Folks, I want to make sure we keep an eye on the big picture here. Yes, this is about a truck. But it's about more than that. It's about making sure the people of Tanzania get the kind of lives we in America have had, have loved, and have lost. Let me give you an example.

On May 16, 1919, a woman named Frances Zuchowska gave birth to a baby boy named Wladziu in West Allis, Wisconsin. His twin died. He was born with a caul, which in many cultures is considered a sign of future genius. Well, this boy sure proved that theory true! (Note to ed: FU and your SSS crap) By the time he was four, Wladziu showed a remarkable predilection for piano. By his early 30s, he was one of the biggest musical stars in the country. He delighted millions of fans around the world with his virtuosic gifts, and eventually became one of the biggest stars in Las Vegas. Sometime in his early 60s, however, Wladziu contracted HIV, and by the mid-80s, was suffering from full-blown AIDS. He died in 1987, a full life realized, but taken too soon.

The tragedy of AIDS in Africa is that their musical geniuses are often taken before they even grow up. According to UNICEF, there were about 350,000 new HIV infections among children in sub-Saharan Africa in 2010. Almost all of these infections are preventable, as are the deaths of the approximately 5% of HIV/AIDS sufferers every year in sub-Saharan Africa.

America has had its Liberace. By helping out here, YOU help Tanzania prevent HIV/AIDS from affecting its future Liberaces. Isn't that enough to make you sign up?

Posted Image

Where is their Liberace? Not dead...only if you help.

So after day 2, we're up to $4,065. The pace is slacking gang.

We need to juice this up if we're going to hit our targets. If you have any great auction items, put 'em in the auction forum. Heck, if youhave any mediocre auction items, put em in the thread.

I'll try to do my part. If we get two people to make $500 donations in the next day. I'll throw in another $500.... I really care... about Carlos Quintana.

For those of you who know me, you know that dropping this kind of coin is not something that I can do lightly, but I'm in because its worth it. I've been out to SIC and other rough parts of Africa and it's unbelievable what you can do with $500, $200, even $25 dollars. If you give even $1,000 to most US charities, it's almost nothing. No matter how efficient, focused and organized they are, you just can't do that much with it. America is expensive.

That's among the reasons I love getting involved in Africa with a small contribution you can do an incredible amount of good.

This project will literally save lives. People will literally not die because of the services they get from SIC. Think about it. We can do that. Us. A bunch of baseball fans.

So let's keep fighting and kick it up a couple of notches. Thanks to all who have given already, and thanks in advance to those who are going to give.

Your pal,

Jose

Just to give you a picture of what our current trucks go through to make our work possible...
Posted Image

The guy on the left is one of our drivers and the other three are Tanzanian volunteers. We get these really amazing college students and give them a small stipend to live in a village for about 6 weeks, teaching HIV classes in the school, conducting HIV education with adults, and organizing testing days. They are like rockstars in the village--they're from the city, they're totally dynamic and creative educators, they have nice hair and nice jeans--and everyone wants to hear what they have to say. I mean, check out the poses. They learn a lot in the village too; many of them have never lived in areas with no water, or in a house with no electricity. Fortunately, they're not afraid to get dirty!

Here they are planning community education:
Posted Image

And bringing people to the HIV testing tent:
Posted Image

These volunteers have gone on to become teachers, community development officers in the government, school principals, and in one case, the youngest ever member of Parliament. We love to get them into the village, as part of their leadership development, and we need the trucks to do it.

This is one of the many reasons why I am proud to be a part of this community. Great job Jose and Nenda Soxsi!

My donation is modest but I would nominate the photograph of Pedro from behind home plate while he is rearing up to throw. It was from SI. I couldn't find it on the innernets, but I have a copy from a friend who used to work there. I would scan it just to show it because it would be so sick on the hood: Pedro staring down HIV/AIDS and about to drill it in the ass. (Poor choice of words?)

So here's where we stand after three days
Posted Image

That's $5,470 in paid cash money US greenback dollars.

If the fundaiser ended today, the left side would be decorated by Nip and the right side by RoosterCrows.

