Sabathia going to the DL for a Grade 1 groin strain. Supposedly will miss two starts and return after the ASB.

Silver lining is that it could explain his mediocrity. Still.....not good.

More info: pain in his adductor muscle, felt in his last start, waited till after his bullpen to say anything. Ballplayers are so stupid.

Phelps isn't stretched out again yet, or presumably he'd get the nod.

Saying he did it in the 4th against the Mets, so doesn't explain his mediocre season so far. Oh well.

Mediocrity? 3.45 ERA? His Whip is essentially the same as last season's. Hit rate, K rate and K/BB rate nearly identical as well. A little bit of variance in his results, but...damn. He's still really, really good. You guys are ridiculously spoiled.

He's a fat pitcher. A groin strain is just about the least surprising injury a fat pitcher could suffer.

Yeah, 'mediocre' is definitely too strong, but his OPS allowed is up to .709, which is the highest it's been since 2004. He still hasn't quite been the same since that double rain delay game against SEA last 7/26, more of a #2 or #3 guy than an ace, which I don't think is an unfair criticism for the highest paid pitcher in baseball.

Oh hell yeah I'm spoiled with him. That's a given. But I watch the games and can see past his ERA - he's been shakier than usual. Typically he starts off like that but by now he's normally getting into a groove. Hasn't happened yet.

No way. He's a number one pitcher. Looking around the AL, the only guy with that many IP who's noticably better is Verlander, who might be the best pitcher in all of baseball. Peavy's been good too but who wants to count on him staying healthy? Weaver's only thrown 75 IP, Sale 88.

You guys are nuts.

Yeah, maybe you're right, always harder to see things directly under your nose.

Either way it can't hurt for him to have 20 or so fewer IP at the end of the year, hopefully this doesn't linger too long.

He's an ace, not infallible but a horse who eats up innings and accepts the role of leading the staff. I agree with Jon. It never hurts for any of your main starters to get a break in the middle of the summer, especially when the team is in first place.
It would be just the Yankees' luck to have Freddy pitch well and remain in the rotation until CC comes back. Freddy has looked okay in relief and his FB was up around 90 and 91 a few times. That's probably 5 miles faster than his norm back in April. Working in the bullpen also seemed to improve Freddy's curveball, which was too often 58 feet in April.

CC to the DL again. This time, he goes on it for left elbow soreness. Link to Mark Feinsand.

Maybe this is why Girardi pulled him so quickly on Wednesday night after 94 pitches. Good to be proactive about this stuff.

I wonder if this means Warren will be up for CC's spot? Apparently the word is Phelps isn't stretched out now, so I would guess he's not an option.

Always cringe when elbow soreness is talked about. Look at Pineda. Clean MRI, yet contrast MRI later showed something.

Guess it's time for the young arm(s) to step up and carry the load. Maybe that will be a good thing.

"CC Sabathia is going on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his left elbow. The injury first popped up after last week’s start against the Mariners, and an MRI showed no structural problem.
“As for our concern, it’s pretty low-level,” Joe Girardi said.
Sabathia had his left arm iced before today’s game, which is not overly unusual for a pitcher. Girardi said pregame that it was a non-issue — “preventative stuff,” he said — and Girardi defended that comment postgame, saying the Yankees really were trying to prevent Sabathia from missing Monday’s scheduled start. The decision to DL him wasn’t made until after today’s game, when Sabathia fought the decision, saying he was healthy enough to pitch Monday.
Two days after Sabathia’s August 3 start at home, he felt some elbow soreness and went for an MRI, which came back clean. That elbow pain is part of the reason Girardi held Sabathia to less than 100 pitches in Detroit, but Sabathia again felt some soreness after that start. Girardi said the Yankees considered having Sabathia simply skip a start without going on the disabled list, but they ultimately decided to take this route.
No more tests are scheduled."

CC says he will definitely pitch when eligible on Aug. 24 @ Cle. "That's the day I'm pitching."
