You stole my line!

Awesome night. Is BB telling us he's going to be retiring soon?

The only bad thing about tonight is that we didn't add a #1 for next year. No doubt we trade one of the #2's now for more picks, right?

I'm not sure. His willingness to trade a third and a fourth to move up a couple of spots each suggests BB doesn't love the talent level of this year's draft.

Which is hilarious, given the fact he was talking about how awesome the depth was in this draft 20 minutes before it started on NFLN.

Yeah, he specifically said that he liked the talent in the 2nd & 3rd rounds of this draft.

Well he did trade out of the end of the 3rd and the 4th. It's possible he thought there was a big drop-off after the depth of picks 40-70.

He still has two picks where he thought there was sufficient depth.

At this point all bets are off... but I'll be truly surprised if the Pats don't trade back to get at least one more pick (especially given the number of quality DBs and WRs left, I'm hoping we can acquire at least one more pick). If they don't, I assume it will indicate a) the perceived weakness of the later rounds of this draft, and/or b) the strength of the particular players chosen, and/or c) a dearth of roster spots.

Remaining needs:
- DB (either a CB or an S, depending upon McCourty's position, although both positions could use additions)
- RB (possible that this will be filled through free agency?)
- OL (depth would be nice at both at T and G)
- TE (depending upon their attitude toward Daniel Fells)

The team has 2 picks left (trade value points in parens)

Round 2 - Pick 48 (420)
Round 2 - Pick 62 (284)

These picks still give the Patriots a lot of flexibility. For instance (note that these are simply examples based upon the trade value chart, not based upon actual teams):

Give:
- Round 2 - Pick 48 (420)
Get:
- Round 2 - Pick 55 (350)
- Round 4 - Pick 112 (70)

Or even:

Give:
- Round 2 - Pick 48 (420)
Get:
- Round 3 - Pick 66 (260)
- Round 3 - Pick 95 (120)
- Round 5 - Pick 132 (40)

The great thing is they didn't even cash out ... still have two 2nds.

They never even cashed out of the future... there's still a full round of draft picks waiting in 2013... just feels like we cashed out because we have lost our perpetual extra first going forward. That's it.

Sign Carter and go to war. Team is going to be loaded this year. Superbowl or bust like it is every year in foxboro. Dont think I will ever love a person that I dont know as much as Belichick. Is it training camp yet?

Agree on DB being the #1 need left by far. A safety or a CB would make a ton of sense. I'd also like a RB, but since we're past the point in the draft where you're looking at complete backs, they'd need to bring something to the table that Ridley and Vereen don't - maybe a big bruiser of some type. Some OL depth - especially at tackle where we're 1 injury away from making Cannon the starter at RT (not the worst thing in the world, just a lot thinner than I thought it would be with the Light retirement). They seem pretty well set at Guard with Mankins/Waters/Gallery assuming Mankins is all set to go by the opener.

I think a 3 year/2 million per deal with Fells means they're serious about him. And honestly, he's the 3rd TE as it is. If the Pats use another 2nd on a TE I'll roll my eyes, although I guess it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

The one position of need I think you're missing here is a DL big. Neither Jones nor HIghtower can play on the line in a 3-4, and what they have there is Wilfork/Deadrick/Love/Fanene, and I guess Pryor coming back from injury. I could see another body being added there. If Kendall Reyes is around when they pick I think it'd make a lot of sense to throw him into the mix there.

I agree. Though I think BB may feel that he could get a veteran big body for the DL like he's done the past few years. Really, I think the DB class is 2-3 rounds deep so I'd be surprised if we don't grab one. Then with the other pick, I expect take any of the best player available/trade down/trade out possibilities.

I have a feeling that we might see modest dropdowns via trade. If the draft comes to us at 48, for example, where BB has 3-4 guys he likes, I could see him trying to trade down 3-4 picks in order to pick up something on Day 3. By the old draft value chart (assuming that at this point in the draft, the values are probably still fairly current,) the #48-52 range is worth about 10 points per slot, so dropping 3 slots would be worth a pick in the latter part of the 5th round; 4 slots would be the early part of the 5th round.

Same strategy would hold at pick 63, but there you are in the 6 points per slot range. So dropping 3-4 picks would yield 18-24 points of value, which is early to late 6th round.

Without trades, a given draft class is 7 guys. Given that it seems that more UFAs make this team than guys drafted in Rounds 4-7, maybe BB is fine with focusing on 4 guys in the first two rounds and then filling out the "7 man class" with UFAs this year. Also to be considered is that with the current roster, there really is only room for high end talent rookies, so why waste your time drafting a guy in the late 3rd and 4th that may have difficulty making the team, when you can move up and get the guys you want?
