Shortstop.

Voting:
Please vote for 5 to 8 players. The top 5 vote-receivers are accepted.

After all the positions are in, the top vote-getters not previously selected will be accepted, with no more than 10 per position, until 57 players are selected.

Once a player is selected for one position, he cannot be selected for another position.

If there is a tie for fifth, the player with more nominations will be selected

More info on the methodology here

Baseball Reference positional history here

Monday 5pm ET.

Eight players were nominated, under the poll choice limit of 20, so all players nominated are in the poll.
This is the first poll with under ten nominees, so if you want you can vote for them all.

Rico Petrocelli ends up playing out of position. But we've seen quite a bit of that this season.

Petrocelli played 774 career games at SS, and 727 career games at 3B. It's basically a coin flip, and not anywhere close to the travesty of Yaz at 1B.

Although, SS is such a horribly weak field that it might be handy to have saved him for this position, but oh well.

Rico came up as a SS, was the SS in 1967. I'll always think of him as a SS.

This is pretty easy:

1. Nomar
2. Valentin
3. Pesky
4. Burleson
5. Bressoud

You could flip Valentin and Pesky if you want--I think Valentin was a shade better, but then I never saw Pesky play. Burleson is possibly the most overrated player in Sox history, but still obviously no worse than 4th in this group. Bressoud was not the best player of the rest, but arguably had the best Sox stint.

Ture enough (especially the Yaz point) - but in the hearts of most of the old guys here, I bet Rico is thought of first as a SS. As AZ notes, he came up in that position, played it in 1967 (including making the final out of the season) and, while he played some terrific 3rd base, had his best all around year (I think) in 1969, when he led the AL at SS in fielding percentage (at least I think he did) and hit 40 HRs (that one I know).

Having written that, somehow we shall carry on.

The man on the right is he of the "fine young arm" according to WHDH color man extraordinaire, Johnny Pesky. Note the eerie resemblence to my avatar.

Yep. For the most part he was memorably awful.

Maybe he'll feel better after he checks his savings account. I certainly hope so.

This team has a fatal flaw at the shortstop position.