The nominations for what to show on the front or back would include:
1. Pedro tossing the Gerbil to the Ground
2. Tek giving Slappy McBluelips a glove sandwich
3. Carlos Quintana
4. Pedro Striking out Jeter
5. Pedro taking a sign from Tek
6. Tek lifts A-Rod "by the onions"
7. Freddy Lynn
8. Foulke after recording the final out on October 27, 2004
9. He was safe by like a foot
10. Manny homers against the Angels, celebrates
11. Pedro from behind homeplate

By my reckoning we also have quite a bit of money in auction bids. I count $2800 in bids made so far.

That brings us to a total $8,270 or 13,011,137 Tanzania Shillings (which may be worth more than Curt Schillings these days).

That some serious money... but it's not what you'd call "truck" money... not yet.

So keep donating, keep bidding, keep telling your friends, keep submitting auction items and keep bugging Red Sox employees you may no personally to push those guys to chip in.

Nenda Soksi!!!!

We do it in a tent!

Reaching the most remote areas means we have to be able to set up HIV testing days even if there are no buildings around. Our tents were custom made for us in Tanzania out of heavy canvas with metal poles.

Posted Image

We pack our boxes with test kits, gloves, syringes, register books, results slips, sharps boxes, etc, carry a few plastic tables and chairs, and then we're ready to test basically anywhere where we can get people to show up.

Posted Image

Testing costs about $2 per person, it takes about 30 minutes with pre- and post-counselling, and it changes lives. People who test negative get the information they need to stay negative. People who test positive can get the medications they need to stay healthy. Everybody should have access, no matter where they live.

You may have come to this site wanting to read about the after-effects of the Youkilis trade, the pending return of [insert latest injured outfielder here] from the DL, or to predict what Papi will do in the All Star Game. Or maybe just to parse the opinions of some semi-informed fellow amateurs on the Affordable Care Act ruling.

But as SoSH, you've taken on this amazing cause of fighting HIV in Tanzania. This has been absolutely incredible, and so completely inspiring for us to see the creativity and dedication of the SoSH community. The donations have been pouring in from the minute Jose posted his Keys to the Truck. From RedKluzu's publishing workshop to Allented Mr. Ripley's Pedro art to the rock stars who put up tickets for Bruce, Pats, and Sox-Yankees, the auction items have been so incredibly generous. We wish we could try OrangeJulia's cookies, or watch KenTremendous' show get made. We're on the fence about whether drinking with TomRicardo is ever a good idea, even if it also fights AIDS.

Mad props to Nip and Jose along with LTF, CaptainLaddie and absintheofmalaise for making this happen. Thanks to evereyone who's donated, put items for auction, posted to their facebook page or contacted media outlets. We're not there yet, but we know you'll make it!

Baseball people love stats, and SIC loves STATS. So here are some stats that show what you as SoSH are up against in Tanzania:

- 84% of women and 77% of men have primary education or less. Most of them get their money from back-breaking manual agriculture and a third of all Tanzanians are below the poverty line.

- 1.4 million people, or 5.6% of the adult population, are currently living with HIV.

- 58% of people who have HIV and need antiretroviral treatment don't have access to it. 86,000 people die from HIV-related illnesses every year.

But it's not hopeless. In fact, things are getting better. The country didn't even have any antiretrovirals until 2005--but literally hundreds of thousands of people are alive today on treatment who would be dead. And the trend in new HIV infections is finally declining, from a high of 180,000 a year in 1992 to 100,000 in 2010.

There's still a long way to go. But we feel hopeful. Thanks for inspiring us! Can't wait for our new truck!

The XIXth International AIDS Conference is underway in DC this week, and SIC won a scholarship to be there. Conference is kind of an understatement, we prefer to think of it as the Superbowl of AIDS. The conference draws 30 – 40,000 people from around the world and it’s basically a boisterous semi-organized chaos of top notch researchers, yelling activists, strutting drag queens, corporate schills, public health heroes, students, philanthropists, volunteers, hacks, both Clintons, and community-based implementers like us. They pack sessions from 7 in the morning until 9 at night every day.

We have a presentation on Wednesday, and a table where volunteers will be selling our Tuko Pamoja Bags. The conference is also a great opportunity for us to learn what’s new in research and program implementation, meet donors and other potential supporters, and talk with people who share challenges similar to ours. We leave with new ideas, new friends, and new energy. It rules.
