Per Rosenthal twitter:

Source: #RedSox acquire Podsednik from #Phillies. Not clear whether he's heading to Boston or Pawtucket.

Podsednik acquisition by #RedSox increases their depth. He retains right to opt out on June 1 if he is not in majors by that date.

What could he possibly provide that Lin can't?

Per Speier, cash considerations.

Also:

It was #redsox need for LHH OF that prompted trade for Podsednik and call-up of Nava. Nava is diving around like Superman tonight on bases.

So they need three lefty OFs? That's going to fix all of the problems? Not that it's a big deal but I don't understand the move.

I'm looking at it as Cherington replacing Lin or Nava... in AAA.

And here I was thinking that was going to be Linares...you know, the 27 yo in Portland with the .983 OPS who also put up better numbers in AAA last year than the 36 yo Podsednik has there the last two years.

It is amazing what they are doing to keep Linares out of Triple-A. This is unbelievable.

I saw Podsednik play Tuesday night in Indianapolis. Wasn't sure it was the same ex-MLer Scott Podsednik. He looked like he had absolutely nothing left. We were shocked. That .203 in AAA must be BABIP-inflated. Goodness gracious. Cash considerations? The Phillies must've paid us to take him.

Can't wait to have Cafardo start beating the drum on this one: you can't risk losing Podsednik.

Fun fact: in 2009, Podsednik led the majors in groundouts to the pitcher with 30.

Shit, Podsednik was once was involved in a trade for Bobby Witt. Now there's a blast from the past.

Why why why? These are the moves I am supposed to think are sensible? I would have hated this move when some people thought he was good. he wasn't and he isn't.
This season is disappearing in smoke why not try lin or other options vs paying someone everyone knows is shit. What a waste of money. Best case. Worst case he blocks better younger cheaper players and is a waste of money.
Insert raging rant of swears here.

And been in AAA ever since. Uggh. Any idea what the single season record for GO to the pitcher is and who has it?

I'd also like to see what JCL could do. It's not like they'd be taking a big risk.

I'm convinced this team is going to slow the advancement of prospects to the majors and retard their accumulation of service time wherever possible to keep their arbitration and free agency clocks from winding toward accelerated eligibility.

God I hope not. But why would they do that? How often do you get chances to try these guys out when you are the sox?
If they work out then who cares if they cost more they will be cheaper than most alternatives, if not who cares about their clocks.
Lin isn't likely to be a career starter but he could be a 4th of with great d. You don't worry about that clock, if he gets a shot and kills it great. Either way I'll take a lot of internal options vs pods.

Except for 2010 when he was .297/.342/.382 with 35 SB in 595 MLB PA.

I don't necessarily see why Linares isn't getting a chance in AAA, given the trajectory of his numbers. He's not the typical 27 year old 'career' minor leaguer.

But while a speed guy like Pods can presumably see his skill deteriorate quickly between age 34 and 36, I think he's worth a flyer to see if he has anything left, especially given some of the guys we've trotted through the OF this season. While Byrd's OBP with the Sox is 150 points higher than it was with the Cubs, it's still just .299 (and .237 on the season). Which is still 20 points better than McDonald's.

I'm not sure this is a season long block of JCL at AAA as much as it is seeing if Pods has anything left and whether he could take a spot on the active roster should some of our current OFs continue to struggle. Granted, JCL got a late start, but I don't think the club is all that concerned with pushing his FA eligibility back even further into his mid-thirties.
