With Britton going to Portland today, no corresponding move yet for Salem (they already sent Matt Marquis to Greenville after activating Brandon Jacobs from the DL yesterday).

I'm assuming they're going to promote a starter to the Salem rotation. Miguel Pena perhaps? 10 G, 9 GS, 2.06 ERA, 57/8 K:BB, .232 BAA, 1.013 WHIP, 3 HR in 52.1 IP. His next start would be June 5.

So, given the past two seasons of evidence, what season-ending and potentially career-threatening malady does everyone think is causing "lower back stiffness" for Iglesias?

One of the new pitchers, RHP Wildyn Florian, signed yesterday.

Not much else out there on him, but here's his Facebook page. Not sure if he actually attended BC or if he started "liking" anything and everything with "Boston" in the title.

Swihart hit a home run, good to see. Though he still struck out 3 times. Still has a lot of work to do, obviously.

JBJ with another stellar game, 2-3 with 2 doubles, two RBI, and a walk. It's clear he should be in Portland right now.

Shaw belongs in Portland too. His OPS is creeping up on 1.000.

Edit: Boss hit his 5th. 1/2 3bb 3r 3rbi. His ISO is slowly climbing.

Boss has a 15 game hitting streak. During that stretch:

72 PA 22/51 7 2b 2 HR 17bb 10k .431/.542/.686

YTD .298/.438/.457 5HR 39BB/43k with his BB% and K% rising and dropping respectively as the season wears on. Amazed a guy can hit in 15 straight and still stay basically under the radar. Granted he does have some warts.

2011 12.8% bb% 31.3% k%.
2012 20.1% bb% 22.7% k%

I love, love, love him based on just watching the stats float around, but has anyone here seen him play? Any thoughts on whether he might really become a prospect?

I haven't, but various Sox Prospects writers have.

Well filled-out first baseman signed out of Australia. Demonstrates strong power in batting practice. Utilizes a slight upper-cut swing from the left side of the plate. Tends to produce too much topspin and loop under the ball. Average batspeed. Hit tool is presently below-average. Struggles with secondary offerings and driving the ball to the opposite field. Below-average approach, but inexperienced playing baseball. Solid-average-to-better power potential. Must improve with getting the sweet spot of the bat on more offerings consistently. Shows improving footwork around the bag, but range is limited and tends to look too stiff at times. Average arm. Fringy overall tools.

The gist I get is similar to so many players I see in the Cape League: Creams fastballs and mistake pitches, gets fooled by breaking stuff. And we all know how unrefined off-speed pitches are in the low minors. Lofty stat lines at these levels may indicate they're ready for better competition, but rarely suggest any projection as major leaguers.

STORIES

SALEM

http://www.roanoke.c...eball/wb/309668

OUTBURST: The Salem Red Sox exploded for 15 hits and pounded the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 12-4 on Friday night in front of 2,323 at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
NOW'S THE TIME: With two of the Carolina League's top pitchers scheduled to work for Myrtle Beach tonight, the Sox knocked around four hurlers Friday. That includes starter Wilmer Font, who is on the 40-man roster of the Texas Rangers.
HE SAID IT: "They say it's contagious, and it showed tonight," said Sox right fielder Matty Johnson, one of seven Salem players with multiple hits. "People hitting and doing things that they need to do makes you want to do the things you need to do and take care of your business, too. We're all pulling on the same chain."
GETTING A CHANCE: Johnson, signed out the independent Frontier League in 2010, has been a lineup fixture lately following the promotion of Shannon Wilkerson to Double-A. He went 2 for 5 with an RBI single, reached base three times, scored twice and stole a base.
"I always had my mind ready, came ready to play every day, and fortunately I got my opportunity," said Johnson, who raised his average to .261. "Hopefully it'll continue."
WELCOME ARM: Right-hander Michael Gleason made his season debut for Salem, striking out four over three scoreless innings of relief. Up from extended spring training, he earned a save for starter Michael Celestino.
FEELING BETTER: Brandon Jacobs, playing his second game since coming off the DL, went 2 for 5 and hit his second homer in the third inning.

Drake Britton

Friday's announcement that pitcher Drake Britton had been promoted to Double-A was as much a triumph for his coach as it was for the athlete himself.
True, it was Britton who put together the strong May (2-2, 2.10 ERA over five starts) that got the attention of Boston decision-makers. But it was Salem pitching coach Kevin Walker who helped him get there, ushering the lefty through mental struggles last year and a tough start to this season.
"I don't really trust a whole lot of people with the well-being of my career," Britton said after a strong start this season. "He's been there for me through good times and bad. That's why I know that he's actually here with me."
Britton and Walker have worked together since they met at low-A Greenville in 2009. When Britton struggled through a dreadful 1-13 campaign in Salem last year, Walker helped him get past it.
"We've built a relationship," Walker said earlier this season. "There's a lot of give and take. This guy's somebody that I know in and out really well, so there's buttons I can push and there's times when I know I need to step back.
"And we build those relationships for the purpose of helping him out on the mound."
It worked. Britton allowed only 10 earned runs over his final seven appearances at Salem starting April 25. That included a six-inning gem against Lynchburg on Wednesday in which he struck out seven, walked none and gave up only five hits.
"Mentally, he's been a strong guy this year," Walker said. "He didn't get off to the start he wanted to, but I keep telling this guy that you're only defined by what you do today and what you do tomorrow."

DRIVE

Game Story

One night after getting thumped by Charleston, Greenville returned the favor and whipped the RiverDogs 13-3 before 5,126 at Fluor Field Friday night.
Greenville (28-26) sprinkled six doubles and two home runs among its 13 hits and benefited from eight walks.
“I think the guys came ready to play tonight,” Greenville manager Carlos Febles said. “We got good pitching, and the offense was pretty good.”
The Drive began their rebound early. Bryan Johns led off the first with a double. After one out, Charleston starter Bryan Mitchell walked four batters in a row, resulting in two runs. Jordan Weems singled in a run and Jose Vinicio brought in two more with a single.
Garin Cecchini was one of those who walked and scored in the first. He doubled in the second, stole third, and beat the throw home on an infield grounder to give Greenville a 6-0 lead after two.
Charleston (33-21) cut that lead in half with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Vinicio and Johns, however, helped Greenville answer with four runs in the bottom of that inning. They hit back-to-back, two-run doubles to give the Drive a 10-3 lead.
Blake Swihart, who struck out his first three at bats, added to the lead with a solo homer to right in the sixth.
Greenville continued to show its power game in the seventh. Johns led off with his third double of the night and later scored on Cecchini’s ground out. Moanaroa then hit a solo home run to right. That extended his hitting streak to 15 games, tying him for the second-longest streak in the South Atlantic League this season.
