It's a hard cap with lots of exceptions. You can only spend up to $55 million or so. But you can go over that to sign your own players, but there are max salaries you can't go above. After you get above like $75 million you pay luxury tax.Is the salary cap in the NBA a hard cap, or can you pay as much as you want, just with heavy luxury tax consequences once you hit it? Could this guy just throw out 200 million a year with 5 max contract players?

And if you go over the cap you get handcuffed by several restrictions on adding new FAs and making trades.

Just heard Peter Vecsey is saying the Hawks are stripping down to sell and move to St. Louis.
Josh Smith is the easy test for this. He is from Atlanta, is due $12M and has a good amount of value to other teams. If they are fire selling to get to STL, they will trade him and be left with only Horford and Teague as obligations.
I think it is more likely that they are trying to build a base of Smith, CP3 (free agent next year) and Howard (traded for Horford and Teague).
John Hollinger throws out this theory here: http://insider.espn....e-momentous-day

What's strange is I live in STL and the NBA hasn't come up in years...since the failed Grizzlies heist in 2000. KC has an empty arena sitting there and would seem more logical.
Not to mention Seattle, who is building an arena and has had contact with the league about how to proceed in terms of bringing a team back.

I grew up on Peter Vecsey and bought the Post for years almost solely to read his column, but dude is unfortunately even more incoherent than Gammons at this point. I wouldn't put much stake in anything he said, I'd wait for one of the younger guys to report it first.

Nobody will be calling this smart when the Raptors are paying 21 million dollars for a back court consisting of a 41 year old Steve Nash and Landry Fields 3 years from now.
I agree. I'm not saying its the right move, but the Raptors are clearly all in on Nash. He is their primary target, and theynjust went a long way in making it a one horse race. Probably an overpay, but it makes it much more likely they get their guy.

Is 3 years 18.5M really all that big of an overpay though? Sure 8.5M in the last year is high, but it counts as 6 against the cap, not a terrible move to get a young player who still has potential, and make it much more difficult for your primary rival to put together a trade for Nash.I agree. He shot 25% from 3 last year, 56% from the free throw line, and generally looked lost once they stopped running the D'Antoni offense. I actually think that in the right system Fields can be a decent rotation guy, and with Nash in the fold, Toronto may run that system, but you're paying him starter money to lure a 39 year old free agent. They're a fringe playoff team with Nash--and that's if he's able to stay healthy without Phoenix's wizard training staff--so I guess I just don't see what the upside is for Toronto.

Eric Gordon and the Phoenix Suns agree to a Maximum Offer sheet worth $58 million over 4 years, sources said.

We'll see if New Orleans matches this. I'd have to expect they will.
Broussard also goes on to tweet this......
Gordon told me his desire is to play in Phoenix, not New Orleans.

How bad are the other players?Hibbert and Gordon both getting max deals. If those guys were on the same team and were the two best players does that team even make the playoffs?

Clippers signed Jamal Crawford and Chauncey Billups and also cancelled their visit with Ray Allen. Looks like its down to the Heat and C's for Ray Ray.
How much cheaper does Crawford have to be than Ray Allen? And why the hell wouldn't the Clippers rather have Mayo than any of the three?

So Houston is trying to sign Aaron Brooks, who they got from the Suns for Goran Dragic, who just left Houston to go back to Phoenix. And Dork Elvis does it again, at least he only lost a 1st rounder out of the affair.
Houston sent Brooks to Phoenix for Dragic and a first rounder, so Morey got a first rounder out of it.

He got the better PG on low salary, and a first, then he let him go when he became overpriced and got back his original guy likely for less money. That's a great move.So Houston is trying to sign Aaron Brooks, who they got from the Suns for Goran Dragic, who just left Houston to go back to Phoenix. Guess it just goes down on Sarvar's record as another draft blunder.

Too bad the Celtics are not under the cap. Dallas or some team like that will probably get Brand for <$3m next year...And the 76ers have opted to amnesty Elton Brand.

Given this, it's only a matter of time before the Magic trade Dwight, right? Unless they feel like they can lure a free agent/trade for an all-star to play alongside him. With the T-Wolves and Clippers getting their acts together, the Magic might be in the running for most inept front office in the league.

I think the new front office is fine, they got stuck with a terrible roster and a star who had no interest in being there. This deal was nice for them, Paying Anderson that much made no sense, so instead of just letting him go for nothing they got a decent cheap big man.Anderson to Hornets in a sign-and-trade.

Has New Orleans confirmed that they are going to match the offer for Gordon?Anderson, Davis, Rivers and Gordon plus whoever is playing point guard (Jarrett Jack?) and Aminu is a solid base for the future.
I know the Pacers announced that they will match Portland's offer for Hibbert, but haven't seen that type of report on Gordon...

Looks like Rashard Lewis is about to sign with the Heat.
And Lou Williams to the Hawks.
Lewis is awaiting a physical being conducted by a Miami coroner.
