I've heard several times that Ethier and Pedey are best friends and that he would love to have him here. Anyone think it's an actual possibility this offseason if he gets to FA?

Signing corner outfielders to long term deals hasn't really worked out for us recently.

I hope not.

I doubt they can afford him. Kalish is supposed to be the RF of the future, so the answer is no. Besides, the new owners can not let him go I don't think.

I wouldn't rule anything out, but his contract would have to be super affordable for the Red Sox to be able to sign him. Plus he's getting older and his defense probably isn't good enough for the RF in Fenway. Unless Carl Crawford magically disappears or retires, I don't see it.

I would think if it's a reasonable contract he would be able to succeed, unlike the other people who have come to play in Boston he has...

1) Played in a big market
2) Has his best friend currently playing for the Red Sox.

If the Sox can get him at a reasonable price I really don't see why not especially if they move Youk and hammer out something with Papi.

  • I think he will be looking for a big payday especially if he has a big season this year, which suggests the Sox will not sign him. Also the Sox could probably put the money to better use other places.

Unless Kalish's injury troubles linger, I think a combination of him and Ryan Sweeney should be effective enough that they won't need to commit a lot of money to a good, not great RF.

Between already having some decent options for RF and the likely need for help in other areas, if Boston decides to spend a lot for a high profile FA I don't think Ethier would be that guy. If he wants to sign here for a lot less money than other places because of Pedroia then maybe it is worth a look, but it is wishful thinking to hope he will take several million a year less just to be on the same team as a buddy of his.

Ethier is a nice player, Dustin "Pesky" Pedroia certainly likes him as a player and friend

Seems like he would be too expensive, and with long term Contract with Carl Crawford, Carl's issue regarding what he'll produce when Carl returns to the lineup and more imminent issue everday about re-signing or letting Jacoby test FA, in which case in part cause of Scott Boras, Esq. being Jacoby's Agent, Ethier would seem unlikely to become a Red Sox player

Never know, about the only contstant in MLB are the surprises so we'll see, although I would rather see Ellsbury re-signed, Ryan Kalish getting a real look once healthy and development of a RH power hitting outfielder playing RF or LF for the Red Sox

Respectfully submitted,

I believe alot depends on Kalish and how he returns from his injuries. From what I have read Either would be in the $15-$18 million per year range. I would think the Dodgers might try to make bigger splash and go after Josh Hamilton for a few million more. Like wise the Sox would rather spend that money on Jacoby.

They do have Sweeney cheap through 2013, so they're already got a non-terrible option, but Ryan Sweeney isn't a player that keeps you from making a more interesting move. He's a place-holder until Kalish/Bradley/Other is ready. Unfortunately, Sweeney/Kalish/Ellsbury/Crawford are all lefthanded, so job sharing between them might be tougher to work out. Somebody's likely to be moved from that group, and given his contract, it's not Crawford. Of course, Kalish might never fully recover form his injuries, so maybe that "problem" works itself out.

He's going to command too much money. I would much rather have Kalish in RF for cheap, saving money in hopes of keeping Ellsbury...which is looking less likely thanks to Crawford's mega deal.

So looks like we won't find out, as Either signs for what looks like 5 years/$85M. Way more than Ethier's 30's are worth - I can't imagine he earns that contract.

I don't think he's worth that contract. I really like Kalish as our RF option next season.
