Not playing thread police here, but I feel this is new thread worthy and wholly separate from the remaining WWDC stuff:

Put iOS 6 on my iPhone. Seems to run fine so far, other than the fact that trying to search for anything in Maps makes it crash as soon as I type in the first letter. Simple enough to just use Siri to ask for directions though (or to find whatever).

Care to post other findings? I had a dev account that expired, though I may pass my UDID onto a friend. I know there were issues regarding the betas last year and unlocked phones, and I am going to Russia next month and need to be able to unlock my phone and not run into issues.

Please do post your findings here. I am probably going to wait out beta 1 and upgrade mid-July when I get back from vacation.

I will say I'm surprised that the 3GS not only made it past the first couple of builds of iOS 5, but is being supported for at least another 6 months to a year (as it is part of iOS 6). For all the grousing over the 4 not getting Siri, the fact that they are supporting phones well past a typical contract life (for early adopters, at least) is pretty cool, even if you are only getting ~85% of the functionality.

My 3GS has slowed considerably with iOS5. At times the sluggishness becomes pretty unbearable, TBH.

So far, everything else seems to be working fine. MLB At-bat is working, which is what I was scared of breaking (it was broken for several builds of iOS 5 last year). I've played with the new Siri functions a bit, and turn by turn seems to work right if I use Siri to set it up. Phone seems as responsive as ever. Battery doesn't seem to be getting chewed up at a crazy rate, but obviously it's early to be making any definitive statements there.

Really? I had no issues with iOS5 on the 3GS before getting my 4S, and I passed it along to my fiancée and she hasn't really had any complaints. Have you tried hard-resetting the phone (by holding home and sleep buttons till it turns off)?

I'm either too dense to figure out how to use it, or Passbook doesn't actually function yet.

Safari seems significantly faster.

I'm guessing Passbook won't be enabled until release, like Newsstand, last year.

I'm pretty cool with the changes, even if they're mostly not mind-blowing (which is fine, they don't have to be). However, based on the screenshots, the one issue I am having right now is the UI inconsistencies. The Music app gets redone in silver (and the player now looks somewhat Android-ish), while the Camera app is flipped around in black. The App Store is also redone in black, while other apps retain the blue/grey theme. I'm cool with tweaks, but there seems to be way less UI consistency than I ever remember, which seems un-Apple like. Hopefully it gets cleared up before final release.

Yeah, I threw it on last night and passbook seems to do nothing.

Maps works ok for me and it's very well done. Going to try out navigation.

One thing that nobody has posted on the tech blogs is that I think Apple is planning an overhaul of UIKit for the next iphone. There's a lot of dark grey gradient inclusion where blue used to be. This was rumored before this event, but I think it is real.

Thanks Teddy, sent the PM. I gave the UDID to a friend last night to register and apple locked his account due to a server error (as per them). So, my phone is stuck with the beta installed but unactivated.

Apple gave Google the FU with this update, more searching with Siri and the dropping of Google maps. They are trying to hit them in the pocket book. What's next, Bing becomes the default search engine in Safari?

Try:

Connect your phone to your computer and shut it off
Put your phone into DFU mode by holding power and home together for 10 seconds, then release the power button and continue holding home until your computer recognizes the device
In iTunes: For Mac, hold alt/option and click restore / For PC, shift and restore
Let it restore

Honestly, it's buggy and probably not worth it for most people. I just had a phone call drop audio for a minute and change then resume. Passbook has no functionality. It's basically a preview of maps and a much improved app store (no more kicking you out of the store when you update! yay!). I'm a dev so I'll run it and mess with some of the new APIs, but you'll be happier waiting at least for a few more beta builds

Some good videos on iOS 6 from some site called iDownloadBlog:

Siri

Maps

App Store

Safari

iPad Clock App

The changes to the App Store are really good.

By the way, I'm curious: how deep can Siri go with sports statistics? In the demo, Scott Forstall asked what Buster Posey's batting average is. While I don't expect Siri to get too in-depth, could it also do things like OBP, OPS, etc.? I'd imagine so, given the information is probably coming from a place like ESPN or wherever.

Right now, it only seems equipped with the current season for stats. However, it's answering sporadic questions from years in the past. I asked it how many homeruns Grady Sizemore had last year and it gave me the spring training scores from 2011. Clearly, they're still working out the kinks but that points to the data being somewhere for Siri to pull from.

If you guys want screenshots, I can take them but I'm sure you've all seen Siri.

It fixed itself. Apparently, the friend who had his account was frozen by apple had the 5 UDIDs on his account also frozen. Apple was slow in fixing it but didn't allow the UDIDs out of limbo until around 1pm. All is well now. Thanks for the help.

So I put iOS 6 on my iPhone first, and tested to make sure the apps I mainly use work, including playing MLB.tv video. So when it all worked, I decided to update my iPad as well. But apparently the MLB.tv video locks up after every half inning in AtBat on the iPad right now. Bleh.

