DavidWaldstein: Mariano Rivera appears to have been injured in outfield during BP. He is being taken off the field on a cart. Looks bad.

Whitney Holtzman@WHoltzman
Mariano Rivera is writhing in pain, holding his knee after it looks like he injured it chasing fly balls in BP.

Whitney Holtzman@WHoltzman
Medical staff carried Mariano and placed him on a cart. He's being driven off the field. Looks like he's in so much pain. Hope he's okay.

Just watched footage of Mariano Rivera injury aftermath on MLB Network. It did not look good, but waiting for more info.

Why was Mariano River chasing BP fly balls?

I'd be much happier about this if it was Arod or Jeter.

Let's hope his knee is OK. If it's not he might fall from the ceiling of the cave into a pile of guano.

@Buster_ESPN: "Rivera loves to chase down fly balls during batting practice; uses it for his running, and has for many years."

I've done something similar. It was followed by ACL surgery and 10 months of rehab. That would be a terrible way to go out.

One witness to Rivera's accident said it looked like "the Derrick Rose play," when the Bulls star tore his ACL last week. More as we have it

A plague has sent down across the AL East. It's said to have originated in Boston. Healthiest team wins the division.

I think it's a plot hatched by the Orioles to finally equalize the talent in the division...

Scary scene here in KC with Mariano Rivera writhing on the ground after wrenching R knee jumping for BP fly ball. Hope for best. Fear worst.

As a pure Yankee hater, gotta say I've got a lot of respect for Mariano and hope he doesn't go out on something as silly as this. That said, if he's down for a spell don't they just plug in Robertson and (theoretically) not miss a beat so far as the 9th goes? He's pretty lights out, so now you just plug in Soriano for the 8th and Robertson for the 9th, right?

Just saw the clip on YES. Wow, it did look similar to Rose's injury. I'd be surprised if it isn't a torn ligament.

Sure, but it's never good to have to slide everyone up and shorten the pen, especially with a less than stellar rotation.

They'll take a hit either way. Robertson to close means they lose their godly relief ace. So you gotta think they'll give the nod to Soriano based on experience and keeping Robertson in his current role.

Just picked up Soriano in my fantasy league (Robertson was already gone). I actually wouldn't be surprised to see them go to Soriano as the closer since he has the experience over Robertson, and leave Robertson in the area he excels at.

I learned in the Terrell Suggs thread that I shouldn't take any pleasure in this.

Seriously, though, Suggs is a douche, but Rivera is one of the most stomachable Yankees ever. Reserved joy. That's how I'll leave it.

If this means retirement, it's too bad. I was really hoping to see him suck for a final year. Even a couple months. Just to see what it looked like.

Kansas City media reporting it was his right knee -- MRI later tonight at KU. Kind of surprised he's not on the next plane to New York.
