Only on SOSH would people seriously contemplate sending down the kid who was just named American League player of the week, so we could hang onto and start a guy who is hitting .233/.315/377 because he didn't want to come off the bench.

It's worse than that. People are ok with trading Youks, it's that Thornton, Sale and Konerko are not coming this way with full freight paid.

Konerko would have nowhere to play and Sale isn't as good as Felix Doubront when you adjust for karma.

You'd think they would at least learn how to spell his name in Chicago

A few people have brought up the $1 million point. If the Red Sox are scrambling around for $1 million then I don't even know what to say other than the rest of the roster planning is also horrific.

$1 million is chump change in the context of a $173M payroll, but it increases their distance from the luxury tax threshold by 20%. That should provide a lot more flexibility when other teams are also playing around that number (edit: OK, only the Phillies, but it helps there). It also broadens the number of players they could bring in at the deadline without recording an over-the-cap year.

The Red Sox didnt save any money under the luxury cap by trading Youklilis, as his AAV was below his salary, so by taking on Lillibridge, they actually increased their luxury cap number by a few hundred grand.

Ooh, good point.

You have this all in your own spreadsheet, don't you?

Do they avoid a tax hit in 2013 for the option buyout, or is the buyout already factored into the AAV?

Where are you getting your numbers? The last estimate I saw had the Sox about $8 million over the cap (using AAV of contracts and adding about $12-13 million for benefits, insurance, and bonuses, both of which are how the luxury tax limit does it).