Here's a question: is worldwide local search for Siri up and running? Can you ask for restaurants and stuff, in non-US cities?

I used Yelp a lot on my US trip, I'm thrilled at the idea of being able to use it here in Brazil. I mean, one assumes Yelp goes full-on worldwide now, right?

This is incredibly stable compared to some of the iOS5 builds last year.

The restore/update was the most seamless I've ever had. Normally I end up having to make some tweaks, change some ringtones, etc. This managed to be spot on right away.

"Do Not Disturb" is useless to me in its current form. My favorites aren't my favorites, they're the people I need to call most often. I don't necessarily want them to have the open door when Do Not Disturb is on.

The new maps are awesome, but there's some funkiness going on. The max zoom levels are inconsistent (even for the same area).

The new privacy controls are long overdo and very nicely implemented.

I've had a few random app crashes, but nothing significant. Everything seems to work (again, unlike iOS5's betas).

More to follow, I'm sure.

You can change whose calls are allowed through Do Not Disturb. You can set it to any group in your contacts, to favorites, or to no one.

The settings for it are within the notifications settings.

Correct on the stability, except that my wifi only iPad is currently experiencing no wifi symptoms. The iPhone version is so stable though that I wouldn't be surprised if we only get 4 or 5 builds.

I googled about my iPad problem (it connects to wifi but does not allow any internet connections) and it seems that I'm not the only person experiencing that. Oh well.

So it seems like Apple fucked up the model identifiers on the 4G iPad3 models for the updates: the Verizon.dmg file has the iPad3,2 ipsw file and the ATT.dmg file has the iPad3,3 ipsw file. Not sure if it's just a naming fuckup or what, but it also railroaded me into loading the 3,2 version of 5.1.1 on my Verizon iPad when downgrading it back to iOS 5 (I decided to downgrade it for now since MLB.tv streaming wasn't working and that's one of my main uses of the iPad). It doesn't seem to have caused any issues though. I'm still able to connect to both LTE and 3G verizon cell data, even though I believe my iPad currently has the AT&T firmware installed.

Apparently in iOS 6, iTunes Match now supports both streaming and downloading music.

Except right now they don't allow you to download individual songs with iTunes match, only whole albums/artists. It's really shitty and annoying because I had to resync hundreds of songs by downloading whole albums and deleting the songs later on.

Beta, sorry. In beta they don't let you download any song by itself. You have to click download all, otherwise the song just streams when you click it. It's clearly a beta glitch because if that's permanent, I'm getting rid of match.

Yeah I imagine it's a beta glitch. Now that I think about it though, how would they manage a one-click to determine between streaming and downloading an individual song? I'm guessing streaming will go away for final release again.

For those using iTunes Match, has iOS 6 improved the overall performance of it? While it's generally worked great between Macs, I've had a less than stellar experience on my iPhone. The Music app itself became more sluggish and everything just seemed slower. Additionally, and this applies on both iOS and Mac, I've had issues with album artwork. Whenever I update the album artwork, more times than not, it will eventually revert back to the original, which is a pain in the ass.

However, my biggest issue has been sorting. I sort my albums by chronological order and iTunes Match generally adheres to that, except on albums that begin with words like "the" or "A". So take, for instance, The Beatles. It will sort their albums in the order of release date, but on albums such as "A Hard Day's Night" or "The Beatles" (White Album), it will alphabetize them at the top. It also does this with albums that have quotations marks, such as David Bowie's "Heroes". If they fixed this issue alone, I would be thrilled, as it's maddening to have such inconsistent ordering.

I'm guessing he just pulled up any album as an example, or he wasn't watching the Wizard of Oz.

I really don't know what is wrong with my settings on iOS 5, as iTunes Match never worked for me (among other things). I'm in too deep (meaning a work email profile that they'd have to reinstall, etc.) to just start from scratch on my phone, so hopefully that problem will just go away for me in iOS 6. I was ambivalent about Match without an option to stream. Just because I want to play a song once doesn't mean I want to download it.

No, music wouldn't play at all. I'd go to play a song and it would get stuck on a song, quickly shuffle through everything until it found a track and then got stuck, or it would play two songs and then not play music anymore. I had to shut off Match and just sync tracks with iTunes.

I think there's something just fucked about my settings, since the Apple Store just swapped out a phone for me and nothing really changed. If there was a way to save all your app folders and do a clean wipe and be able to just restore your folders, I'd do that in a second, but between reorganizing the apps/folders and getting IT to update my phone for security settings for email, I've just had to deal with it instead of wiping and going through that pain..

Ironically, this happened to me with iOS 6 at first. Delete the songs that aren't playing (even if it's all of them because it was about half for me) and then add them again through match. I added a couple albums that would not play at all. It would skip right to the next song (or shuffle through other songs if they also weren't playable).

Yeah, I had the original Droid and that was probably the worst feature. You can't just update contacts that are already in your contacts list? I don't want 2/3 of my FB friends in my phone since FB exists so you don't have to call most of these people.
