He should be in (#803), but what purpose does this online petition serve? Is Jeff Idelson going to read it? If he is, why would 1000 Red Sox fans from the internet have more weight than Bill James?

Sorry for being cynical. But I'd think you can find 1000 people on the internet to support almost any cause.

Also it's amusing that 825 people "Like" the petition on Facebook but only 803 have signed it.

I signed it, but I'm sure many if us feel the same way. Really, a thousand unconfirmed e-signatures probably isn't going to sway anyone (think of that number in the context of the average attendance for a single game.... 29,000) but it's something.

I've heard stories about Dwight that give me some trepidation. CoRP - anything that you could say to sway people on the fence?

I doubt you could have heard anything about Dwight other than he is a complete gentleman. He ardently supports a number of charities. He is a god-fearing, churchgoing man with a truly wonderful and awesome (and hilarious) wife...who I think I like even more than him. And his numbers speak for themselves. He is richly deserving of this honor and his number 24 is long overdue for it's rightful place next to the other greats on the right field roof deck.

edit: does anyone here have a Twitter account with a lot of followers? This needs tweeting. I wanted to get to 1,000 in a day. I'd like to get to 10,000 by the end of the month.

#824 here. Evans is my all time fave. Class act all the way around from everything I've read and heard. Hell of a baseball player and in my opinion often overlooked for his offensive and defensive dominance in the 80's . 5 of his 8 Gold gloves (5 consecutive from '81-'85) came during the decade and no AL player hit more home runs in the '80s than Dewy. Are the numbers there to get him in? I'm not sure, but then agian we can make arguments for others who aren't in and against some who are.

Dwight could be in the discussion for best player not in. Should he make it, he would not be in the discussion for worst player enshrined. I kinda doubt this petition has any impact one way or the other, but I signed anyway because I'd like to see him get in - or at least get a closer look than he got on the ballot. I find the one-and-done treatment on the ballot for Dewey and Lou Whitaker to be among the most puzzling BBWAA votes in a long line of puzzling votes - those guys deserved a closer look than 95% of the writers gave 'em.

Your are correct, the petition itself is not going to get Dwight on the ballot, his stats and the support of the Red Sox organization will. That said, it does NOT hurt to have the opinion of public support.

So think of it this way. The committee is presented with Dwight's stats ALONG with 10k sigs (which is the goal, hefty I know). If you're a committee member with a vote, are you NOT going to take into consideration 10k (or whatever number) fans from across the globe want to see this player inducted? It's human nature to be influenced by public opinion.

And trust me, this petition is going to get on Idelson's desk. Bottom line, the more awareness that's brought to this, the better the chances are he makes it through the screening process. Can't get elected unless you make it through the screening process.

Who doesn't love a grassroots campaign? Tough to get 10k people I know, but we're going to try. There's 16 months to go!

Evans is not even a borderline HoFer. In terms of career value, he's an average Hall of Famer.

As long as Kate's on board, perhaps Dewy should dress up like Randy Johnson.

I was at that game in which Dwight Evans hit his 148th homer off Sid Monge. Unfortunately, they lost it in extras. I think Bo Diaz got a big hit off the Sox's crappy relievers. But the chants of "Dewey! Dewey!" that rocked Fenway after the homer and as Evans went out to right field at the start of the next inning were amazing.

From 1980 on, I always wanted Evans up more than Rice.

Oh, and #1231
