This is really beginning to get tense. Italy being put under pressure and Croatia one goal away from putting Spain out.

Eduardo has come to save us from the awful Spanish.

So, as long as Italy leads only 1-0, a goal by Spain really doesn't affect Croatia, right? They advance either with a 1-0 win or a 1-1 draw. Really should be pushing as much as possible for that goal.

edit: and with that, spain and italy both score, making this moot.

Mata cant get a minute of action due to the need to bring on Navas to pointlessly run down the right flank and create nothing

Navas pointlessly runs down the right and into the penalty area where he taps in from a pass by Iniesta.

Ever thought of being a manager?

Tap-ins are definitely the sign of a players worth, Mata doesn't have the sill to score that goal I stand corrected

Apparently you're allowed to judo throw someone in the box on a corner if you're Spanish

For 15 teams, the world feed producers show beautiful women with their faces painted, but for Croatia all they ever show is dudes.

Croatia has some hotties. Are they not allowed to travel?

Leonardo Bonnucci with the headlock and the hand over the mouth in an effort to reign in Balotelli following his goal. I wonder what the sweet nothings were that he whispered into his ear. I think Mancini should take this approach next season when Mario gets too demonstrative on the pitch.

I can't believe Balotelli played over two hours on a yellow and didn't get a second.

Sucks that Croatia are gone. Positive, organized attacking style. Modric and Jelavic are fun to watch.

Could someone more knowledgeable than I (a low standard) explain why Spain's goal wasn't an offsides? From the looks of the replay (see around 1:45), I thought Navas was past the last defender as the ball was passed to Iniesta.

edit: sorry, Navas. Right.

He's offside when the ball is passed to Iniesta, but is onside when Iniesta passes it back to him as he's behind the ball at that point.

I think you're referring to Navas, who was indeed in an offside position when Xavi played the ball to Iniesta, who was onside. However, at that point Navas was not "interfering with play" (he did not touch the ball) and he did not "gain an advantage from being in an offside position" in that he did not play the ball after it had rebounded off anyone. By the time Iniesta played the ball to Navas, Navas was behind the ball and no longer in an offside position.

Cool. So basically, they skirted right along the knife-edge of the rules, but stayed on the right side. All because they had two forwards get behind the defense, but only one was actually offsides. Pretty slick.

At the time, I was yelling at my monitor at work "wait, that's offsides! that's why all the defenders and goalie stopped!". Guess they were just begging for (expecting?) a call.

Ireland's -8 goal differential is tied for the worst ever in the Euros. Yugoslavia (1980), Denmark (2000), and Bulgaria (2004) did equally as poor. This is since the tournament started featuring a group stage in 1980.

Denmark didn't muster a single goal, so at least the Irish avoided the distinction of being the "worst Euros entrant ever."

Another quick note--it's not the "last defender" that brings about the offside, it's actually the second to last defender, however this includes the keeper. There was a play in the World Cup where the keeper had come out to punch the ball away and when the ball was played back in there was one defender on the goal line and that made the offensive player the ball was played to offside as the keeper had not yet recovered.

A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent

I'm a huge fan of Spain--my wife is Spanish--but I am terribly frustrated with the team.

First of all, I really don't like Busquets, even though Del Bosque heaps all sort of praise on him. He committed a blatant foul today that should have been called. He is a dirty player.

Second, I am not enjoying this double pivot system. I think Del Bosque is going with his boys, which is certainly fine because they win as a team, but I would like to see more time for some combination of Mata, Llorente, and Cazorla.

And I know Torres scored two goals against Ireland, but, come on, it was Ireland. I still doubt his play at his current form.
