I can count on one finger the number of times a pitcher who lost 5 mph off his fastball and attributed it to mechanics instead of an injury actually had mechanical problems and not injury problems. Shut him down and MRI his shoulder and elbow.

Daniel Bard is not the same pitcher he was when he worked at McCoy Stadium three years ago. The question is whether that is good or bad.
Bard made his return to Pawtucket Friday night after being demoted from Boston because of wildness. He threw only one inning, as planned, but it was enough to indicate pretty clearly that he is not throwing now the way he was on the way up to the big leagues in 2009.
The tall right-hander started the 2009 season with the PawSox, but needed less than two months to prove he was ready for the majors. He appeared in 11 games, worked 16 innings and allowed only two runs for an ERA of 1.13. He yielded only six hits and five walks while striking out 29 before he was promoted to Boston and quickly became one of the top set-up men in the game.
He allowed more runs in his one inning Friday than he did in all of his 2009 work with the PawSox.
Bard got himself in trouble the same way he did in Boston, when he hit two batters in his last start in Toronto. He hit two batters again Friday against Indianapolis — two of the first three hitters he faced. He clunked Chase d’Arnaud, the Indianapolis leadoff batter, in the leg with a 95 mph fastball on his second pitch. Gorkys Hernandez, the second Indians batter, blooped a single to right. Then, Bard’s first pitch to Starling Marte, the number three hitter, hit Marte on the wrist with a 94 mph fastball.
Indianapolis scored three runs before the inning was over, the first on a fielder’s choice and the last two on a two-strike, opposite-field double to the fence in left by Jeff Larish.
Bard needed 25 pitches to get out of the inning, 16 strikes. He had a high on the radar gun of 96, that on his first pitch, a called strike to d’Arnaud.
His status with the team is unsettled. Boston manager Bobby Valentine said he will maintain communication with Bard through organization officials.
“I’ll go by other people’s eyes, ears and I’ll try to stay in communication. But the one thing from spring training, from the winter time, that I heard with Daniel is that we didn’t want too many voices. We didn’t want there to be confusion. In our last talk, we tried to narrow it down to who it is that he’d be working with,” Valentine said.
Bard has spoken about how he might have tried to change too many parts of his motion because he was moving from the bullpen into a starting role.
“The intentions were good from everybody, including every coach I talked to and myself,” he said. “We came into spring training and said, ‘How do we need to change everything I do to fit the starting role?’ I don’t think we needed to change as much as we thought we did. We tweaked a lot of things mechanically trying to simplify me, trying to get the best windup that I’m comfortable with. We probably did a little too much. You can’t pitch and think at the same time. I think that’s the key to it.”

With two runners on and two outs in the seventh inning, Jeremy Hazelbaker quickly fell behind 0-2 in the count.
He fouled the third pitch. Same with the fourth.
The fifth was the charm. The left-handed Hazelbaker turned on a change-up and launched it into the video board, high above the right center-field fence. His three-run blast gave the Portland Sea Dogs a 4-1 victory Friday night over the Richmond Flying Squirrels at Hadlock Field.
Hazelbaker had good timing; rain and lighting arrived in the next inning, halting the game and giving Portland an abbreviated win.
Hazelbaker was also getting his timing down after seeing fastballs and change-ups from reliever Jake Dunning (1-1).
"He threw me a change-up inside and I pulled that," Hazelbaker said of the fourth pitch. "Then he threw another change-up and I put a pretty good swing on it."
Oscar Tejeda had previously put the Sea Dogs on the board with a solo home run to left-center in the second inning.
Reliever Aaron Kurcz (2-2) got the victory with two shutout innings of one-hit ball.
Sea Dogs starter Anthony Ranaudo lasted five innings, allowing one run on seven hits and three walks, striking out four.
His fastball ranged from 90 to 93 mph with better control of his curve and change-up.
"It's starting to come together," Ranaudo said.
Ranaudo (5.84 ERA) gave up at least one hit in each inning but didn't get in trouble until he began issuing walks. Richmond loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth on a single and two walks before Ranaudo got a groundout.
In the fifth, Ranaudo began with a walk of Daniel Mayora, who stole second. Mayora went to third on a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Juan Ciriaco, the brother of Pawtucket infielder Pedro Ciriaco. That tied the game 1-1.

SALEM

Game Story

J.P. Ramirez hit a two-run double to key a three-run fourth inning as the Potomac Nationals beat the Salem Red Sox 4-2 in the second game to secure a doubleheader sweep on Friday at Pfitzner Stadium.
The P-Nats won the first game 5-4.
The Sox fell2 1/2 games behind Winston-Salem in the Southern Division first-half race.
Salem shortstop Xander Bogaerts hit a solo homer in the second game, his seventh of the season.
Michael Taylor had an RBI-double for the P-Nats.
Former Salem Avalanche pitcher Jimmy Barthmaier picked up the save for Potomac.
Barthmaier was a Houston Astros prospect in 2006 when he played for Salem.
He reached the major leagues with Pittsburgh in 2008. He is on the mend from Tommy John surgery.
In the first game, Justin Bloxom hit a three-run homer off Salem starter Keith Couch, capping a four-run second inning for the P-Nats.
Couch pitched a complete game for the Sox, the first of the season for a Salem pitcher.

Pennant Fever

Pennant fever has gripped the Salem Red Sox clubhouse.
Sort of.
As the days tick down on the first half of the Carolina League season - the title will be decided a week from Sunday - the Red Sox and Winston-Salem are engaged in a close battle at the top of Southern Division.
"You can't help but notice it," Sox manager Billy McMillon said. "I think guys are feeling it. But one of the things I try not to do is let it affect the way we go about our workload before the games or how the games are managed."
In other words, if a rusty reliever is scheduled to get some work or a backup position player needs some at-bats to stay fresh, they'll be used, even if it decreases the chances of winning a game. Development comes first for all involved.
"They keep score, so you'd like to win, and you'd like to make the playoffs and stuff like that," McMillon said. "But all that is a backdrop to getting guys to the next level, getting them in a position to be successful throughout their careers."
Salem, which hasn't won a first half title since 1988, rarely has been better equipped to get it done. There's top-end talent on the mound and at the plate.
The Sox have a first round draft pick and the minor league WHIP leader atop their rotation (Matt Barnes), a second round pick as the No. 2 starter (Brandon Workman) and the league's saves king (Mike Olmsted) dominating the late innings. The top two hitters in the league both play for Salem in Jackie Bradley Jr. and Travis Shaw.

DRIVE

Game Story

Henry Owens struck out nine batters and scattered five hits over five innings to help the Greenville Drive to an 11-6 victory over the Hickory Crawdads Friday night in a South Atlantic League game in Hickory, N.C.
Owens, a left-hander who was a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox in 2011, improved to 6-2 and got plenty of help from his teammates, who rapped out 16 hits off a quartet of Hickory pitchers.
Lucas LeBlanc and Drew Turocy combined for half of Greenville’s hits. LeBlanc went 4-for-5, scored three runs and had five RBIs, including a grand slam – his second homer of the season – in the seventh inning. Turocy also went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Jose Garcia, Keury De La Cruz and Boss Moanaroa each added two hits for the Drive, who scored in each of the first three innings but were clinging to a 4-3 lead heading into the sixth inning. Greenville then scored twice in the sixth, four times in the seventh and once in the eighth to put the game away.

Prior has at least been good enough in these first few outings to be worth checking in on. He's made of glass, but it would be kind of fun to have him become an effective MLB reliever later on in the year.

He's at least moved the odds of that happening from in the hundreds to 1 to about 50:1 against. Cool thing.
