No Not That Chris Carpenter. He's significant compensation.

At least he has reverse splits so we can stop seeing Mac vs RHP. I also assume he'll be the primary center fielder.

Can he pitch?

I mean, seriously, there ain't a whole lot right now that Byrd or anyone else can do -- except maybe retrieve balls from the player's parking lot. There's playing deep, and then there's playing where you can actually catch them. And all of those people playing that deep paid money to get in.

I sure as hell hope we don't give up anything to get him.

He's better than Jason Repko, isn't he? .729 OPS since 2010, UZR and TZ seem to say he can play an average CF. Not owed a ton of money. His awful start and age indicates there's a chance he goes Mike Cameron on us, but depending on the cost this is a solid move.

Who did you guys expect Cherington to acquire, Matt Kemp?

Byrd not in the Cubs line up today:

"Joe Mather is playing center field and batting eighth for manager Dale Sveum on Saturday"

Well, considering his OBP this season is below .150, it sounds like he'll fit right in.

He's a mediocre player that shouldn't cost anything, especially considering the circumstances of this offseason regarding Theo Epstein.

He makes $6.5MM this year. Theo should be a bro and pick up 80% of that.

Good to know Larry wasn't lying when he said he was adding payroll, about $5.5M left this year.

If the Sox trade anyone more valuable than Jeremy Kehrt or Boss Moanaroa to get Byrd, I will go berserk.

I'm interested in how much of his salary the sox take on. As much as they need an OF, I'd hate to think they used what little flexibility they apparently have on Marlon Byrd.

Yea, he's weird. His splits flip almost every other year. But he should still take Mac's AB's vs RHP (career - .209/.276/.333)

Eh, whatever. Our pitchers don't talk to the hitters, anyway. Cause they're all sneaking dirty tattletales.

sahadevsharma: Sitting w/ @ESPNBruceLevine in press box, he says that Byrd deal will likely happen today, apparently for a LH reliever & minor leaguer

Miller?

Either Miller or Morales -- Wood just went to the DL for his shoulder, and the Cubs need a set-up man.

Hill and Doubront are better than both of them, anyway.

If it's for a LH reliever & minor leaguer, then it must be Justin Thomas AND Miller.

This. Byrd is worth 50% more than they're paying Jason Repko. That's it. Theo had better pick up most of Byrd's salary and get in return a very marginal non-prospect in return. We're doing them a favor getting Byrd off their roster and paying ANY of his salary. Byrd's gone when Elsbury gets back, if not when Crawford gets back in a few weeks. Worth almost nothing.

I cant hope that it's Justin Thomas?

Morales is someone I'd rather keep, he is turning into an interesting late inning arm.

Is Marlon Byrd really what the Sox need right now? is this an indication that Ellsbury is hurt worse than we understand?

Seems to me a better move would be to give Roy Oswalt a call and see if they can work something out.

That's a very good comparison, fan emotion-wise. Whoop-de-doo. Our pitching is killing us so we're going to trade for an old, expensive, washed-up outfielder who's better than Jason Repko and giving up...a pitcher. Definitely, to get back to our Titanic metaphor, just moving around the deckchairs.

HIs OPS+ right now thru 13 games is -36. So it's nice to see the front office is getting guys they know will fit in with the club.

The problem with this, of course, is that Roy Oswalt can't play the outfield.

Neither can Byrd amirite. /beat to the punch

Depends on how much freight Theo's picking up.

Byrd + $4MM for Morales and Portice wouldn't hurt too badly.

Well, besides making the worst pitching staff in baseball even worse for a marginal upgrade.

Marlon Byrd, in 43 atbats, is currently hitting .070 with NO walks, so his OBP is also .070. And, he's getting paid another $5.5 million this year. THIS is worth an Andrew Miller? Did Ben decide to go after the worst possible baseball player on a ML roster he could find outside of Jason Repko to replace Jason Repko? They'll be laughing their heads off in Chicago if we give up any player who could actually help the Cubs on the ML level. Just getting anyone to take this guy off their roster is a "steal" for Theo.

The <10 IP that 5.40 ERA Franklin Morales would throw before Hill comes back means this a basically a moot point. And Doubront could be replaced by Cook as early as Wednesday.

But I'll grant you the moral victory of being right. Personally, I'd still much rather see Lin's defense out there than flippin' Byrd.

I just think giving Oswalt some of the money that is going to be wasted on Byrd would fix more of the roster issues.
