This is why we watch.
This is we stay up the late nights that make for tough mornings. This is why we drink that extra cup of coffee in the office the next day. This is why we plan our daytime hours around 48 minutes of nighttime play that is sandwiched between a myriad of commercials and promos for bad reality television. This is why we go home at lunch to walk the dog so we can head straight to the sports bar after work. This is why we continue to come back even though our sportsfan souls have been stomped on and crushed before.
We do it for the mere hope that the teams we follow will show the same fervor in the arena that we do for them everywhere else. When this happens, sports utopia arrives. It is the perfect storm for any ardent sports fan and almost always produces a postgame potporri of social media, messageboards and watching the same highlights over and over until you pass out in a state of bliss.
The 2011-2012 Boston Celtics do and provide just that. They care as much as we do.
Coming into this series, the Celtics were solid 6-1 underdogs. This was supposed to be LeBron's year. The Heat were supposed to "stiemroll" to the Finals on the way to their (not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7) 8+ NBA Titles. The loss of defensive stopper Avery Bradley combined with key injuries to Paul Pierce and Ray Allen was supposed to be too much for the Celtics to overcome; especially against a squad with two of the best players in the game.
Nobody told this Celtics team. Everyone picked against them, but they continued to do their thing. Their captain and most clutch player fouled out of two different games and they never quit. Their old bones could have packed it in and nobody would have even questioned it.
Instead, they found a way. They made sure that any Celtics fan watching wasn't wasting their time. They showed championship heart, championship guts, and championship soul. They showed Celtics Pride.
Welcome to the Jungle, Miami. Good job and good effort this year, but it is not enough.
Let's do this. Win today.
C's in 6.

Almost every Knicks fan I know is pulling for the Celtics. I've never seen NY fans rooting for a Boston team, and to have it be a virtual chorus is pretty amazing.
The Heat are just so easy to despise. I'm unable to make it up there tonight and am openly jealous of and, at the same time, very happy for, fans like Caspir who will be there for this. I was there for the beat down of the Lakers in Game 6 of 2008. While any win will do tonight, an ass whipping somewhere in the zone of Lakers Game 6 is so deserved...and would be so much fun.
Great opening post, Skrub.
PS: Another article making generally the same point as the Herald article linked above.

Game 5 sucked me in. That was exciting as anything I've watched (short of the Stanley Cup Finals and Superbowl) sports related in a while.
The Heat are a perfect villan, the Celtics are the perfect hero.
I'm in.

The power of Skrub is a curious thing
make a one team weep, make another team sing
Change a Heat to a little white dove
more than a feeling, that's the power of Skrub
Tougher than Haslem, rich like cream
Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream
make a bad one good make a wrong one right
power of Skrub that keeps you home at night
You don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need LBJ to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
but it might just save your life
That's the power of Skrub
That's the power of Skrub
First time you feel it, it might make you sad
Next time you feel it it might make you mad
But you'll be glad baby when you've found
Skrub's the power makes the world go'round
And it don't take money, don't take fame
don't need a velociraptor with a herniated stomach to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden it can be cruel sometimes
but it might just save your life
They say that all the refs are fair
yeah, but you don't care
But you know what to do
when it gets hold of you
and with a little help from above
you feel the power of Skrub
you feel the power of Skrub
Can you feel it ?
Hmmm
It don't take money and it don't take fame
don't need no D-Wade to ride this train
Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
you won't feel nothin' till you feel
you feel the power, just FEEL the power of Skrub
That's the power, that's the power of Skub
You feel the power of Skrub
you feel the power of Skrub
feel the power of Skrubbbb
I believe in the Power of Skrub.
Lead us to the finals, buddy.

I'm going to send $20 to the first NBA "expert" out there that mentions Bosh couldn't guard Corky with a sprained ankle, how is he going to hang with KG in the jungle?

This is true, its like a bizarro world. Life-long Celtic haters are giving props to the Celts, as rootable U-dogs to the phony Mfers.,

“There’s a lot of heart in this team, let me just tell you,” Menino told reporters, before adding, “KJ is great but Hondo is really the inspiration. Hondo drives that team.”
Just WIN.

Our officials: Dan Crawford, Tony Brothers, Tom Washington. Alternate: James Capers.
http://www.covers.co...referees_2.html
Recent history:
Dan Crawford: Boston is 1-5 this year, including 4 in a row. Miami is 6-2. One of the losses was in game 3 vs Indiana. Was in game 1 of this series.
Washington: Boston is 1-4 this year, including 3 in a row. Miami is 4-1. You might remember him from game 2 of this series.
Brothers: Boston is 3-2 this year, the last 3 games were Boston wins. Miami is 2-1. The loss was in game 3 vs Indiana.
If they needed any additional motivation they have it. Reminds me of Game 6 in 2008 vs Detroit when they overcame Bennett Salvatore to win going away.

This is awesome--without delving into the schedule too much, the Celtics won about 59% of their games this year. However with these 3 refs they won less than 33%.
I imagine some of that is wrapped in the fact that the NBA assumes these are good refs and possibly they were reffing in games where the Celts were playing other good teams, but still...

Besides the cheesy synthesizer music, that would make an awesome NBA commercial. Except the NBA would never allow poor Lebron to be shown in such a light.
