I think those stats mostly come from Beckett's 1st start, where he couldn't do anything and Fielder and Cabrera feasted on that.

What do you mean you don't like Pods in the lead off spot? He has a .467 OBP 1 WAR in only 15 ABs which is .067 wins per AB which ranks first in the AL this year and would be third all time if he continued at this rate. Based on some simple algorithms and other shit I think there is a 37% chance he will out perform 2011 Jacoby Ellsbury.

Offensively, A. wins because Punto's out for anyone playing RF.
Defensively? Only drawback to B is Gonzo in RF. Drawbacks to A are Youk, WMB and Aviles out of best position (though not huge minuses), and one + with Gonzo at first.

I'd say stick with B, not least of all because we're gonna want to get Gonzo practice in RF anyway for interleague and a theoretical WS so Papi can play.

Well tonight they are going with:

C) Youk at 3B, Aviles at SS, Punto at 2B, and Gonzalez at 1B, Sweeny in RF.

That's a pretty big offensive downgrade, basically exchanging Punto for WMB, but probably the best defensive arrangement. I for one am happy to see they are at least giving WMB him some practice at SS and exploring all options.

I'd imagine Middlebrooks getting reps at short has more to do with not having enough infielders on the roster right now and not wanting to put Pedroia or an outfielder in the infield after an injury/ejection.

Why do people immediately assume increased injury risk when a player moves to a new position? It seems especially hasty with a young athletic player like Middlebrooks. I'd hazard a guess that Gonzalez in right is far more likely to get hurt than Middlebrooks at short based on age and athleticism alone. Nevermind that Middlebrooks has played SS more recently than Gonzalez is likely to have put any significant time in at right field.

If Middlebrooks can play passable defense at short, I'd rather see Youk, Middlebrooks, Aviles, Gonzalez than Youk, Aviles, Punto, Gonzalez or even Middlebrooks, Aviles, Punto, Youk with Gonzalez in right. In both of the latter options, Punto is displacing a much better hitter.
