowell, and so far his rehab as not progressed as well as everyone had hoped.
"For anyone without Tommy John that's a long time off," said Spinners pitching coach Paul Abbott. "He's still in the early stages. He's probably thinking out there about being too perfect when he doesn't have to be.
