14 year old makes the field in the U.S. Open. Youngest player ever in the tournament.

I'm looking forward to watching this year. I played this course a bunch back in the 80s. Never broke 100 on it though. :(

Woods, Westwood, Mahan, Watney, Howell, Byrd.

Holy fuck, I am pumped for this thing. I have a transcon flight tomorrow afternoon with DirecTV. Giddyup.

Word has it that the rough is spottily manageable, while still scaled back from prior years when it was too exponentially graduated - this the way the USGA should do it. Bring good or bad fortune into play while still giving a premium to whose who hit it where you should.

Edit: ESPN just ran through the first six holes...three par 4s over 489 yards, including a 520-yarder, and a 247-yard par 3. I would much rather go off the back (9th hole, interestingly, due to the routing) on Thursday.

This is going to be a brutal tournament for those who don't put the ball in the fairways, and even then it will be very tough. The first 6 holes are going to a true test for everyone. They asked Tiger yesterday what would be a good score through those first six and he said if you can get through at par you will pick up a ton of strokes on the field. Should be fun!

Working from home today so I can soak it all in.

Oh it's going to be ugly at times. I love the Masters because you can make charges on Sunday and get right back into it. However, I think the US Open is so much fun because it's almost survival of the fittest out there!

Love the West Coast golf. Allows me to catch most of the afternoon groups.

Anyway a few picks...Tiger, Rickie Fowler, McDowell and a wild card pick of David Toms.

Under par might win the whole thing. There is a 650 yard par 5 hole? That is comical.

Off the top of my head, Baltusrol had a 630-yarder, and I think Daly got home.

The pros were complaining because even Bubba can't get home in two, as if that's some sort of entitlement, which makes me laugh. For the most part, they'll still be hitting short irons to the green. And if the length punishes them for hitting it into the rough, well, too freaking bad. It's the US Open - deal with it.

Anyway, with that little rant over, the USGA is always aiming to make even par the winning score, but it's almost totally dependent on the severity of the rough. I do think right around par is a good bet to win.

650 yard par 5's are not bad at all, it's the 500 yard par 4's into the wind that are comical. Take a look at the first 6 holes and the 650 yard par 5 is the least of their worries.

Even par won in 1998, and it followed the traditional pattern. Leader at four under on Thursday, three under on Friday and Saturday, lots of over par rounds on Sunday.

Just once, I'd like to play a course thats set up like this so I can see if I could break 100.

I remember a few years ago when the Open was at Bethpage people were saying your average 6 handicap would have trouble doing it...I wonder what would happen on this course.

Remember this?

Actor Mark Wahlberg was the only player among the four in the U.S. Open Challenge to break the century mark at Pebble Beach Golf Links. On Wednesday, Wahlberg shot a 97 on the same set-up that will be used for next week's U.S. Open.

Hockey great Wayne Gretzky triple-bogeyed the final hole for a 100 and Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees shot a 102. Amateur Peggy Ference carded a 119 on the 7,040-yard course.

A PGA Tour member caddied for each player. Rickie Fowler looped for Wahlberg, Ricky Barnes carried for Gretzky, Bubba Watson caddied for Brees, and Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin was with Ference.

Ference, who plays to a 4.9 handicap at her club in Skillman, N.J., won an essay contest with 24,860 entries to earn a spot in the celebrity grouping. Her drives went only about 200 yards, and she failed to reach the red tees on some holes. She shot a 62 on the front nine and a 57 on the back. Her only par came on No. 12.

Hit the par 5 in two. Usage in a sentence: "I got home on 17 with Driver, 3-wood."

Productivity slipping...

Edit: way to geek the shorty. Phil might be closer to 80 than 72 given how hard it is after the turn.

Looks like they have some basic yardages painted on the intermediate cut (if Tiger in fact has a round number in).

Phil and Bubba wearing the same thing is getting awfully confusing for me since I'm only able to causally turn the feed on for a few minutes here and there via my phone.

Tiger looks absolutely in control of his swing right now, he just hit his 3 wood equal distance as Phil's driver. Bubba needs to start hitting some fairways to make it easier on himself.
