i think Navas is a risky sub there for del bosque, Silva has done a very good job of tracking back on ronaldo, Navas must make sure he does the same

Ronaldo is now playing on the right.

ETA: Sorry, CR plays wherever CR damn well pleases. he's floating in the middle and playing higher up that Almeda at the moment.

Biscuits should get a first yellow for just walking on the pitch, it would make every game more interesting and satisfying

And why, when Xabi Alonso gets fouled, does the man take a legitimate SHOT to his body? The DeJong cleating, the Pepe kidney shot...

His last year with Liverpool, 4 or 5 opponents got straight red cards for fouling him. For some reason, opponents seem to go after him violently.

in 10 years, we'll rue that Portugal was never able to produce a striker to play with Ronaldo

zzzzzzzz

you know the game is a disappointment when the best passer in the world takes a 20 meter SOG on a counter attack.

You haven't been enjoying this? Second half has slowed a bit, but really?

He's the striker. Pull Almeda, put on Varela, move Nani to the left and let those two try and set up CR. The brilliance of CR's passing is wasted with Almeda. With RM, he's got Higuain or Benzema...with country, he's got stiffs who can't finish.

it's probably got to be a free kick or corner for Portugal, may as well be this one

Moutinho & Veloso have been tremendous today. Stifling the tiki-taka is not something anyone's been able to do effectively for an entire game and they are doing it.

yes, i've been very impressed with moutinho, one of his better games for sure

as far as ronaldo as a striker, they've tried it at times and it hasn't really worked, but it's not an awful idea or anything, just probably not the solution

I was really looking forward to this game, and it really hasn't been that great.

I sort of hope it goes into extra time and someone scores in the first minute -- maybe we'll get 29 minutes of good football that way.

Also, doesn't it seem like guys are repeatedly drilling the balls into defenders -- not like because they are sticking out legs or something, but right at them.

Some very uncharacteristic mistakes by Spain today. 99% of the time they find the right pass, but they've been off today. Portugal's pressure undoubtedly a factor.

Portugal had a lot of success in the 1st half with Coentrao going forward and playing off Ronaldo, i have no idea why they've gone away from it so much this half.

Navas. Even if there is no one to cross the ball to, Coentrao has to play him closer than Silva, who was tucked inside more.

69 goals in the first 27 games of the tournament, and not a single scoreless draw. Now, we've had two in a row.

I know that performances from one game in a tournament don't always carry over, but watching this game, it's hard to imagine Germany getting much in the way of resistence on the road to the trophy.

well Portugal already played Germany reasonably tough once and Spain can obviously play with them so i'm not sure your observation makes much sense

No two teams in the tournament know each other as well as these two because of the clubs (RM & Barca) involved. This is a stripped down Classico, minus the Messi & Higuain.

ETA: Yeah, it's great that Pedro & Navas are now creating space and chances from the wings...but no striker means no one to center the ball to. Free Llorente!

Portugal's midfield looks out of gas. If Spain were playing someone taller than 5', this would be over - Navas & Pedro have owned this game since coming on.

Custodio on for Veloso.

Wasn't that clearly a back pass? He wasn't trying to clear it, nor was he trying to play it. He was pushing it back to his keeper.

  • 2,221 posts

i think you can say he's trying to control it and the keeper grabs it, it really wasln't a back pass and it'd be incredibly shitty to award a penalty there for that
