Posted 06 June 2012 - 06:29 PM
Voting:
Please vote for 5 to 10 players. The top 5 vote-receivers are accepted.
After all the positions are in, the top vote-getters not previously selected will be accepted, with no more than 10 per position, until 57 players are selected.
Once a player is selected for one position, he cannot be selected for another position.
More info on the methodology here
Baseball Reference positional history here
Mondday 5pm ET.
Thirteen players were nominated, under the poll choice limit of 20, so all players nominated are in the poll.

BTW, two-time All-Star Scott Cooper should run away with this voting.

Frank Malzone should be getting more votes, people. 3 time gold glove winner, 6 time all star. One of the few bright spots between the end of the Williams era and 1967.
Ever meet him?

No, but I used his last name as a login on another board. LOL. I did see him play at Fenway. Forgot but looking him up on BREF, he retired after the 1966 season, therefore missing out on the Impossible Dream season. You?Ever meet him?

Yeah.
That's why I didn't vote for him.
Not sure why they use him for Autograph Alley and other events. He's not a happy old man.

It's not a popularity contest...we all know that Yaz was probably the dourest guy ever to don the Sox uniform, yet he makes the team.
Ever meet him?
Yeah, I know his reputation. I also know he was very nice when I met him as a kid and then again in a business setting.
Malzone, on the other hand, notsomuch.
And the whole thing is a popularity contest.

He wasn't a happy young man either. Specifically recall what a crab he was at autograph day in '64. Of course, playing on that team may have played a part. So was Mr. Red Sox, J Pesky. Maybe my grandfather should not have started things off by saying "Hey Pesky ..."

Malz looks like he's trying to be a good guy in this pic (thanks amh). Pesky looks a little suspicious though. Malzone has to be top 5 Red Sox 3Bman.

Malzone tied for fifth at third base and Rico not being on the shortstop list, wow. Rico played more games at short than at third and during his most athletic years. Malzone played in six all star games, nobody more at third except Boggs. At least the outfield should be a lot more straightforward.
Yes and yes. Some criteria as to playing time should have been made...otherwise, Adrien Beltre is the greatest living Red Sox third baseman and Rickey Henderson is one of the Red Sox' greatest outfielders. And no way Malzone should lose a spot to either Lansford or Mueller here. I know it's tough to vote for someone who you've never seen play, and I bet that's the case here, but there is something to be said about being well-acquainted with Red Sox history even though you didn't actually see it yourself. Six All-Star Games, three Gold Gloves, runner-up in ROY voting to Tony Kubek. A real steady-Eddie type of player.
Rico was a shortstop who moved to third later in his career when he started slowing down. I saw his entire career and I always think of him as a shortstop, first and foremost.

Yeah, I don't know how you can think of third base for the Sox and not think of Malzone. The guy was a cornerstone of the team for a LOT of years, both good and bad. Lansford only played for 2 years. If you're going to go that route, then Beltre is your man.
Don't blame me, I voted for Beltre.
I also didn't vote for Malzone, but that's because he's nothing more than a stat line to this relatively young fan, and those stats were not particularly impressive. I certainly don't think of him when I think of Third Base, I think of Boggs, Lowell, and Mueller, because they played and produced while I was alive. A "steady eddie" arguably doesn't stack up with Wade Boggs, or even Mike Lowell and Bill Mueller in terms of productivity while with the Sox. I went "best living 3B" over "mostly with Red Sox" in voting for Beltre and Lansford, but anyone emphasizing "mostly with the Red Sox" should obviously have included Malzone in their top 5.
EDIT - "Clearly" becomes "arguably" when factoring in how short the periods of productivity were for Lowell and Mueller.
